i sorn'ed my xj900f 7 mths ago, it was running fine before and had a carb service not that long ago at great expense. now i've started it up again, it isn't happy, running lumpy, choke mech is fine and the bike will both do 70 mph and tick over but it isn't right, it doesn't pick up well and i find myself reving to keep it running, slipping the clutch to pull away and generally it doesn't feel too good to ride. i'm not a mechanic but i think i could clean the jets using your video as a guide, i'd use spray carb cleaner as i haven't got that cleaning box. incidentally i changed the petrol and put fuel additive in but no difference to speak of.

Hi! Thanks so much for watching. The bronze bushings are fantastic. I bought some generic type from EBay which worked well. Just check that they’re oilite (I think that’s how it’s spelt!) oil impregnated bronze. There’s these from Charlie’s Place in the US too www.charlies-place.com/product-category/bronze-swing-arm-bushings/ Cheers Rich

Given the fact that the main frame bushing will be retained by the through bolt in use, is it Kosher to use some sort of lubricant (e.g. silicone spray) when pressing the bushings in?

Hello - if you have a source for the rubber bushing at the top of the headlight brackets that slip over the fork tubes, I would be delighted indeed to find a pair for my 1969 CB450 K2. The same inquiry applies to any other hard-to-come-by rubber bushings on the 450's. Common Motors stocks a wide variety of replacement parts for Honda twins, but alas does not list these.... Too bad you had to bin the roller bearings and races in the headtube, since these had already replaced the original loose-bearing set. At least Common Motors does stock a full kit of roller bearings, races, spacers and seals for the 450 head tube.

Love your series. I’m (still) rebuilding my 74 CB 450 and am literally stuck on the cam chain and camshafts. I simply can’t get the notches to line up. I’ve broken the chain and it’s loose at either end. I’ve taken the caps off for more freedom of movement but it feels as though the shaft is jammed at a certain point (about half an inch from lining up). I’ve got to take the engine off frame again and dig a little deeper. Any suggestions?
@ratmotors903
@ratmotors903 Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for watching! Yes, it will feel like that as you’ve got to push against the valves as you line it up. Brass punch or similar to hold it. Worse case, it could also be that there’s some chain in the bottom end. I’d check the broken chain carefully to see if there’s anything missing.

Should the idle screw be backed all the way off for the slide sync process?
@ratmotors903

Not to my knowledge. It just controls either how much air or fuel (depending on siting) is engaged before the throttle is twisted. Slides are moved by the throttle and are a different circuit in the system.

Thanks for watching! Don’t worry, it fought me every bit of the way. This is the second time round. I did a complete crank up rebuild. Most JIS fasteners on the engine needed drilling out, I had to enlarged and tap most threads in the cylinder head and a re-bore to fix some major scoring in the cylinders. Can certainly sympathise with the fight! I had a lot of use out of my manual impact driver as it came apart the first time.

I think i just did a mistake. I lined up the marks on the two cams and the LT mark as well. But after i turned the engine i realized that the Lt mark is not on the compression stroke. Do i need to reinstall the cam chain?
@ratmotors903
@ratmotors903 Жыл бұрын
Hi, without seeing it it's difficult to say. You do however hit the compression stroke 360 degrees (full engine turn) again on LT? I'm assuming you think that install needs to be on the compression stroke i.e all three marks line up on compression stroke? They should line up on the 'off' stroke. The cam lobes determine which 'stroke' occurs when and don't change relative to the index marks so as long as all three marks were aligned when you put it on you should be fine.
@vitotrials4948
@vitotrials4948 Жыл бұрын
@@ratmotors903 Thanks for your answer. I installed and lined up everything on the offstroke. If i turn the engine to the compression stroke on the left cylinder, the marks on the cams are not align like before on the offstroke. But i am glad that i asked you. At the weeked i planed to reinstall the cam aligned on the compression stroke. So now i can safe that time.

you stated that your 450 is or is going to run pod air filters , and you have pattern exhausts ? also the stock main jets are 125's ? . Think you will find stock for your late model 450 (disc brake ) stock jets are 130's , also the stock air filter/airbox set up does flow a good amount of air , the exhausts tend to be the restriction , especially if carboned up , with less restrictive air filters and exhaust you would normally need to go 20% larger in jet size , not smaller . I suspect you will run weak above 3-4k rpm with 120's .
@ratmotors903
@ratmotors903 Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your feedback. Honestly, I ended up in a total confusion of settings, jet sizes, filter densities, exhausts, manuals and ended up resting on this combination. The exhausts are brand new so no carbon deposits as yet. I had stutters at 3-4 on tachometer so upped the jet sizes slowly. Ended up with 145 and found it impossible to idle. Wet plugs too. Dropped it back down. Had big issues with feeling which I then thought could explain the stuttering at higher rpms. There’s a lot of conflicting info. Clymer, Haynes and Honda service manual all state different jet sizes. 125 or 130. For mums again are a little conflicting. I’ve gone with the 125s for now and will assess the situation as I get going. I dare say I’ll end up somewhere around 130/135. I’d really love to source some original air boxes! Thanks for your input.

@ratmotors903 Жыл бұрын
Hi. There’s a few different hoses. There’s the larger hose from the T piece which is fuel, from the fuel tap there’s a vacuum hose as well. The cluster of hoses underneath the carbs are overflow from the float bowls. You’ll want these routed so of there’s overflow of fuel it exits under the bike. I think they tuck behind the crankcase pointing down. The other two fuel and vacuum head up to the fuel tap.

Hi, thanks for watching! If I understand correctly, you are trying to turn the exhaust cam to the timing marks? Basically, you have to push the cam around, forcing the valves open. It’s really quite hard to move them. Either take a brass punch and push it over or I gently turned it with a socket on the end of the camshaft where the points are. Easier to turn the cam over but you have to be careful of the points plate.

Watched your throttle shaft build , as you may now be aware those felt seals should be oiled - light oil, 3 in 1 , green oil etc - also the shaft in the carb body should be lubed as metal on alloy; running dry creates a lot of ware , plus you are less likely to get air leaks from throttle shaft if the felts are wet with oil.FYI the original air filter set up is 2 filters with a joining tube , the flow air so well that if 1 became clogged the other would flow enough air for both carbs , with no loss of performance , hence why you might need to drop jet size down .

Ref your mixture screw seals - the cheap low grade fuels available now in the UK are 10% ethernol which destroys rubber o-ring's/seals in the fuel system , nitron rubber is meant to be able to survive the low grade fuel , try and sorce 'o' rings/seals made from nitron rubber , also stick to premium fuel ,less ethernol and the bike runs better on premium .
@ratmotors903
@ratmotors903 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. All seals and o-rings are good. 97 used in tank. Most kits come from USA where they have a much higher percentage of ethanol. As far as I’m aware those I’ve used are nitrile which are good in 10% ethanol environments. Best tip is to make sure fuel doesn’t sit for long periods of time in carbs. Fuel additives are good practice too.
