Since you invested so much time in the process of reviewing and reacting, I will put forth effort I wouldn't usually in the comment. I will enter then edit as I am writing as I am watching. Self Titled- Self titled was a dreamy album she wrote as a kid who knew nothing about life or love, and he first and only real taste of true lifelong friendship/companionship comes through in her song "15" about her relationship with Abigail with whom she is still close friends. All the inspiration for the songs were literally from movies, TV shows, dreams, and people watching. A very naive and wistful view of the world. Fearless- Fearless was her first step out into the world a bit. She had real relationship experience (most people already know) with Joe Jonas and John Mayer. All of these relationships were of course superficial, holding hands, kissing. Vows of celibacy and all that jazz. Aside from John. He tried his best to sleep with her and when he couldn't get it he got frustrated and gave up resulting in Dear John as a response. But again, the reason these songs sound dreamy, romcom, and Disney is because they are. All of her ideas and experiences of romance are directly related to romance movies, books, shows, dreams and aren't based in real life. So there is a bit of a disconnect with people who do not share that sense of innocence and/or are a bit jaded already. Speak Now- Speak Now was written entirely by her- no co-writers on the songs as people in public were already starting to create and jump on a bandwagon of hate against her- from criticizing her relationships or discrediting how much of the lyrics and composing aspects of her albums were solely her own. To prove them wrong she wrote Speak Now entirely on her own. This album was also written during a really transitional point in her life. It was right after she won album of the year at the Grammys and the MTV incident with Kanye West. The bad and scary things that begin to happen when you become an unsheltered adult- moving out on your own, having to deal with cruel and sometimes unwarranted criticism and bullying on your own, and along with the amazing high of being elevated to such a status of popularity, also the fear of how far the inevitable fall will be. Red- It is funny how you mention the first half of the album wasn't for you. The first half of the album was written full of hopes and dreams after arriving in a new city, new experiences, new relationships... She was now fully in the spotlight, attending all the star studded events as a 20/21/22 year old. Imagine the world being your oyster and having the money, status, and connections for the sky to literally be the limit for you. The first half was written when she started her romance with Jake Gyllenhaal... Poor dear saw him in movies all growing up and probably felt like she knew him like we all get irrational attachments and ideas of our favorite actors and actresses. Like Robin Williams for 90s kids. Then when he swept her off her feet, told her all the right things, took her to meet his family for the holidays- she was convinced it was inevitable he would be the one she was going to marry and she fell hard and fast. And he was her first. She was waiting for marriage but since she knew that would come later she didn't wait. (The scarf she continuously references is a metaphor for her virginity). And then the second half of the album was the result of the break down and realization that it wasn't real and it would not lead to the happily ever after she was imagining. And that resulted in the jaded, melancholy, genuinely depressed rest of the album. It was raw and it was painful. Many people can connect with that. She also has a deep sense of foreboding about her inevitable downfall in the near future, with the song Lucky One and Nothing New- She is deeply intuned to the fact the bigger you are the harder you fall so with each increasing popularity she feels more existential dread for how it ends. *** Also, the reason she has such a romanticism about the 40s is because of her deep love and admiration of her grandparents and their love story. After seeing their love story- her grandfather going off to fight in the war, her grandmother waiting for him, and then the life they lived together is something she continuously references and revisits in multiple albums and multiple multiple songs going forward. 1989- It is so funny you mention Welcome to New York being a New York tourism song- because it absolutely is. She is an embassador for New York City Tourism. It also is the opening song for the Secret Life of Pets. Blue Dress on a boat is a reference to a media shared photo a paparazzi took of her leaving an island on a ferry in a beautiful, flowy, blue vacation dress after the break down of her relationship with Harry Styles. She left that vacation for two to fly home alone. In fact, the blue dress IS the actual dress she wears AND DESTROYS in the Out of the Woods music video. The paper airplane necklace she throws is also a gift and matching necklace she has/had with Harry Styles. Reputation-
@icebluelemonade
@icebluelemonade 17 сағат бұрын
Reputation- Before Taylor wrote and released Reputation her entire life was lived and her entire character was built of of the ideal that you have to always be a "good person" or a "good girl" or perfect role model. She always tried to be good, and a role model, and nice, be the bigger person ect... Only for people to harshly criticize her as being fake, inauthentic, and a snake. With Reputation she let's go of trying to be perfect and always fitting the image of good, and embraced the fact that it is okay to be less than perfect. It is okay to get angry. It is okay to say no. It is okay to be loud about what you want, what you've achieved, what you deserve, and even what you don't deserve. People are going to hate you. Not everyone is going to like you. And people are going to criticize you no matter what you do or don't do. *** References her relationship with Calvin Harris in Gorgeous and Getaway Car. Most of us Swifties erase the relationship with Calvin out if our minds and her relationship timelines because we just don't care for him. No legitimate reason why. But strong aversion to Calvin. *** Also, this album styling and more adult content is very heavily influenced by Game of Thrones. Lover- Most Swifties prefer "Sad Taylor" or "Angry Taylor" so "Happy Taylor" did not land as well. Also, this album dropped right before the beginning of the Pandemic, so the ensuing depression the entire world experienced did not connect well with the song. Those factors along with the lack of promotion of the album led to this being a lost gem album. * Me! is absolutely awful. I was so excited for a Brendan Urie feature and getting Me! as that collaboration was soooo disappointing. The music video is chefs kiss though. Folklore/Evermore: *** The Last Great American Dynasty is about the previous owner of her Rhode Ilsand Mansion. Rebekah Harkness. *** Folklore and Evermore are sister albums. Evermore is essentially a continuation of Evermore. Evermore is one of the lowest fan rated albums, but I know I personally love Evermore much more after the Eras tour performances of the album. Midnights- *** The everybody is a sexy baby line has a couple of meanings. For me I can see it literally if you look up a photo of Taylor with Sabrina Carpenter and Gayle at the AMAs. Taylor is 5'11" and with heels she physically and literally towers over most female celebrities making them in effect "sexy babies" in comparison. For figuratively, her celebrity status has reached such a massive level that she is giant monster who can't even go out in public without ruining everyone's time with the chaos that ensues. Look up what happened when she attended Jack Antonoff's wedding. * The Great War is a mash up with multiple meanings. It is about both her relationship while also referencing her grandfather and his experiences in WWII. She has a few songs that feel uncohesive and that is because she draws from multiple viewpoints and experiences that may not actually fit together. * High Infidelity is about her cheating on Calvin Harris which did actually happen. You can Google where was Taylor Swift on April 29th. I believe it was at the Met Gala where she met Joe Alwyn. *** You definitely were just burned out on Taylor Swift so I hope you revisit later after you recover 😂😂 - The Tortured Poets Department/The Anthology- *** Matty Healy and Taylor has a relationship back in her 1989 era but it wasn't widely publicized. They then continued to have a flirtationship for the next decade before reuniting after her relationship with Joe broke down. The relationship with Joe broke down because he would not or could not fully commit to her. Her song Lavender Haze was her denying to herself that commitment really mattered that much to her, and that as long as she could live with her lover that was all she needed. But after a lifetime of dreaming of the happily ever after of marriage, children and a big happy family it wasn't realistic and she was just in denial. After a 7 year relationship that consumed her entire life that started at her absolute lowest point in life breaking down due to lack of commitment and being him being unsure of what he wanted and only tolerating her love, Matty swooped in after a literal decade of pining for one another- him and her both dropping secret lyrics and songs about their flirtationship (think The 1 from Folklore, and also Guilty as Sin and Fresh Out the Slammer) and told her everything she wanted to hear. "At dinner you took my ring off my middle finger and put it on the one people put wedding rings on- and thats the closest I've come to my Heart exploding" "You said if the sex was half as good as the conversation pretty soon we would be pushing cradles." Then factor that in with the line about Joe, "I'm pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free." IE- the biological clock is ticking and she feels she is running out of time to have children as 35 is considered a mature pregnancy and raises the risk of miscarriage and infant mortality and birth defects. If you take the feelings the person is feeling in "Tolerate It" and "You're Losing Me" then come in saying I've loved you and waited for you for 10 years. Let's get married and have kids." That would definitely amplify the depth of feelings for that person. Rebound energy. Which is also referenced in "Fortnight" which mentioned "I took the miracle move on drug. The effects were temporary." Insinuating she now knows the relationship was just a rebound and not as serious as she had felt it was in the heat of that moment. "Matty Healy only Jesus can help you." Honestly I f*cking SNORTED when you said this. Now- I write this absolutely insane, unhinged, TLDR NOVEL of a comment to you as a lifelong Swiftie who grew up with Taylor. Literally- I am 34 and was the age that Taylor was when she wrote, recorded, and released these albums. I WAS 22 when she released 22. So I connect very deeply with her and her lyrics because we were experiencing a lot of the same things at the same time. Even the relationships and media coverage- I was INVESTED in the stories, photos, memes, award shows, ect ect as they were happening. Which is probably why I was crazy enough to leave this massive comment. But again, I respect the fact you took on this massive undertaking as a non fan. You invested hours and days into this listening, reaction, and reviews. I also appreciate you being able to throw away any preconceived notions and hipster bandwagon hate and being willing to give an actual constructive review. So thanks for that.

