Should you Rebuild your Front Suspension and Steering Linkage outside in the Driveway?

This video takes you through the process of rebuilding the suspension on a 2 wheel drive OBS Chevrolet (1989 C 1500), with only basic tools, outside in the driveway. Instead of replacing the parts on a need basis, I ordered an entire kit that included all the balljoints, tie rod parts, stabilizer links and even a new pitman arm and idler arm. The price for a kit was far more economical than even just ordering any five parts on their own.
This video is part 19 of the ongoing pickup truck rebuilding playlist:

Yeah, you need a new coupler for the grease gun it should not be pumping grease anywhere but through the fitting. Even if the grease fitting is clogged, the grease should not escape. If you make sure you pull the coupler straight off the zert and not pull it sideways, your coupler and zerts will last a lot longer. They sell quick release coupler that work quite well and last a long time, however, you can buy several standard ones for the price of a good quick release. A new coupler will most times be hard to remove pulling it straight out. I used to keep a common screwdriver close and just pop it straight off with it until the coupler broke in. Your getting real close to driving that truck around the block!

Last one I bought is crap as it's supposed to slide in and pump from the side. Should have paid more attention buying it. Truck is driving now, back alley tests for now 😆

I don't blame you for leaving the old lower ball joint in as long as it looks okay, because how do we know that the new ones aren't made-in-China crap that will fail sooner anyhow? I don't know how often lower ball joints fail on '89 Chevys and I've never heard about one of them failing. But on the other hand, I see in the video that the design of it has one similarity to that of my 2003 Tacoma: The weight of the vehicle is always trying to pull the lower ball joint out. I had the lower ball joint fail on my 2003 Tacoma, twice in a just-over-6-month period, a few years ago. Luckily, I was only going about 25 mph both times, so it was just a matter of getting it towed home and having the embarrassment of calling my friend the paperboymaster (known in politically-correct circles as District Manager) to make him do my newspaper route for me for the couple of days that it would take me to replace it. It would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall of the paperboymaster's brain during the second time it happened, when I would imagine that one might think: why would Tom Frost be using a ball joint failure as an excuse for a second time in barely over 6 months, other than perhaps he's making it up so that he can get a couple of days off? Well, in hindsight, the reason it happened the second time was likely because the junkyard knuckle that I'd replaced the whole knuckle with the first time and which I'd assumed was the same because it looked the same even though it was off of a 4-Runner instead of a Tacoma, actually had a hair-different turning radius, putting extra strain on the ball joint over the course of those 6 months. Tacomas up to 2003 have somewhat of a reputation for having their lower ball joints fail, based on how I easily found various stories on the internet about it happening, and then I read that in 2004 or so they changed the design to stop it from happening.

Interesting story. I had no idea older Tacomas had this problem. On my Chevy it seems like the lower balljoints are basically like new, except for the boots, which tells me they're a few years old. I'm hoping all this stuff will hold up well. I'll be using the truck mostly here in town (pothole central 😆).
