I'd like to see a lot more on your short chip and pitch philosophy - about the minimum movement to get the job done. In a previous video a few years back you talked about reducing movement to a minimum to reduce risk - for example, a big backswing to loft the ball close vs. taking a less lofted club and just chip-putting it across the green, landing just a yard onto the green. This is certainly how I was taught by a teacher who had played the Open 5 times in his pro career - so it has credibility. He had two ways of chipping - a putt chip which used any club as a putter, choke down, with a putting grip, and just treat the shot as a putt. And the same technique but even shorter down the grip, which puts the club on end and so it is toe-chipped - only the toe goes through the grass so very little chance of it digging in is the advantage. The toe chip has to be hit much harder as the weight of the clubhead isn't behind the ball. Something of your prep for the Seniors Open with chips out to, say, 30-40 yards as the core content would be great - your take on this would be so incredibly educational.

Great to see you mixing up playing with feeling/sensing practice ground strokes. This approach is very very interesting and feels right on the money. Many other players take the contrary approach - for example, someone like Bryson DeChambeau seems big into high levels of repetition and exactness - that's what his PR says anyway. And that's what my buddies do. After retiring from business I worked as a full-time guitar player and teacher. And I've always thought the process of learning and practising golf was similar to guitar. When teaching, I'd be helping students with endless scales, chord shapes, solo techniques and templates, and grinding through a new piece. The technicalities and geometry of playing. A lot like a golf student getting around a new course in the early days. Your "Practising for The Open" gives me even more evidence to say preparing for a golf event and a guitar gig are so similar. Getting ready for a big musical gig I wouldn't spend much time relearning scales and chords and positional play up the neck (technicalities). I'd be playing the tunes. I'd get out and play in the environment I'll be in - on a stage, with an audience, with other players. I'd develop and wrap acceptable solos so no stress on the day. LOOKING FOR THE FEEL - THE MOJO. Sounds familiar?? But these videos are so refreshing and following them is so much more interesting and positive than repetition practice - 50x of this and that. These are great videos, Eric. So inspirational. And I hope as motivational for you as they are for us.

I'm finding all these comments and experiences of you using trust, feelings, and synchronisation of club and body rotation, inspirational. A month ago I hit a bad patch after being away from the course for a few weeks - and I tried (as is my habit) to get back to striking the ball, by going back over all my notes from the past. This involved measuring where the butt pointed at the top, how the shaft was coming through horizontal, where my right shoulder was at impact, the path of my right el;bow, where the clubhead went after impact - and on and on like that. My results descended, not improved. Well, that was until you started to post these videos and I turned a huge corner. Picking off the top things you were feeling and sensing whilst doing practice strokes - to 2/3rds distance and 2/3rds speed - I concentrated on feels. On senses. The easy rhythm of a swinging club at 1/2 - 2/3rds. And I've started to play better. 9th yesterday from 39 in the Seniors Stableford -- so your work on these videos is improving my results Eric. I can easily apply the content in a way that my notes on technicalities, measurement, and geometry couldn't. It's massively got me rethinking how I practice and play. Thank you so much for posting these thoughts Eric, we really appreciate the work.

You’re right there. Only concentrating non feel as Eric is doing here, I went round the first ten holes of our course in just 4 over par - normally I’d take 8 or 9 over. These two preparation videos have been extremely informative

Being naturally very analytical, I would habitually concentrate on geometry, position points, and alignment. Eric's focus on feelings in these first two videos has come as a complete surprise. For example, I have a one-page checklist I take to practice that's 813 words. With a change of focus, I've cut that back to a small card with 122 words on feels. It's a huge and radical change to my focus from technical to feel. I suddenly started to feel some moves that have always confused me. What an insight. You're a magician Eric!

As Eric is a local to you, maybe you can get him back soon to talk about his focus on swing feelings rather than technical geometry? So much golf instruction is about aiming the golf club somewhere or hitting body movement patterns. Eric seems to be tuning in to the very essence of a swing that's very unusual.

