That's a lot of work, with the rusty bolts and the weight of the bumper, trying to maneuver the replacement past the tow hitch, plus the heat. Nice job getting it all done, hopefully you're able to recuperate quickly and get the replacement put on in more favorable weather.

Nah man that's a brilliant feature. Nothing worse than bring in a tight awkward spot and have the ratchet pop off the socket. You never have to swap out sockets in that tight awkward spot, once you're in that tight awkward spot, turning threads is the job. Swapping sockets is done out in the open where pressing the button ain't no thing.

I can tell you from experience that it doesn't always turn out that way in the real world. But appreciate your point of view. I work on some pretty rusty s#it, so you're probably right in most cases.

Hi Jorg, thank you for making this detailed video. I am following your advice as I search for a bike right now. Would you recommend I buy one of the 1980s mountain bikes you mention even if it has stamped dropouts (it's a "cheap, department store one")? I've only been able to find that kind so far...However, I may not be correct in my classification of the bike. Do you think you could double check for me (I can send some pictures)? That would be so great. Thank you so much!
@the1andonly4 күн бұрын
Hi Anita and thanks for your comment. I think a lower end bike with stamped dropouts can work. I also have a bike like that that I now use in the winter. The derailleur adds thickness to the drive side dropout and I added a cut off derailleur to the other side to help support the wheel. I've never loaded this bike much, but think it would be okay. Forged dropouts are better though because you are carrying a load. Also pay attention to how many eyelets for racks and fenders the frame has. Good components are also a real bonus when it comes to a touring bike. My shifters are all metal friction thumb type and will probably last forever. Yes, you can send me a picture. My email is: [email protected]

Do you have anybody local who can apply a framesaver or something similar? While you have access some kind of a weather proofing or primer might be nice to spray on your parts.

I'm using a lanolin based corrosion protection called "Fluid Film". It creeps into the rust and stays there a long time. You can apply it with minimal prep work. 🙂

If you are burning wood and need a light system, this really is a sweet piece of kit. Great find! While you have to be mindful of fire safety and acceptable use locations, if you're in the wild you can usually find plenty of free fuel. Every once in a while I see fold up kits like this at garage sales, so keep your eyes peeled every time you check yard sales and thrift stores because many people make plans to have adventures but end up not even using these great items and they show up super discounted, sometimes new in box! Some people carry fold-up metal fences that act as heat reflectors and wind shields. I wonder if 0Stella's had to get creative with wind conditions in order to cook. I like the double chamber gasifier type wood burners. I believe Silver Fire makes a nice one called the Survivor, but it's a 12lb beast that is not fit for typical touring. Of course they make a 12 ounce Scout version, which might be practical as they break down to a size that can fit in the sort of pot you would use to cook with. I wouldn't mind carrying a 4 or 5lb version if they were able to retain some of the nicer gasifier and rocket flame features of the Survivor in a smaller form factor. Currently I'm on the ultralight burner path with a Fire Maple Blade 2 titanium burner (4.7oz) paired to a 1lb Propane tank. I consider this a reasonable compromise of weight and convenience plus I have a reusable well-made propane tank rather than those one-use landfill types. These are highly efficient and work in cold temps. By the numbers, you would be able to cook oatmeal 12 or 13 times on a 1lb tank by starting with a full burn boil then simmering to completion. If you're smart about it you could probably cook 2 meals every day, and more elaborate meals would be possible if you refuel sooner than 7 days. You wouldn't necessarily even need to get to a propane filling station since the filling adapter can be used to top off from a 20lb tank that someone might be willing to offer at a campground or random encounter.

What it took for me to start to even bother carrying a life jacket in the canoe was when, in 1976 which was a year after my Mackenzie River adventure, I got a warning about it from a pair of Maine Wardens who came out to a mile-or-so-off-Maine island that I'd camped on the night before. They said that they'd been searching for me because I'd parked my car on private property (hmmm; it had looked to me like just a typical pull-off area) and the landowner had been worried as he'd seen me carrying my canoe out across the tidal flats at dusk. They had also gotten my car towed a few miles south, to Machias, and said that since I was in violation of the law due to my lack of life gear in the canoe, I was required to ride with them in their motorboat (which the canoe easily fit across the gunwales of) to Machias with them. Besides "No life gear in canoe", they couldn't resist adding what I thought then and still think, was a simply bigoted remark at the bottom of the written warning - "Stay off salt water in a canoe". Ha! My dad and I had been using a canoe to go 3 miles out to our favorite Virginia barrier island throughout my childhood without corrosion from the salt being an issue. But that wasn't even the funniest part. The funniest part was that as these Maine Wardens were standing there on the island lecturing me, they had their backs to their boat, and it started drifting away! I had to point that fact out to them real quick! If I hadn't, I would have been "rescuing" THEM!