I'm so glad you're feeling better! That all sounds so hard Re Paradais "maybe I'm reading into it" : that is the whole point of reading, no? To read into a text based on your own experience? Also ig I'm reading Sylvia Plath next Re Crush: I'm so glad you liked it! It is such a beautiful collection, I wish he had another one! Alas. Also, re: reading poetry a couple years ago I heard the phrase "poems aren't riddles" which really unlocked what it needed to in my brain to change how I approach poetry. Poems don't contain, like, hidden messages or anything like that, like you don't need to approach poems with the mindset of Nicholas Cage figuring out some obscure history riddle-a poem is a moment, when the poet wrote it, meeting you in the moment you read it. Please take care of your health! ~ Monica (who sent Crush)

And now it’s risen again so people just have to relax lol and the other poem was about my late aunt’s voracious love for playing board games with me, us racing to devour them together! …anyways, no poetry book has ever instantly inspired me to write my own poem like that! so thank you McKenna and Joy! 💗💃

That sounds like a terrifying nightmare. I'm so sorry you had to go through that, and so happy you're feeling so much better 💚 I bought my first poetry book yesterday, Major Tales & Poems by Edgar Allan Poe 😊

It felt nightmarish! Not a fun time, I definitely wouldn't recommend it hahaha I love that so much! Edgar Allan Poe is very beloved in my family, my mom even has a tattoo based off one of his poems 💖