Listen. I’d like to help. You are a rear post and an under right hand grip and elbow. Which is fine, IF it is in fact what you are supposed to be. However, you are demonstrating an intended release pattern that is NOT a matchup for that grip and elbow. It is a mismatch. You are demonstrating a right hand and elbow release that is a fit for an on top grip and elbow. The opposite of you. Just allow it to release naturally. Also, forget about this “synchronization” and the cautiousness that comes about because of the attempt. Start moving. Get dynamic. Allow your instinct and ability to govern the motion and quit trying to be so god damn careful. Get “reckless”. Also, forget about this imaginary “plane”. There is no such thing and the concept itself is toxic. Let the club swing freely and quit trying to make it go where you think it should. Remember, preferences are the enemy of success. Patches out.

Haha - er - you do realise that Eric has won over 50 events in his career? If you watch his other videos on this channel and a lot with Brendon DeVore on the Be Better Golf channel, you'll hear Eric cover all the errors his swing has that are not going to get fixed after all this time. So you're correct - but Eric knows - and Eric has to work with the "Swing he Brung" as Snead would say.

@@ChristopherDowning I think you’ve missed the point. There is nothing wrong with Eric’s swing IF IF IF 1) He is in the proper grip- for him 2) He is utilizing the proper lower body pivot action- for him *you can test for both of these 3) He swings the club freely Currently, he is employing 3 toxic concepts; “plane”, “synchronization”, and a mismatched release The concept of “swing plane” assumes that the club, from the grip end to the clubhead, lie flat against an inclined angle at address, and that angle adjusts steeper and shallower during the swing, all the while maintaining the same baseline. This is simply not the case. The grip end and the clubhead take wildly different paths in their journeys around the body. This toxic plane concept should be thrown into the gaping bin of myths and mysticisms due to what today’s modern technological measuring devices and the hundreds of elite players that have participated in getting measured have clearly revealed. Trying to manipulate the club through some imagined idealization produces CONSTRAINT. We don’t want constraints The concept of “synchronization” assumes that we want the body, the arms, and the club to be moving together at some point in the downswing and though the ball. This is exactly NOT what elite players do. The movements, or what Eric refers to as the “geometry” are 100% resultant of the physics; the force that the golfer applies that result in the movements that you see. Elite golfers do not get the force from the movements. This is quite literally backwards. Timing the application of these forces with the travel of the club IS the true measure of “synchronization” in a golf swing. The peak magnitude of these force applications occur before the club even reaches parallel to the ground in the downswing. The concept of trying to get everything to move together sounds good and all but is just not a reality of what occurs in the swings of elite players. The attempt inspires CONSTRAINT. We don’t want constraints. We want dynamic motion. Not motion that is attractive or aligns with someone’s preferences NOBODY, whether you have won the Botswana Open or the Masters or US Open is able to play well with a mismatched release. An under grip and an on top release or an on top grip and an under release is worse case scenario in golf. Ask Jordan Spieth or Brooks Keopka or Yani Tseng. The release that Eric is demonstrating as an intent is a closing action; the opposite of the one that fits the grip type that he is currently employing. If he does in fact measure out to be an under grip like the one he is using, he needs to release it like Dustin Johnson. He is demonstrating a release type that is a fit for an on top grip golfer like Sergio Garcia If you get matched up you can SWING IT without worry about where the club is in relation to planes or where you think your body should be. So get matched up and never mind the bullocks Patches out ✌️

Thank you so much for this overview of your drills and exercises for getting ready for the Seniors Qualifying. This would make an excellent set of swing exercises for anyone preparing for a comp. I like the idea of working on feel until that's near perfect before looking at any technicals. So shorter swing / shorter targets to get the body and arms synced up - then longer swing / longer targets. And, the 58, Wedge, and 8i as the work tools initially with 3/4 swings. This is a great video. Preparing for an event is so rarely covered. Or when it is, it's so glib, that it's not something the rest of us could usefully use as a template. This video absolutely meets the requirement - smashed it! I'm starting to use this as my swing development plan from today.

The release of the wrists are attached to the body...when you post up (pushing off the ground and straightening of the left leg) the left hip goes up and in assisting is the release of the wrists at impact ...there's a lot of mass behind the clubhead when your synched up 👍 Hope that helps!
