Hi Mark hope you're well. What a fascinating piece of history in in great condition for its age, a couple of questions, what voltage would it have run at, and if it could be powered up could it work as intended. Best wishes stay safe Jon

I think it was originally 24 volt plus eht to run the tubes and yes it looks very sound for something 80 years old and it would still work today with correct plugs. It came from a radio ham and has been looked after, cheers mark.

You could also make a super regenerativ receiver, that gives gain and selectivity that is a lot better.

Hey Mark. Me and my friends are doing a project for our final year of high school. We are in great need for an electron gun and we're working on a low budget. Since you mention you got yours for a relatively "cheap" price on ebay, do you have any tips on finding electronics, or in this case specifically an electron gun for an affordable price? We found a broken one that looks very similar to yours. The glass bulb is broken but we are unsure why the electron gun itself is not working. Is this something you are familiar with and would possibly be able to assist us with? Thank you Mark, keep up the good work! :)

Hello paid about 80 pounds for my example on ebay and the tube has minimal use and the high tension module that supply HT was about six pounds if you are interested in mine you are welcome to see it in operation and pay me what it owes me because I have a low attention span regards Mark frow swindon.

A broken bulb will mean that it has lost its high vacuum and no electons will flow. The tungsten filament which is operating at about 6 volts will emit electrons and these will be accelerated by about 5kv ht by the use of electrostatic focusing lenses within the tube to impact the fluresesant screen to cause the electron beam to be visable as a green dot. The electron beam that is flowing through the tube is negatively charged and is very easily bent by a magnet. I was lucky and a school was selling some old stock and the seller was unable to test the tube so I bought it at a fair price, it is most important that the filament is intact or the tube will be useless. Philip harris who still sell these tubes today ask about 500 pounds for them but if you are prepared to take a gamble on ebay can pay off- I could easily get my money back but you need to be very carefull with posting because the tube is evacuated to a high vacuum and will implode if broken so maybee the postman will crap himself or herself, a facinating item indeed.

My dad had some headphones like that. He filled them with canuba wax and smoothed it off so that there was about 10 thou between the iron diaphragm and the wax. He said that raised the resonant frequency to give better quality.

It would also be possible to make use of a triode, or almost any other valve, connected as a diode, so that the only voltage required would be the filament voltage. However, with a triode, it is possible to improve sensitivity and selectivity enormously by using regeneration. If you have an old battery valve, designed to operated on a HT voltage of 90 volts, it will, in fact, operate quite well right down to twelve volts, particularly when used as a regenerative detector.

That valve/tube looks in fantastic condition after so many years. Do low voltage valves/tubes suffer from less “Carbon build up” that I see on other old valves? I am sorry if the question is silly, but have never built anything with valves and have no experience of them. When we about 10 years old my sister and myself built a crystal radio following directions in the ladybird book that we manged to get hold of in République du Cameroun. We didn’t even understand the difference between NPN and PNP then, but just kept pulling transistors out of old junk until we found something that worked like the OC71 in the book. A year later we figured out using a 741 to increase the volume. Great content by the way. Have subscribed.

@ringfinder1962 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for your interest and I would say that battery valves do suffer less although you cannot usually see the filament glowing due to the low voltage and yes I also have the ladybird book on how to make a transistor radio with the old germanium mullard oc71 infact this radio will easily use one in place of the valve.

Didn't they also use a lump of coal as a point contact diode. Even easier to come by. The coil will have some self capacitance between the windings so with a certain number of turns you get resonance at a particular frequency (120 for Medium Wave). A simple tuner involves scraping away the shellac and running a piece of tin across the turns to effectively shorten or lengthen the coil.

OK! So you are using the valve as a diode? As for battery longevity, I just hauled out a pair of AAAs made by Philips expiring April 2003 from a digital pocket multimeter; no corrosion and they light up a 1.5V 0.3A pea-bulb perfectly!

I used one of those in Northern Ireland in the 1970’s (later iteration) but they are heavy when strapped to an SLR. So carrying that for 3-4 hours at a time is arm breaking.
