What sucked the most for me was the drill instructors. Almost all of them were southerners who had a hard on for anybody who was from north of the Mason Dixon Line. One of my squad leaders was from Tennessee and he was a real jerk. My best friend in bootcamp was a Puerto Rican kid from the Bronx (I'm from Boston). We got the northern boys together to watch out for each other. I can't stand rednecks to this day!

It's weak! I thought it was a joke back in 2000. When they spit in your face yelling and threw random things. Came in the middle of the night and destroyed your wall lockers etc etc. The military in 2022 is weak!

Regardless if you went to BMTS in 1962 or 2022. It is basically the same game. Bring you up to the minimal fitness standards, bring you up to mental standards and bring you up to the educational standards.. It is also to weed out those who exhibit a failure to adapt, dont want to uncover that in a wartime situation when other peoples lives hing on you doing your job. Go into it knowing it is a mind game. Do what they say to the best of your ability and dont give the TI's an attitude. Once you make it through its behind you. The real USAF is more relaxed. But everything you learn in basic is a building block for you moving forward. Dont give your leaders noise, I know there is some poo NCO and O's.. I have worked with some.. I have also worked with some great ones.. In today's USAF it is easier to get a bad apple out of the military than it is to keep a good one in. Very hard to justify a 5 EPR, no questions asked on giving someone a 4. Evals count for promotions.. If you plan to do 4 years and eject ok do 4 years eject.. But if you are undecided pretend you are staying and do what it takes to get hte good eval. If you plan to reach Chief aka E9. you need to start planning for it at E3.. Making BTZ, Making Staff Sergeant first time. The longer you take on anything puts you behind. Anytime any schooling or training is tasked of you such as 5 or 7 level training or PME.. GET IT DONE ASAP, push your boss to get you in it. Volunteer for jobs outside your specific trained job. Volunteer for special duty assignments. The key is move move move.. I bucked the system, did it my way, stayed at bases too long.. But in year 1 when the super intendent asked 12 airman in my work center, where do you see yourself in 20 years. All the folks around me said Chief E9. I knew most wouldnt make Staff. I said E7 Master Sergeant. I pinned on at my 19 year mark. I was not a bad troop, I didnt kiss ass, I didnt do the extra's. I did what I did the best i could.. did 24 years. If I just played the game a bit more, and listened ot the folks who tried the mentor me when I was young I could have for sure made E8.. In short if someone takes interest in you and tries tell you do this, do that, (personal growth stuff) listen to them.. Senior folks will pick a few junior folks to groom and mentor to grow. Seek out a mentor even if not your boss. I lost some jobs in my senior years due to me fighting for young troops who were problems, which I saw their boss was poor leaders. I won a few I lost a few. Integrity, service before self though a core values is a rare thing. You have to decide what is best for you and your moral compass. Take all the college courses you can on uncle sam's dime, when you get out use your GI bill why the benefits are there (time limit). Thanks for serving in my Air Force.. Good Luck!!

AF BT isn’t hard unless you can’t handle being snapped at like you just pissed your parents off…or you can’t fold shirts properly. It’s only as hard as you let it be for you. Accept you can’t do anything right and that you will get lightly smoked occasionally…not a big deal and it only lasts for 7 weeks I think.

Staying in boot camp longer due to not meeting PT could mean you may lose your job depending on what job that is, and you will end up with whatever they give you in it's place. So it is a big deal for someone to not be recycled.

What kind recommendation would you give to those girls, for example, that like me, it makes us feel a bit uncomfortable sharing the shower with other girls in basic training. I'm really sure that in most homes in the world, people showers individually contrary to what happens in basic training.

I went through a long time ago. It is a lot like a boy scout camp but with discipline. It is very easy compared to the other services. We were trained to provide more technical service than to be a combat service. Much has changed. Being yelled out is nothing.

NO FEAR! I speak from personal experience, you build things up in your head to be more than they are. When I went through "HAPPY VALLEY USA" (JSA Lackland aka Lackland AFB back in the day) you learned to take it one thing at a time, one moment at a time. If there's anything I remember more than anything about it, that would have to be the confidence (obstacle) course. In my flight ✈️ we had some of the most uncoordinated people you ever saw! One guy we called Tarzan and his buddy we called him George of the Jungle (watch ⌚ out for that tree!!!) I remember the T.I. @ the cliff yelling down "AIRMAN! GET YOU @$$ES UP HERE ON THE DOUBLE!!! DON'T MAKE ME COME DOWN THERE HERO! AND DON'T MAKE ME LATE FOR LUNCH!!! I loved BMT @ Lackland! (NOW I'D rather have a BLT and call 📞 it a day!)

@5:38min P.T.! Oh what joy! To go and do calisthenics and run 🏃‍♂️! (RUN FORREST! RUN!) Back in the day we did P.T. for 1 hour and ran for 15 minutes and gradually worked our way up to a mile. We did our calisthenics 3 days a week and ran 3 days a week. Alternating each every other day. Basic was for 8 weeks back in the late 1970s. We added a quarter of a mile to each weeks 3 days of running. 6 days @ 1/4 mile, 6 days @ 1/2 a mile, all the way until week 8 where we ran our 1 mile 6 days the last 2 for the grade and the final day for any stragglers who were given 1 last shot to make the cut. The USAF has evolved and modified its training methodology and no two flights of any period historically have the same experience but the service ethos is the same.

Rainbow is for 1 week. No shower when you first arrive in your flight, thats the 24 hours latter. No cell phones. Picked up at Airport by a Sargent . No writing names on anything. We were given two ink pads one black one white and a stamp with the last 4 digits of your social security number on it. This girl is an idiot. I am a USAF Vet

I'm 13 and I've always wanted to be in the Air force, specifically flying jets ext. And I know that you don't get to do it the first day, it takes years of being in the Air force and years of training to become a piolet but it just seems so cool and I can't wait until I'm older and get to be in the Air Force. The only thing that doesn't sound at all appealing and I would never want to do is be naked in front of alot of people.
