I love how much he respects the people doing these jobs. It's just so cool that there's a show dedicated to the 'little guy' and showing his/her important place in history.

I'm glad to see that atleast British TV still has history on it. Here in America, what used to be historical programming is now about swamp people and looters.

I love around 30:08 when Tony falls off the horse, the horse stops and lowers his head towards him, as if asking "Mate, you okay?"

Yeah the horse is thinking What sort of numpty am I actually allowing to be on my back, and why?

I fell from a huge (18 hands!) Tenneess Walker named Slim. I was only 10 years old then, and due to Slim's size I could not get a good grip on him with my thighs. There I am on the ground under Slim who I was riding bareback. He stood looking down at me not moving at all. Finally, I got back up, and Slim looked at me as if to say, "Hey man, you all right?" Great horse and just gorgeous.

I just stumbled upon this series. I love it! Not only is it as gross as it is interesting (jolly good fun stuff!) but it's so funny to see Baldrick - the ultimate underdog of the Blackadder series - coughing, spitting, and nearly upchucking through the whole thing! This series is great fun...thanks for uploading!

Hey if you just stumbled across this series. I did the same thing but went back to Season 1, Episode 1 and it is a most excellent series. Worst jobs is real good, but he did another one about the paranormal and that is also good. He does the program like "down home" investigation. Both programs are very good. The BBC did an excellent job here !! Cherrio from the Colonies......

500 (200?) years ago Some of these "jobs" were top picks compared to being born in some "village". Brutality was the norm. Old age at and death between 30 and 40. England would probably have been annexed by the Vatican, or Spanish, with no separation between religion and state if it had been different. Lot's to be grateful for living now - with all it's problems. Though sad to see that there are cultures or groups of people that want to revisit some of these ages. Even in the UK we have illegal (child) workers, no contracts for work etc. Very Victorian. Great Series.
@Samhainmisfit12310 жыл бұрын
They did both have slaves, though it was slightly different than the notion that we had. Slaves for Africans and natives would generally being punished and then eventually (years and years) let go. In fact, many African tribes sold their fellow Africans as slaves to the Europeans. Sad, huh. Don't take my word for it of course, please look into it.

You can really tell that Tony is against the idea of a royal family. I did already know he was but I like his sarcastic comments like "no mail no king (and some might say that's not a bad thing)" or "the current queen has whittled down her staff to just over 600 people (poor thing)". At least he can see how, in this day and age, the last thing this country (or any country) needs is a royal family. They haven't even had any power for hundreds of years so they are just there to spend money.

hey zimmy, yeh thts right, re the dying process. AND in both cases, it was the air that makes the dye go the correct colour! blue from the woad plant and purple for this. actually, both are deemed royal colours, aye.
@zimmy60611 жыл бұрын
this dye making at the end, was done first season with some sort of plant. the funny thing is both really stank.
@RICDirector4 жыл бұрын
Woad. Many dyes are made through fermentation, so yeah--they reek. Onionskins are fun though--boil em up and dip your cloth, get a nice yellow or reddish depending on the onions you used.

I can't say I've ever met anyone who cares to meet the royal family, or would pay a cent to do it. However, a lot of Americans love Europe because of it's rich history. There's so much of it, and it's still there. It's fascinating. Even though we live in different places, we share a common heritage.

There's so many names that hark back to professions such as fulling, baking, thatching, etc. Do I assume correctly that the last name Falkner is derived from falconer and that Planer (as in Nigel Planer of The Young Ones) could have been a lance maker, planing away at the wooden shafts?
@franmike1525 жыл бұрын
Quite possible with Planer, though i'm more inclined to think it comes from carpentry in general.

Actually it was to have representation in Parlament (No taxation without representation). Notice how GB gave the Canadians, Austrailians and the New Zealanders a voice in the gov't relatively soon after our revolution. Most Colonists actually wanted to stay part of the British Empire. Kinda makes you think if it went the other way

The thing is - there had to be more than one boot boy or washer woman per castle/palace, - I would hope. One person couldn't do all of that, they'd get so sleep-deprived that it would make them fatigued to the point of insensibility and eventually sick, in a hurry.
@phantrash66596 жыл бұрын
What about the Whipping boy? Well I guess that ones not too bad even tho you get whipped every time the prince/princess bes bad but on the bright side the king and queen treat you like theirs when child,they feed 's you,tucks you in bed,dresses you,gives you a lot of rich kid toys,let's you play around in the castle,bathes you,makes you happy when your sad and more well that's not that bad :)

One of the falconry hawks looks like a Harris hawk, an American species. I wonder when was it introduced to European falconry.
@Wotdermatter7 жыл бұрын
The Harris Hawk, commonly known as Harris's Hawk, is indeed from the U.S.A. It was introduced to England in the 1960s and my now deceased friend Phillip Glasier, U.K.'s premier falconer/austringer during his lifetime, was one of the first to use such a bird. He established the Falconry Centre at Newent, Glos., and his daughter Jemima purchased the establishment when he finally retired and went to live and hunt, etc., in Scotland. The Harris should not have been included in this episode as it is not a native bird. Incidentally, hawks hunt for fur while falcons for feathers. Very few hunt both.

Actually, they chose to participate in an already existant slave market to source laborers. Just like everyone else at the time. The English nor the Americans hold any special responsability for slavery. We do, however own special responsability for ending it.

@aj2080xy6 Жыл бұрын
"Cadge a lift" (or "cadge a smoke/fag" for a cigarette) is to get a spare or free lift from someone already going to the place (as in a ride without going out of the way.) Guess the cadge part has just been corrupted over time to mean "carry something extra."
