I also feel that bird photography in woodlands is not that easy. Often the birds are perched high up in the trees and Hidden by canopy. Then I find it difficult to hold the camera above my head all the time. And making pictures of birds at this angle is not very satisfying. I would recommend to go onto open farmland where small trees or brushes are lining the path. An open meadow with ponds is also a good spot.
@damianjohnwildlife20 сағат бұрын
It's a tough challenge for exactly all the reasons you noted, I've spent hours with a camera pointed up to the canopy resting on my face and again as you said, never got anything satisfactory. Looks like it's meadows and ponds for the rest of the Summer now! Cheers for watching and thank you for your comment! :)

Great video - it certainly is difficult to get good shots of martins, etc., but I thought yours were really good. I have trouble even spotting them in the sky, let alone find them in the viewfinder!! And I just wanted to add, how jammy are you, seeing the fox?!! Thanks for another true to life, honest record of your wildlife adventures. Always enjoyable and I look forward to your next!
@damianjohnwildlife8 күн бұрын
It's so difficult isn't it! Especially when using a mirrorless camera, I know some folks who somehow keep both eyes open, one looking through the viewfinder and the other on the bird tracking it through the sky. It's a technique I'm years away from mastering. That fox was one hell of a sighting thanks to my buddy Luke, the footage was shot in 8k and incredibly cropped in. It was miles away. Thank you so much once again for your support, I really appreciate it 😄

Great choice, just a tip. Slowly, slowly lower the shutter speed and you will get much cleaner RAW files too. Since the lens is very lightweight and has awesome stabilisation. First take a few safe shots at higher shutter speed, when the bird is perched lower the ISO take more bursts at lower shutter speeds. You can handhold this lens even at 1/60-1/80th of a shutter speed. Great photos btwn. 👍

I’d be interested in your views comparing the canon and nikon set up. I’ve heard the canon autofocus is a little better than nikon for birds but I’d be interested in your experience.
@damianjohnwildlife15 күн бұрын
It's an interesting point. I used to own a Z9 which I used for low light concerts and the autofocus was mind blowingly good. Likewise, I took the Z8 out last night to photograph a prom and it was incredible, never once missed. For birds however, there have been times when I've been photographing a stationary perched bird and it just hasn't wanted to lock on, the AF planted squarly on the background not willing to move. Forcing me to shift position, photograph on something different a little closer then hope the bird is still perched where I left it. It's done this a few times using a few different focus modes and autofocus selection box sizes. I'd assume this was down to the lens more so but either way, it's not something I experienced that often when using the Canon gear. I can only hope that Nikon implements a firmware update which helps with AF performance for this partiucular lens or it could be something I'm personally doing wrong which I could improve on, only time will tell. Cheers for the comment!

I enjoyed this. I’ve never used a flash for macro work and I was just toying with selling my flash gun due to a lack of use. Perhaps I should keep it. Someone in the comments was a bit harsh (pun intended) with your use of flash and the results but I’d tend to disagree. With a lower flash output you may have got better results. They suggested to use a tripod and all the other things which to me simply restrict the freedom of how you’ve worked for these shots. There’s a certain loss of spontaneity when setting up a tripod, it can be a real bore and time consuming especially when insects move or decide to fly off and it won’t really help with wind and movement of the insects. I’ve missed possible shots of other insects when my camera is fixed to a tripod but hand held these opportunities can often be utilised. As with all things being flexible is best and as an exercise in practise with handheld macro and flash this was a success.
@damianjohnwildlife23 күн бұрын
Heya, thank you for such a thought out comment. I think there's a time and place for such spontaneity and going through the process of meticulously setting up a shot.... Not going to lie, I much prefer the spontaneity 🤣 I'm glad you understood the vibe of this video, I was never going for award winning images, I just wanted to have some fun on a weekend. 😄 Cheers!

Your video sequences showing these insects are 1000 times better than the flashed to death (and no diffusor in the world would have made it better) snapshots! Get yourself a tripod, remote release and maybe a diffusor (for those times when the natural light becomes too harsh) and your photos will become as good as your video sequences!

If you use focus peaking ... I would suggest to put it on 'Low' rather than 'High' . Will help you a lot . Also getting a DCR-250 maybe be beneficial .
@damianjohnwildlife29 күн бұрын
The low focus peaking is genuinely a great shout and something I would never have considered. Looking back now I've been through all my images, a bunch were just ever so slightly out despite my peaking saying they were fine. I was using High so I presume it was showing a larger area of focus opposed to a thin sliver at critical. Cheers for the advice!

I would use the R5 with 2x converter to see if there is much difference due to more MP... I doubt it, the 24 of R3 is prob enough.

You're right though, the higher megapixel count would help show any inconsistencies of the lens a lot clearer, it would be a cool experiment to try.
