In USMC boot camp we had the Confidence Course with a flying man rope thing, probably 30-40 feet tall. We were over water should you, and many did, fall. ca 1980.

It is amusing how many phrases we still use today came from this era. "Bite the bullet" and "Show you the ropes" are just 2 examples

What is with these people from the past? Just put the cup mold on the ground and gently step on it don't hop up and down against your abdomen. Sheesh.

If I were in charge of the boats I would not use leggers. I would use a rope slightly longer than the tunnel and have a horse pull the boat through from the other end and use the boat to pull the empty rope through for the return trip. You would need two horses on each end. One to pull the boat the other to pull the next boat while the horse from the first boat walked the path back to the tunnel. Silly people.

I think that being a "powder monkey" would be the absolute worst job on the ship. Imagine being an 11 year old boy and your job is to run across a ship that is literally blowing up around you as you carry powder to gunnery crews, and to top it off you didn't even earn a wage but a bit of food and a cot to sleep in.

The legger job is ridiculous! Why on earth didnt they just have a basic pulley and rope system attached to the ceiling of the tunnel! Hell, you could even lash a pulley rope up via a steam engine to tug each boat through. Seems absolutely bizarre that no thought to fix such a simple problem.

11:34 am i missing some obscure english slang or is the phrase not "Catch a lift"
@aj2080xy6
@aj2080xy6 Жыл бұрын
"Cadge a lift" (or "cadge a smoke/fag" for a cigarette) is to get a spare or free lift from someone already going to the place (as in a ride without going out of the way.) Guess the cadge part has just been corrupted over time to mean "carry something extra."

Back in the late 60's, my brother and I would make our Christmas money plucking turkeys at a local farm for Thanksgivings and Christmases. I can tell you that the room was smelly and the work awful. Standing on a concrete floor for hours while your fingers became more sore than you could imagine, while the slaughtering of birds went on around you. Oh, and minimum wage was $1.65/hour back then. I'll let you do the math as to how much Christmas money we were able to make... Definitely one of the worst jobs I every had!
