in my opinion the sb one g3c is the absolute best tensioner for mountainbikes, if you have no budget, but if so the reverse sb one collab is the best for around 60€-80€

Lots of torque in BB when climbing with SS bike. Those eccentric BB look to be a constant pain. Track ends and bolts are tried and true

Honestly the cheapest and easiest chain tensioner is an old 7 speed derailleur and secure it with a shifter cable so that you can adjust it for an optimal chain line. It’s called “dingle shifter” an advantage of this besides from its low cost is your chain wont drop compared to a cheap chain tensioner.

What are the best chains to use for chain tensioners? I’ve tried so many but they PC1 from SRAM is the only one that doesn’t skip when pedaling, but this chain is expensive, any recommendations? I used the surly singulator

The STS works fine without the quick release fitting, it is removable and optional.

I have a kindernay vii on my eMTB. I originally purchased a tensioner directly from Kindernay with my order. It looks identical to the "da bomb rlx". Except without the branding. It is a total PoS. In less than a few hundred kilometres, the plain brass bushings in the pivot of the arm totoally wore out. Causing the entire arm to tilt over sideways. I would avoid Kindernay tensioner, (and Da Bonb if it is the same) at all costs. Because they are extremely powerful quality crap.

I fitted the DMR DTS to my single speed MTB conversion a couple of years ago and it has worked really well. There is some whirring noise but it isn't too bad. It's good that you pointed out the need for a quick release to use this DMR product though. Good review - thanks!

Wow, that's low tire pressure! The bike looks great and I'm sure it rides nice too. You might consider a Single Speed specific hub if your going to upgrade. They’re going to make a stronger wheel and just look better because of they're wider hub bodies and smaller free hub and very few spacers. Just a thought

Went SS last year. Never wanted to try it (I have knee issues) but with very limited trail/ride time, I thought dropping down to a 1x1 would make each ride count as a good workout. I'm amazed at how much I fell in love with it. Now both my gravel bike and mtb are SS. I can definitely relate to your thoughts and discoveries. I feel validated haha.

Hi, thanks for your video. I seriously considered getting a single speed MTB and decided not to for three main reasons: 1. I successfully did single speed simulations on my cyclocross bike. 2. It appears that the mechanical difficulties involved in setting up a single speed are actually fairly non-trivial. 3. I live in Switzerland right at the foot of numerous long climbs and so need a variety of gearing choices. Point 1 addresses all the physical benefits that you describe: by simply choosing a gear and never shifting, I obtain your exact physical workout. Point 2 is that I found it very difficult to get a single speed setup here as I'm not sufficiently mechanically inclined to do all the setup myself, as I would require a chain tensioner in order to have a wide variety of gearing options. In particular, my simulations showed that I would require at least a 30x24 and more probably 30x28 setup if I wanted to vary my riding, due to the long climbs (up to one hour). These rear cogs do not seems to be easily available and I would require changing between a 28T and a 20T, which means changing the chain each time, etc. Moreover, any 29" mountain bike would mean a significant increase in effective gearing requiring probably larger sprockets, so I would have preferred a 27.5 setup. I looked into Spot bikes which have a 27.5 option, but they use a belt drive which makes it very difficult and expensive to switch sprockets. It was also difficult for me to find crank based power meters for a possible single speed setup (I even contacted Spot and their belt drive is not compatible with a power meter), so I would have to buy a pedal based power meter, which I did not want to do for various reasons: limited pedal choice (I don't like Garmin and SRM is out of stock) including excluding flat pedals. Generally, I found that the gearing options and setup was much harder to do than for my fixie (converted track bike on the road), where I can go from 45x19 to 48x16. Point 3 is my general conclusion that single speed mountain biking is a viable alternative only if the steep section are relatively short, that is, max time less than a few minutes. In particular, my simulations showed that I would require minute efforts at about 400W and slightly longer efforts at about 300W. Since my FTP is low, about 200W, that means that I would not be able to sustain much longer efforts without much lower gearing. In one simulation, I did a 5 minute 12 to 15% climb at about 35 rpm average (seated), and my knees were sore for about 3 weeks, so I would avoid this without gearing allowing me to be at least at 50 rpm (but maybe I should have do it standing, as you recommend). With a geared mountain bike all these issues are resolved, as I can now enjoy the physical benefits of single speed mountain biking, but on varied terrain, by simply choosing the appropriate gear for the given terrain by simply using my shifter once at the start of the ride. Once again, my general conclusion that single speed mountain biking is a viable alternative only if steep section are relatively short, that is, max time less than a few minutes.

First MTB bike was a single speed ridged mtb and I swear it made me a better rider to this day.

Forgot to mention: - I used a torque wrench to ensure my cranks were installed to the correct specs - I also used the torque wrench to make sure the ISCG bolt were evenly loaded
