I really love Michael and will always have a soft spot for his relationship with Jane, but I don’t think that it makes sense to say that Rafael was a second choice or that the writers had to mess with Michael’s character to make Jane and Raf happen. It’s been clear since season 1 that Rafael and Jane would be endgame. The narrator has been alluding to that since the first episode of the show. But since it’s a telenovela, the main love story reconciles only at the end. Every twist happening in the middle of the story serves as plot device to keep the main protagonists as far as possible until the end. Jane choosing Michael over Rafael in season 2 WAS a plot device. That’s why the story ends with her having to choose again and this time she chooses Rafael. To prove that he has always been plan A. In one of Jane’s imaginations, Rafael says a line that sums it all pretty well “I might be a flawed hero, but I am yours”. Even though Michael seemed to be “perfect” for Jane, he just wasn’t the hero of her story. Rafael was.
