Ok dont you need to engage the half nut on a certain number everytime, or can you just skip that part and leave it on the lead screw all the time? Thanks and awesome video
@trentgriswold3 ай бұрын
Good observation. You can most certainly leave it engaged the whole time. On that particular lathe, it depends on the thread you are cutting as far as when to engage. You can actually engage on any number for 1/2x28 threads. Not the case on many other lathes. Thanks for watching!

Dumb 16” rule for barrels. Someday that will be overturned by SCOTUS.

If you're flirting with calibers that torch a barrel within 1000rds I'd go predict. In fact I'd consider a cheaper prefit just to get a feel for a caliber during load development. I've seen enough oddball or hyped caliber reloading sets get summarily dumped for the next one cheap.

How did the shorter barrel and new crown affect your accuracy and velocity from before? I’m considering cutting and doing the same to my barrel on a 6.5 SAUM but a bit worried about accuracy and speed after it’s done.
@trentgriswold4 ай бұрын
The accuracy increased. Many people correlate velocity with accuracy and that’s simply not the case. A shorter barrel is more rigid and has less “whip”. With that said there are reasons for wanting or needing higher velocity, stability at extended ranges or just in general, expansion or penetration etc. But for instance, many of the bolt guns we build for LE swat teams are shorter than 20” and as short as 14” due to them not typically engaging targets over 75 yards. I still shoot my 20” .308’s well past 1000yds. You just need to way all those options and come up with a formula that fits your mission. If you don’t need it shorter and it already meets your accuracy needs I would probably leave it as is. I do plan on doing a video measuring the loss of velocity when cutting down at some point.

Did you lap the bolt lugs before measuring from the receiver ring to the bolt?

I always check engagement to see if lapping is necessary. If engagement was not consistent across all three lugs, then yes, I would certainly lap before proceeding with my measurements.

It should be noted that "prefit" spec barrels are machined to a dimensional size.......typically middle of the acceptable tolerance range of the tenon threads and chamber headspace callout from the action manufacturer. This does put the barrel fitment (thread class) and installed headspace sloppier than the custom "to your action" fitment that any reputable top-tier rifle builder can give you. Whether or not this shows up on target.....is anyone's guess. But I can guarantee a sloppier fit does not IMPROVE accuracy. There is also no option to specify reamer specs, custom throat out, etc. on prefits. I think prefits have their place......easy to order.....in-stock or short leadtimes......and can be swapped from action to action readily. Just don't expect to win any benchrest or top level PRS matches with it. If you go the prefit route, I recommend going with a reputable company. Too many guys get a low-end CNC lathe and start pumping out budget prefits and don't know the issues with CNC chambering. Also, just because you can torque an action on a prefit barrel and drop it in a chassis stock.......doesn't mean you are a rifle builder.......just like changing your own oil doesn't make you a race car builder......hahaha

When I would build a Highly accurate and custom rifle, I would go to Pawn shops looking for Mauser 98 rifles to buy just for the action. I would work over the 98 action then use the Pac Nor super match barrels. The old-time tested Mauser 98 can't be beat for reliable function and supper great redone into a custom rifle. I would use the Boyds stocks for great fit and good looks.

@lurebenson77222 ай бұрын
@@charlesmullins3238 Are you referring to just the 98k Mausers or other Mauser actions because just the old 98 actions are more than one, so you need to know what you have when building up one for a custom rifle. I have a commercial Mauser 98 in 300 Wby mag and I have the rarest of all the Brevex Mauser I've done on a Douglas 30 inch barrel in 8mm-378 Wby mag. Then there are the Mauser 98 M for African cartridges that Mauser makes and 4 US company's make these also one is Grant Mountain Mausers
