Flip the "6" piece. Upper crook of it goes over the front of the lever. There is supposed to be a spring to keep it rotated back, over the lever tip.

That guy should have his head examined. My grandfather gave me a 30-40 Krag in 1967 to use as my first deer rifle. It was all original with the military sights and everything. Me being a stupid 14 year old thought it would be a good idea to scope it so I paid a gunsmith to mount a scope on it. It worked out well for a few years and then I bought a Remington 760 and hunted with it while the 30-40 resided in the gun safe and only saw the light of day when I took it out to clean and oil it. Well, fast forward to 2021 when I auctioned off most of my rifle collection I expected the 30-40 to bring pretty good money. It was only one of two that I put a reserve on. Highest bidder was less than $500. I consulted a well respected gun shop and he said if it would have been an original specimen it would have been worth about three times the highest bidder but as is he was not surprised at the lack of bidding.

Don't know whether its possible to cause some type of damage to the trigger/sear by improper bolt removal and insertion but the correct procedure for removing is to close the bolt, pull the trigger to fire (which on a 52 causes no damage). Then WHILE pushing forward hard on the trigger unlock the bolt and withdraw it rearward. To replace the bolt start it in with the lug down at 6:00 and while holding the trigger back hard slide the bolt the rest of the way into the action. Takes some jiggling sometimes.

How can the bolt be so sloppy it hits the lip? Did you check the bolt to receiver clearance? And a 22-250 rem 700 is a rifle, not a weapon, nor is a 22-250 based on a 308 case.
@MastGunWorks2 ай бұрын
Again, based on what I was seeing from testing I have a strop suspicion the bolt nose recess was machined too small. I believe these are typically bored out to around .012”-.015”. It’s also been my experience that most factory rifles like this have “sloppy” bolts. Custom actions are usually a lot tighter on the bolt to bolt raceway fit.

How hard would it be if I bought a parts kit
@MastGunWorks2 ай бұрын
To build one?? I would say if you do your homework, and have the proper tools it shouldn’t be that hard. Most of these mil-surp rifles were meant to be mass assembled and field serviceable. Where you’ll run into issues is trying to put mil-surp parts in a commercially manufactured rifle. Which is what I ran into with this one

I honestly have no idea. I had offered to go further with the refinishing. Unfortunately we had already exceeded the value of the firearm. I got the impression this was more of a “don’t care how it looks, just make it work.” type of job.

Im currently about to begin cutting down a 28" barrel with bead sight down to 18.5..im goong to drill amd tap a new bead hole by finding dead center to the best pf my ability. My family owned a machine shop for 60 years until we sold it 7 years ago. This would be much easir with one of our 3 metal band saws or CNC machines. But have solme skills using calipers and micrometers and can use a center pinch pretty well. Im turnig a old deer 12 gauge into a home dwfese gun. This particular btand dowsnt have a piatol grip available but im going to cut the stock grip and sand and stain and maybe need to use some wood filler but im looing forward to the project. The only part that gives me pause os the stock ans forend are both in beautiful shape and have great original finish.but for hoke defense im a fan of a dark gun as its likely going go have 1 slug and 4 00 OUGHT buck in it.
@MastGunWorks3 ай бұрын
Sounds like a fun project. I can understand how you feel about the wood. I would just scrape the finish off and coat it with some furniture wax. Won’t be shinny then, but it’ll look nice. I don’t think going with flat black is going to gain you much. Thanks for sharing.

You're probably running the carding wheel too fast. Should be around 800rpm. Too fast and you can actually 'burn' through the bluing, even with the Brownells wheel.

So I'm a little confused. It looks like you chucked up the range rod in you chuck and you have the other end in the barrel which essentially cause it to in theory free float in the barrel bore.. Are you trying to show the amount of out of round by how much the inside touches the range rod as it spins the lathe head or lathe chuck around? Or am I missing that the chuck was turned in not touching the range rod and it just need to go through the chuck center for room so you back it off and the range rod is spinning as you turn the lathe.
@MastGunWorks4 ай бұрын
The range rod has a bushing on the end that snuggly fits the bore. It’ll pretty accurately show any deflection off center as I rotate the barrel around. That allows me to indicate off the bore more easily
@thereloaderscloset90964 ай бұрын
So do you think you could build a gun on one of the small PM 12x28VF large bore lathe's. I know its not much rigidity when comparing to a larger one but taking it slow and small cuts if you did everything by a lot less is it possible, Even chambering a barrel. I'm also talking about the hobbyist that wants to do it him self just for fun.
@MastGunWorks4 ай бұрын
Yes, it’s possible. I have a buddy who uses a lathe he got at Harbor Freight. You just have to learn to work within the limitations of your machine. I bet you could do some decent work with that PM machine.

@MastGunWorks4 ай бұрын
You might check the linkage connected to the hammer. There’s a piece called “the hand” that comes up and pushes the cylinder around. There may also be some excessive of the cogs on the cylinder. These guns are pretty simple. Not a ton of parts to deal with. Just gotta make sure everything is times well.

you do not really know much about working on carbines. To be totally accurate the barrel has to be installed in the receiver and indexed in correctly. You also have to use the bolt that is to be used with barrel and receiver. You also missed the the oprod spring is bad. In you video I can see where the slide is hitting the receiver. Also fyi the carbine runs on grease not oil. If it slides grease it, if it rotates oil it.
@MastGunWorks4 ай бұрын
You’re right, I don’t know a ton about these yet. The information I relayed in the video I received from CMP armory in Aniston Alabama where they specifically handle the carbine. I also consulted with other very experienced people I personally know and on KZfaq. I will definitely add your guidance to that list. Please try to be nicer next time. Your comments came across as quite rude. We’re all still learning here. Everything I did worked and the firearm functions appropriately. So how is that “wrong”

I have a similar problem with my savage 300WSM, the bolt is difficult to turn and difficult to extract the cartridge out of the chamber.
@MastGunWorks4 ай бұрын
With a Savage I would say you may need to aggressively clean the chamber. Especially up at chamber throat. You might have some carbon build up in there that’s catching your brass up. It may also be head spaced a little tight. Fortunately, for you savage owners, head space is really easy to adjust compared to a Remington.
