amazing video, love how the whole hiking trip has been so well visually documented. I'm planning to hike that part of Scotland in the Knoydart in October (hopefully it'll be overall not too wet and rainy, i know Scotland is always a bit tricky regarding that) probably in the other direction towárds Inverie and taking the boat out to the mainland (if it's still in operation by then)

Man, I can see every time you put your foot down how heavy your pack was. I remember doing the WHW years ago and being determined to camp because we had no money. Had a cheap tent with separate solid poles lol and my pack being super heavy. It was a struggle every day. I’m not saying you should spend silly money on some super light kit but there are shops and plenty of places along the walk to get food (albeit at inflated prices). Less is more is the watchword. Also it’s Salochy as in ‘Sal’ from ‘sally’ and Ochy as in ‘rocky’. Great video by the way. One of the best I’ve seen. Not too much admiring the view and more the reality of how tough it can be. Taking the high road was the best decision given your dodgy foot. The low road is the most challenging part of the walk as it’s relentless.

Did the highland way before becoming a hillwalker. You seem to like all the comforts of home, a fire, bottle of wine, a ton of food. Personally I would never carry wine, just enough water to drink till I camp which will be near a water source, dehydrated food. For 3 season use if doing the WHW, would bring the Hilleberg Anjan 2, nice and spacious, light, not bothered by wind or rain. An alternative to you pack would be a 2 wheel trailer with a belt that goes roundyour waist. If you decide to go hillwalking, making a fire won't go down well with farmers, or collecting wood such as branches for a fire.
@rorymchenry373
@rorymchenry373 29 күн бұрын
Hahaha yeah a trailer would be nice!! Honestly I’m not much better when I go hillwalking, I still like to carry a heavier pack if it means I’ve got some comforts to enjoy. And well controlled fires are permitted in Scotland as long as you a respectful of the land, keep them small and leave no trace. I personally think it makes a huge difference to sit by a fire at night after a long day hiking…

The West Highland Way is 100 miles long. That is basically the range of walking four marathons back to back. It is also combined with some very serious elevation and some fairly tricky paths. It is the best and the worst of hiking. I regularly camp at locations on the West Highland Way and it is hilarious to watch people do it. 99% of them cheat. Seriously .... nearly everyone cheats. I have sat there watching the portage services arrive and set up the tents prior to the walkers arriving. Then watched them backslap each other for their heroic performance in the heated communal through-hiker kitchen. Its literally a low grade version of Everest tourism. Congratz if you really did it mate.

Haha yeah I encountered a lot of other walkers doing it with luggage courier services - personally I have no issue with it, a lot of them were older and probably less able to carry 5 days worth of kit but wanted to experience the beautiful landscape anyway. And a nice way to do it! But there definitely is something special about setting off from Milngavie with everything you need to survive on your back and reaching Fort William having carried it all yourself. It is much harder than I anticipated but I would recommend it to anyone, however they want to do it!

If your stove has a preheater tube, invert the canister. The gas is liquid in the cold and inverting it feeds the liquid which the reheater turns to gas. Or take a petrol or alcohol stove. You arent exactly a lightweight walker. Take some lighter gear and you can th n carry more wine..😅 Edit,doesnt look like you have a preheater...

@@rorymchenry373 The price of gas has gone through the roof. I mostly use alcohol stoves. Have a look at the speedster system. Made in the UK. Very good. This was a fun video, though I think you are a little nuts. All good though. I would have been delighted to see you turn up in the middle of nowhere, a) you have wine, b) you know how to cook. (but please tell me you didn't throw the pasta water away before the meal was finished, that's what creates that glossy texture, (and eggs). But as you were in Scotland, smoked salmon would be a good substitute for anchovies). The highland ponies were really nice, people mistakenly always think of Shetlands when they think about Scottish ponies. The late Queen did a lot to promote the breed. Fantastic, thick set strong animals and the ones that would have been used by the clans historically. The bothies look great, I almost want to head North and stay in them. But then I remember that I actually don't like living without central heating. But watching your videos one can dream that one is a different person to what one has learnt they are. You do make it look attractive even when you are struggling. I live in the South like you, (though further South), it's strange to think that we are connected to this "land of ice and snow", and then you can jump on a train back to London. Must be hard to adjust to the contrast? More videos please.
@rorymchenry373
@rorymchenry373 2 ай бұрын
Thankyou! Don’t worry, the pasta water went into the dish! Most people tend to just take dehydrated prepackaged camping meals on multi day treks but I just love cooking, especially in the great outdoors and so am happy to carry the extra weight of ingredients (though I know I’m in the minority on this!) Bothers are a fantastic way to experience the Highlands. They offer great shelter and also a wonderful place to meet like minded people and share some stories and a drink or two. I think everyone is capable of getting out into nature, even if we are conditioned to think we need home comforts. Even for one night out, we can endure some uncomfortable conditions but the reward is being out in a beautiful landscape. I highly recommend it if you get the chance!
