If you are concerned for your teenager it might be helpful to talk with her directly, liaise with the school to seek feedback, talk with friends and family to seek their perspective, and consult with a professional such as a GP or counsellor. This is not therapeutic advice but hopefully helpful ideas for you to consider.

So too much work is a risk for burn-out... thanks doc.... Anyone who suffers from burnout doesn't need someone to tell them... It's not something that can be fixed by any therapist or a conversation with your boss. All you'll get from a therapist is a big bill and, if you're in America, probably a prescription for an antidepressants that does nothing for it. There is no quick fix. It requires work towards finding work-life balance, a healthy body and surrounding one's self with good friends and family. Burnout is not just about work. But, it can be similar to PTSD in that some workplaces subject you to prolonged stress that you come to dread. For this reason, simply taking a break won't help. It can make it worse if you come to fear and dread going back to the work environment you just came from.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate it. I agree that stress and distress are on a continuum and that this might range from mild symptoms all the way through to PTSD. This is something that I did not cover in the video. I also agree that there are many strategies to overcome burnout and stress. I agree that work-life balance, a healthy body, and surrounding oneself with good finds and family is super important. Take care.

Now imagine if you have ADHD and LD and perform slower. The manager,trainer and bosses will find a way to kick you out by giving out unreasonable PIP assignments which are guaranteed designed to make you fail. The whole work culture is flawed.

How exactly can the dial be reset?
@drkateowen
@drkateowen 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian. A few ideas: activities that calm the central nervous system like meditation, mindfulness, breathing, yoga, etc. As well as developing awareness related to patterns of reacting and actively trying to respond differently (more thoughtfully and mindfully living in alignment with values as opposed to stress reactions). I hope this is a good starting point for further exploration.

@@drkateowen It is, I burnt myself out last year by driving my studies with the adrenaline from anxiety I didn't know I had, until it became harder to do a reading assignment than attempt a 3k at a 7:30-8 minute mile pace, or wake up an hour early to walk two miles to a physical fitness evaluation. Rough times.

Hi Annie. I’m sorry to hear that. I’m not sure what industry you were in, but if it’s helpful I have a free self-care course at drkateowen.teachable.com/p/burnout-and-self-care-for-mental-health-professionals It is no substitute for professional support but perhaps a stepping stone. I hope you can get support from friends, family and/or a professional if needed. Take care Kate

I worked for a corporation where I was extremely burned out. They kept piling more and more on me and focused on "lean management" which means they don't want to hire people. I told management how burned out I was and how much it was taking a toll on my health and I was ignored. They didn't want to hear it. I had to quit because my health was going downhill fast. I had been working as such a high level and working so much overtime for six years that it had taken a toll on me.
