Ratchet straps are not a good idea, it is too easy to overtighten and damage the boat. Cam straps are a better option.

Here in Australia I always wonder about how beautiful majestic and wild the natural river would have been they decided to try and tame it . But not just the river . pretty much everywhere I look . The key phrase being try and tame it. . We changed it momentarily but it will never be tamed . :)

These are exactly the type of boaters who should not be on the Devils River. I have done a couple dozen canoe trips on that river and we never had the issues these guys faced, probably because we were better prepared and more skilled running whitewater. But if these guys think this is tough whitewater, then the just do not have the experience necessary to run wilderness whitewater rivers. Also, what they were wearing is exactly the type of clothing that can lead to injuries. And the limestone bottom is like extremely rough sandpaper that can remove skin if you swim those rapids, especially through Three Tier Waterfall, where they should have taken the left side line instead of the right. I am glad they survived and only suffered minor equipment damage, but they set themselves up for one potential disaster after another. The Devils is one of my favorite rivers to paddle, but it is NOT for everybody! If you get injured, then you are on your own with help a long way off, and there is no cell service to call for outside assistance. And you need to know how to read a river to run the Devils. Whatever else they do I hope they do NOT attempt many rivers in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia or other places with REAL whitewater!

Ahhhh....to be young and adventurous again! I'd go here in a heartbeat. In my youth (1974) we ventured to what is now called Westcave on the outskirts of Austin. Not a soul there. Not regulated. We hiked down to it and spent the afternoon. Even on a December day, we were protected from the elements and it was warm. There was a small cave with a stalactite, a trickling waterfall & ferns everywhere. I have re-visited in the early 2000s & while it's still beautiful, it's not as wild. Loved it when the guide talked about how the hippies gathered there and almost ruined it. I admitted to him that I was having deja vu....I had been there as a college student but it wasn't trashed. It was WILD. Thank you for sharing this adventure!

Two great boats! The OT 120 is very stable and more of a barge, not the best for maneuvering but I've never had a big deal about that. The Crew is great for paddling tandem or solo and has way more area for storage. If I could choose one, it would be the Crew since it has so much deck storage for camping trips in solo mode.
