I disagree with these definitions. Primary data is source data. In the first example given, I would argue that the newspaper records represent the primary data. In the second example, interviews with participants in a study would create primary data initially (eg. video files) which may then be manipulated to create secondary data (eg. transcripts). Open source data held in data repositories may, therefore, be a mixture of both. As another researcher wishing to replicate or utilise this research I may wish to use or access the primary data (ie. the original newspaper records) and (video interviews) in preference to the secondary data or "downstream" data, so that I can re-analyse the data from the original source.

The knowledge of managing data as a researcher is quite important. This is a good video reminding me of it.
