I bought about 22 or so Hendrix CDs back when MCA still had the rights to them. His work is so underplayed on the radio that many people haven't even heard some of his greatest songs.

When my parents bought the then new Very Best Of Dire Straits compilation by the end of the 90s, 15 year old me was immediately hooked. Of course there were the big hits, but the live version of Love Over Gold somehow connected with me. So I decided my first album of my new favourite band would be LoG, even though it only had 5 tracks on it. Best decision.

Been a fan of DS since the first LP. I purchased the Warner pressing of Love Over Gold when it was released (early 80s). I was immediately blown away by the mastering. The dynamic range on this pressing is phenomenal (even on my modest turntable setup at the time.) I have encountered few pressings that reproduced such a full sound (Paul McCartney and Wings, Back to the Egg was another great sounding pressing around that same timeframe).

I suspect both 2010 vinyl and the half speed were taken from the digital masters created by Stephen "Masher" Marcussen when he did the 2010 reissue. Apparently he had to bake the tapes to get them to play. That's why Miles Showell had to work off digital masters at Abbey Road. And those masters were not DSD256 or PCM, but much lower resolution. So, alas, the original analog source Mick'n'Keef heard in the LA studio is gone...

I loved the half speed too, until recently. I thought this was a terribly snobby take: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a814abKFrbrOlYE.html And then I went to all tube amplification, and got myself a HumminGuru. A road to damascus moment! My vinyl copies of Exile include a UK 79, an NL 87, two UK 72 early presses, and a US 78 Monarch repress. As well as the 2010 CD reissue, and an 80s CD. The UK 72 presses are cut from the same Artisan Sound lacquer as the much vaunted US 72 Monarch presses. All three of my Artisan Exiles beat the pants off any other version I've ever heard. More life, more detail, more bass. It's like night and day. But yes, you do need to spend both time and money to access this sound quality, and the half speeds are a good compromise if you're not going that way....

I love how both the keyboards (organ & piano) and guitars (lush is an appropriate description) really have a great interplay on this album. In 1971, Stephen Stills played keyboards on Ringo's "It Don't Come Easy" single. Although produced by George Harrison, the single has the great signature sound of Stills' interplay of keyboard & guitars.

I never had the opportunity to buy the original or the 30th-anniversary edition; therefore, I am happy to have the 50th-anniversary edition, which is still affordable. In 50 years, people will be happy to find the 100th-anniversary edition in their stores at a reasonable price. Only the audiophile sound, close to the analog master tape and as intended by the original artist, should matter, not the question of multiple re-releases.

I am glad you mentioned the Warfedale Anniversary speakers not needing a subwoofer. I have a friend with a pair. Indeed, if they don't play as low as a sub can, they are not rolled off in the lower bass. It is amazing how these phenomenal speakers can give the "presence" of very low bass, even though they may be rolled off delicately through an extremely historic amount of design, what we audio freaks call "tweaking." After all, they are the celebration of decades of continuous production, as "Anniversary Edition" suggests. An additional subwoofer would have to be extremely "focused" to blend with these delightful speakers and not color their soundstaging abilities. Set up, on proper stands in a good room, they provide satisfying musicality without any additional augmentation to the lower range.
