You could get almost all of the benefits you talked about of shooting film on a digital camera by using it differently. Thats what I have to do, shooting film is too stressful for me. That double checking you talked about is hell for me. Very good video and points. Im subscribed. Keep it going.

Why is everybody so concerned about the medium? It's ridiculous. Nobody ever talks about photography aymore.

hi noah! i love your general channel vibe and thumbnail style :) also, great b-roll! i'm trying to not sound like an a-hole, but i'd love to give a you a little tip when it comes to the video storytelling side. i personally think this video'd be better if you were to pace different bits of the video differently, try and make different parts or chapters within the video. because respectfully, i do think it sounds a bit longwinded this way. again, this is just a tip, use it if you want to, if not that's also fine. keep up the great work!

Great video! I have a similar love for Spotmatics. I’ve got 5 Spotties, and my fave is my black and brassy Spotmatics II. I hope Pentax brings back something similar now that the 17 has sold quite a few already.

I feel this. I picked up a Fujifilm STX-1 as my first film camera and the experience of a fully manual fully mechanical camera is hard to describe. Every time I crank the next shot it's just a bit of joy. Lenses are a bit of a pain to find, but they're cheap when I do find them.

Not sure if I agree with so much emphasis on price on ranking. Also giving a con for an inherent characteristics of a film (ektar for portraits?), film speed, and your limited experience (e100 at night?) doesn't seem fair and inconplete. But thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Do you like full manual SLR cameras? If not, what do you use instead and why?
@shanelennon7397
@shanelennon7397 5 күн бұрын
Full manual SLR camera's helped me overcome a bit of a slump i had found myself in in regards to photography, just something about the hands on nature of having to pull focus, dial in settings and getting the correct metering on top of composing through the viewfinder just really grounds you in the moment almost a sort of zen state. That's just my view on it and why I have such a love and respect for them.

If you like the Spotmatic SP, you are going to love the Pentax KX which is basically a Spotmatic F with a K mount plus a few other features. Snap a genuine Pentax M42 adapter, an LR44 battery, and off you go. Plus, it works with K lenses. Best viewfinder setup of the lot in my opinion as you can see the exposure triangle in the viewfinder.

Not all film cameras are mechanical. There are cameras full of electronics. The last Nikon film camera was created in 2004, and manufactured til 2020.

I am so happy to see someone your age passionate about film. And you couldn't have picked a better film camera to use. I have 2 Spotmatics and my favorite is an SP500, my first SLR I bought in a pawn shop 24 years ago. It's been everywhere... literally. And it is unfailingly reliable. I've never had it serviced or worked on. 50 years old and still works. You will not find a digital SLR that works in 50 years.

To me, I don’t give a damn about the tactility or “feeling” of shooting film. I care about quality. When I can shoot a negative the size or 8x10 inch and get hundreds of megapixels out of it, it is better than digital. When I can do movements and place my focal plane where I want, it is better than digital. When I can overexpose portraits 6 stops and still not clip the highlights, it is better than digital. When each place in my negative contains full color information instead of interpolating a Bayer matrix, it is better than digital. I am tired of people taking for granted that film has lower quality than digital just because they look at the shitty lomography film stocks. Film can have better quality than digital, that is why I shoot it.

I shoot B&W also. I have several film cameras. I keep B&W in one all the time.... not the same one, just at least one camera has B&W while another will have color. I also have an ongoing project of shooting around mid-Tennessee in B&W and much of that is on digital.... so I am back and forth with this... color/B&W/ film/digital.... some of everything.

Ilford XP2 Super 400 is the only black and white film that can be developed in C-41 process. So it makes it a unique film. Here in Japan where you can develop c-41 in one hour it’s a big deal.

Thanks! I really like Kentmere Pan 100 and 400 because they are cheap and perform well. I just released a Film Stock Tier List video where I ranked different film stocks that I've shot. I had 4 or 5 different black and white film stocks in that list with example photos. If you take a look at those I'm sure you'll find one you like.

I haven't personally shot Portra 800, but the results from the video are interesting, I like the more close up shots you showed, also love the color reproduction. I started out with expired Kodak Gold 200, which gave me one of my favorite shots I've done, I've shot a lot of Kodak Ultramax 400 now as it's actually still readily available for a decent price at the Walgreens only a couple blocks from where I live, so it was interesting to see a direct comparison. I get a lot of film from the lab where I usually have my shots developed so next time I'm in I'll see about grabbing a roll and testing it out, my Minolta Himatic AF2 could use a little love anyway lol great video!

It’s too bad many young photographers of today weren’t around during film’s heyday. In hindsight I was lucky to have been involved from the 60s, 70s and 80s when the choices were almost limitless. Film stocks like the undisputed king of color - Kodachrome - from back when the processing for it was available, Fuji Superia Reala 100, Ilford’s early stuff, Agfa, Adox, and so many more amazing films were plentiful and relatively cheap at around $2 per roll with processing and prints for another $2 or $3. I agree about the quality of the Kodak Portra line, especially the 800, but I’m sorry for you guys that the cost of film has risen so high. Film photography is such fun but the current costs have made it only accessible to those with lots of cash. Keep creating and embracing film. Magic is in your hands.

Digital media is that, its cheap and disposable. Shoot 200 frames, pic the best, delete the rest. Considering most rolls of 35mm film are 24 or 36 exp, you’ll be soon slowing down as the thought of cost looms ahead. One medium format you have even less.. 8 or 12 shots per roll so you think about it before going ahead.
@VariTimo

It comes down to scanning, Portra 800 has the best underexposure capability of any color film available today if you scan it right. You can really control the look by over or underexposing it. You can shoot it at 1600 without pushing it no problem.
