I guess this would work. I don't know if I would want to try it on a high end instrument? I learned how to do it the traditional way. Teach an old dog new tricks? Moving wood (necks) with heat and clamps I have done before. I don't do guitar repair any more, but if it works good for you.

That's NOT what Ted Woodford said, and you sound like exactly the kind of FOOL Ted warned people NOT to be. You fool. Ted raises several valid concerns regarding several unclear aspects of Mr. Miner's presentations. He QUESTIONS them, and hopes Mr. Miner will clarify by way of a new video depicting the ENTIRE process, in detail, from start to finish. Note that Ted seems to have MISUNDERSTOOD the NUT-movement measurement as being the movement measurement at the SADDLE. That misunderstanding is the basis of Ted's major concern, and yes, Mr. Miner needs to be more clear about that measurement. I am three days into Mr. Miner's method right now. I built an excellent jig to hold the guitar in a way that doesn't stress its top or back. And this is my primary, go-to guitar, so my undertaking this steam-only method is a vote of confidence in Mr. Miner. Have you, @sainttom365, actually TRIED Mr. Miner's method? Of course you haven't. You're a pathetic HECKLER. It's so EASY to discredit others unfairly, isn't it? For the record, I have respect for Ted Woodford and for John Miner, so I don't mean to criticize either of them, BUT... it would be easy for Ted to TEST JOHN'S METHOD for himself. I assume John's method will work for me, and if that's true it'll be life-changing for Ted and others who are indeed earning good money doing the CURRENT method of Neck Resetting (and Ted sounded a bit defensive toward the end of his comments, so he sees the potential for a shakeup). Ted seems like a good, honest man, and as such, he acknowledges directly that Neck Resetting is a RELATIVELY NEW PROCESS, so new techniques will likely be developed by "thinkers outside the box." Thanks to John Miner down unda! =D Cross yer fingers that my favorite guitar comes through with flying colors a month from now...

You say steam till warm to very warm. You apply 20:to 30 seconds and say "might go for another minute". Using identical steamer for around 15 seconds I get heat damage to top surface ... No way I could steam for a full minute.

@josephzado2377 3 күн бұрын
If you're referring to a haze being created in the finish, it's actually moisture damage not heat. Heat is the solution to moisture spots. Yeah this method is very risky for the finish but honestly I'd rather have some haze and a strait neck than high action and a clear finish lol

I have no real experience in anything more than very simple guitar set up and maintenance (fitting a new nut etc.) so I was very wary of trying this method. I first tried it a couple of weeks ago on a 70's Harmony guitar that was basically unplayable. The results were amazing more or less as John says. Next was my old Suzuki and a cheap old Epiphone . I wonder how permanent these fixes will be ? I would assume that weakening the glues would have an effect over time but we will see, For now I have three characterful guitars restored to extreme playability for no money. For sure if I can do it most people can. If I ever return to Brisbane I will seek John out to thank him in person.

I would suggest not doing this. All this did to my $2500 guitar is bubble up the finish up by the neck joint back and sides about 6 inch spots where I was spraying the steam. I did this method about 6 times throughout 2 months. And then the last time I did it, I figured I must not be doing it for long enough, so steamed the neck joint for about 1 minute each side which just bubbled up the finish and now it's a junk guitar. And worst of all it didn't work

Are you clapping to the brace underneath the neck ? or to the body with the clamp on the sound hole ?
@darrencarillo7321

I have the same question in my head, looks like he just aligns the end of the square tubing with the end of the fret extension, and pushes the clamp in as deep as it can go. I know there's a wooden brace in the sound hole under the fret extension, but I'm not sure if pushing that clamp all the way in clears the brace and is up against the soundboard body, or if it is on the wooden brace. Have you tried it yourself and see where it pushes up against?

I've got an old Guild Madeira 5 string banjo that I have been trying to replace the 5th string friction tuner. I have tried everything I have seen on line and it won't budge. I'm afraid it will break the neck. Guess I will have to take it to a pro. I replaced the 4 main tuners no problem. They were frozen solid. All the new tuners are 5 Star tuners.

I'm 73 and have had but one job in my life, guitar repair. I can't say this won't work as I've never tried it, but I will. Yes a neck reset is $400 or more but doing it this way won't be free as you do need a way to steam the neck with very hot dry steam. I have a few old Yamaha guitars with dovetail necks that I'll try it on as soon as I have time between client work. I have an idea of what is happening here but need to do it myself to prove it.

I tried this on an old Yamaha FG 230 12 string. Steaming was particularly effective in removing he belly bulge and raising the bridge, which had sunk. However, the neck angle was good for a few weeks and then mostly returned to its original (bad) angle. Perhaps it's because these old FGs were actually finished with a light coat of something on the inside? Maybe that makes a difference. Unfortunately, I think it will need a proper reset.

I just want to say a couple of things about moisture.. too much will crack the finish.. .. Also some of you will find that some necks will be nice after your done but will go back to where they were . You have to remember that the upbow on that neck got there over years of constant tension being on it .. the cells in the wood were basically crushed over time .. yes . You can make it go back but it may not stay.. and some people will experience an underbow from this .. not a problem if you have a double acting truss rod .. but anmajor pain if you have a single acting truss rod. Also your problem coupd simply be caused by environment.. If you guitar spent most of its life in a high humidity area of the country and you now have it in a desert like area with no humidity all year except 10 or 30 % in summer .. the wood simply shrunk .. and you'll prettymuch have to do a reset ..

Could you do a neck reset on a 12 String Electric Rickenbacker John ?
@anthonyfoster1476

I have actually used a similar technique using heat and NO steam on two Spanish necks that had imploded into the sound hole with great success. I did have to reglue a brace and cleat the break. These guitars have subsequently been appraised at over 8K each. I have also used a steel bar that is also heated and clamped to straighten a bowed neck. I had not seen these videos. My only alternative would have been to change the guitars to bolt on necks by sawing them off, which would have greatly impacted their value. If they has had dovetail neck joints I would have gone the traditional route, but the next time I get a beater in with the problem I might try the steam solution.

I did similar on a yamaha fg 200 that was in bad need of a neck reset. I built a simple plywood jig with 3/4 plywood and 3/8" all thread where the body was samwiched betweem them and attached a unfinished oak 2x4 to put pressure on the neck which was braced with 2x2 square tubing, two clamps holding it to the neck and one holding it at the soundhole. I measured how much i needed the neck angle to come up to get the height above the bridge i wanted, and the starting measurement at the headstock recording both, stiuffed the lower body with rags. I used a stanley hand held steamer and steamed the neck block area inside umtil it was nice and hot to the touch on the outside. Once i stopped i covered the sound hole and applied some downward force to the neck, About once a week id do this until i had the measurement at the headstock pulled down double what i needed at the bridge. If i startedout needing to raise the neck angle projection 3mm so that it would hit just above the bridge, overtime i would keep applying steam and adjusting the pressure at the nut end of the neck until id moved it about twice my bridge measurement. So if i needed 3mm at the bridge, id move the nut end 6mm or so, id leave the clamps on and appplky steam once or twice a week for 3 or 4 weeks more and then restring it, worked good for me
