Not really one of my favorite episodes, as it mirrors the WW2 film “Run Silent, Run Deep” too much to my liking. Still I liked Mark Lenard’s performance-he was a most gracious guest at Star Trek conventions and I have to this day fond memories of meeting him in 1977.

I like the use of all those extras for the wedding ceremony ( also great to see all those crew members ) and in other scenes too.I also enjoyed Kirk trying to sooth the female crew member who lost her fiance ( there're no chaplains in Star Trek,the captain handles that duty too ) It touched on the end of this episode where the Romulan commander says : In another life,I could've called you-FRIEND. Man,talk about respecting your adversary. Live Long and Proper

One of my absolute favourite episodes of TOS along with The Doomsday Machine. Its got everything, great acting, tense submarine like combat, first appearance of Mark Leonard, first appearance of the Romulans and the cloaking device, Uhura taking the helm (which is mind blowing for the 60's, a black lady flying a spaceship alongside Sulu next to her handling tactical), it handles the racism aspect of Stiles pretty well regarding Spock and his heritage given what Romulans look like. It's all great stuff. What always annoyed me in this episode was that phasers were depicted like torpedoes, but tbh this is still very early in the TOS run that we have not yet properly established how the weapons look and function yet (the term "photon torpedo" was not invented until later in the season, in "Arena" says Memory Alpha) so its ok, I mean the term "Starfleet" or "United Federation of Planets" STILL hasn't been invented yet as I recall. Apparently also the first and only time we see a 'phaser room', I think the closest we might get in the future is on Enterprise where Reed and Tucker work on the Phase Cannons. There was a sort of 'what if' episode done in Strange New Worlds regarding this event so it was essentially having some scenes recreated but with Pike as Captain instead of Kirk and they did a pretty good job in my opinion, which is high praise for Nu-Trek (though it wobbled at the end because of we had to have as many ships on the screen as possible at the end shooting and exploding).
@LawnieLovesTrekАй бұрын
Hey Jay! Yeah, this phaser stuff was hand-waved away and ret-conned due to Kirk ordering the phasers to be set for proximity blast in order to flush out the Romulan ship. It also wasn't the first time Uhura took the helm, but it is memorable all the same! The fact that they redressed an entire set for the phaser banks was pretty cool I thought. And the fact they were able to establish so much without even having fundamentals that you mentioned like Starfleet.

I agree that this is one of the best TOS episodes. I was a bit surprised the obvious flaw was not mentioned in this video, though. Half way through the episode, both Sulu and Stiles were able to fire phasers from their bridge console. Yet in the end, the only way to fire was from the phaser room? I let it slide as a hole in the script yet not damaging enough to recant my fore mentioned love for the episode. Got a great giggle from the cutaway shot of the Spikers 1980s game destroying asteroids. Look forward to the next episode review.
@LawnieLovesTrekАй бұрын
Yeah, I thought about mentioning that, but I figured that was due to Tomlinson and his crew already queuing up some phasers in the banks and having them ready. At least, that's how I would explain it... to let it slide. ;)
@jamesbonato2836Ай бұрын
@@LawnieLovesTrek , yeah I just love that episode. Who cares about the plot hole. I suppose you can find them in just about every episode. Big deal. The other ones that stick in my craw was in "A Taste of Armageddon" where Ambassador Fox and his assistant were able to beam down with the shields up. And the other one.... oh don't get me started... was in "Where no Man has Gone Before" where they penetrated to edge of the galaxy, which drained most of their power... and then they are mysteriously back in the galaxy to go to Delta Vega. How'd they get back in the galaxy. One poster said "They never made it through the barrier. They just attempted it. Misleading to me since Kirk says they survived making it through the barrier as the Valiant did. But whatever.... it's Star Trek! Love it!!!!

Robert Walker walked away from acting a few years later. I’ve always wondered why. A former coworker of mine used to see Robert from time to time when he lived worked in Los Angeles. People didn’t bother celebrities like him there were a few others who left acting and just disappeared into the crowds of Los Angeles or went back to their home states. If you watch enough TV shows and films you too will notice actors who did the same thing.

There is nothing wrong with this episode. I like it. It provides a legitimate moral message. I don’t think it is accurate to imply that teenage young men didn’t like this episode because it reminded them too much of their own social awkwardness. As you point out, the episode ranks lower simply because it is surrounded by great episodes.

Once upon a time, being the IP holder conferred absolute control over a property. That day is dead. If the IP holder refuses to bring out new content or insists on only bringing out degraded content, then we can make our own. I invite all my fellow Trekkers to enjoy a completely free novel. Just google Star Trek Lost Destiny Race.

That attempted rape scene was horrible to watch,it must have been awful for the actress playing Yeomen to perform in. And Spock's talk to Yeomen Rand at the ending scene was tasteless and inhumane for him to say,being he's supposed to be the smartest one aboard ship. Smart enough to know better.

At first I thought you were going to say that we get introduced to the Spock we would see for the rest of the show. Not the emotional Spock of The Cage, or the cold and shouty Spock of Where No Man Has Gone Before, but the Spock we would come to love. That's one big reason why I think TOS should be watched in production order, rather than broadcast order. Years ago I heard a podcast about how the crew in this episode exhibits the various stages of grief, as described by Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, I believe. Not sure if that was intentional, but it's interesting to watch the episode with that in mind.

Ah, so that's the context for the famous "IIIII'M CAPTAIN KIRK!" scene. Good ol' transporter malfunctions, right up there with holodeck malfunctions and temporal anomalies for go-to Trek plot contrivances. As a kid I was all about the spectacle side of science fiction, with my favorite moments being large space battles with lots of "zoom-zoom pew-pew" going on. As I got older I learned that sci-fi's true strength lies in episodes like this; exploring the human condition in novel ways that other genres can't really match (I still like me some space battles from time to time, though).

I used to play Star Trek Online, a "free-to-play" MMO that was playable without spending a cent, but was filled to the brim with microtransactions and other ways to nickel-and-dime players to death by enticing them to bypass the grind, not to mention various limited time items and events to manipulate players into continuously playing or risk "missing out." I played longer than I normally would have solely because it was the only semi-decent modern Star Trek game out there. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was the introduction of "Mudd's Market," an in-game store that offered discontinued items at real world prices so absurdly expensive that it put the other monetization schemes to shame. There was an attempt by the devs to play it off with the connection to Mudd's con man ways, but it was so nakedly and egregiously greedy that it was clear that the people in charge of the game were just as unscrupulous as Mudd himself. You can't make this stuff up.
One of the best episodes. I believe it was the first episode made for the weekly series, after The Cage and Where No Man....

I'd say this is probably one of my first real favourite episodes of TOS. Uhura in a gold uniform is a bit odd when you're so used to seeing her in red! One thing to pay attention to as you go through, when is the first mention of the Federation, because I think for the first few episodes, it wasn't a thing, it was more Earth centric. I also think Bailey in this episode is how anyone in Discovery should've been handled when they get emotional. Notice how everyone is acting like a professional, Bailey is an understandable outlier but by the end of it, finds his courage. Also awesome to think how long Clint Howard has been a part of Star Trek right through to the current modern era!
