My Dad who is 87 was losing his cognition. His memory was getting worse, and his train of thought wasn’t complete, with fragmented sentences which included irrelevant items. His ability to write his name on paper was not possible, when asked he would write a few lines which looked like chicken scratches. I got him started on a 18:6 intermittent fast, two meals a day. Breakfast at noon, and dinner at 6pm. Low carb diet (no bread, no potatoes, no pasta, no rice). It was a bit hard to convince my Mom who is also 87 and does all the cooking to keep this strict diet. One teaspoon of MCT oil and one teaspoon of coconut oil in the morning with coffee (now only taking MCT oil with coffee). Bacon, eggs, avocado and a bit of fruit in the morning. Monitored his blood sugar with CGM, and also measured his ketone levels with CKM and acetone breath meter. Remarkably, within one week his cognition started getting better. In a couple of weeks he could write and sign his name on paper with very high quality. Could draw an analog clock with correct hour and minute hands. He’s back to being able to log into his computer on his own, remembering his password and navigating windows to call me on Skype. Remarkable pivot in his cognition. This wasn't a clinical trial, but rather an N=1 experiment which worked for us. Reading the comments, there are others so there is something here. My N=1 experiment was sparked by this podcast. Thank you Dr. Mary Newport for continuing to talk about your experimenting with your husband and Metabolic Mind for this KZfaq channel.

Too diplomatic. Time to call the sugar nuts what they are. Also, it's time to recognize that keto works but often carnivore works even better.

They all have strong support networks, managed to have relationships, careers n young enough to still have families. What hope is possible for those whose lives are isolated from devastating consequences, is it only to live med free? No careers for those over 50, or possibly to become mom or dad, even if they get better through a ketogenic lifestyle. How did they afford their care, rent etc? How do you help those at the bottom who have to use social programs that are restricted by government regulations?

I'm not a so called "doctor" but any critical thinker would know this is true! When I worked in the prison as a LCSW on OPMH I developed a psychoeducation class teaching pts about their brains and the role nutrtion/hormonal/endocrine system plays in mental health ... one of the text books I used was Biological Psychology: An Introduction to Behavioral, Cognitive, and Clinical Neuroscience by S. Marc Breedlove (Author), Mark R. Rosenzweig (Author) and at that time I was using their 6th edition from 2010. One only had to work with medicated ppl a short time to know it was not the road to wellness... and actually descreased their quality of life after awhile.

Great interview and fantastic to hear about this important and much needed research! Another step in the right direction for mental health. On another note, I just saw an interesting presentation by Dr. Richard Johnson. He presented research showing that many people with bipolar have been found to have very high fructose levels in the brain and the higher fructose levels correlated with hospitalisation rates. The pathway that fructose takes in the body suppresses the production of ATP in the mitochondria, also via inter-cerebral fructose production. While this is obviously meant to be a good thing -a survival mechanism, in today’s food environment it can have negative physical and mental health consequences. I found this fascinating as it gives another possible explanation as to why keto benefits many people with bipolar. Fructose and sugar intake (the body can convert sugar into fructose) is minimal, or excluded, on a ketogenic diet.

It all speaks to me. For a few months, I've been going down on olanzapine super slowly while on keto and yes, the psychiatrist told me it's the illness returning when I was experiencing very concerning symptoms and I really freaked out but Nicole Laurent gave me hope and said we may never know why I experienced some really strong suicidality and some intense insomnia for a bit of time while on keto and tapering. The symptoms did pass and I continue to go down slowly without them returning so I am confident in keto, esp over time. My improvement is slow and winding but worth it. Still no psychosis or mania.

When i went on the carnivore diet, my LDL went from around 80-90 to 466. I'm 5'9 and 140 pounds, my triglycerides are below 50, high HLD and I'm very insulin sensitive..However..I've never put on muscle like this in my whole life, ive never felt so good, FINALLY pain free/ lowered my chronic pain. Everything was better on that diet, my depression, anxiety, sleep, brain fog..even when i switched to keto, things weren't as amazing, but still better than the doctor recommend diet..doctors dont make money when im sick, and i hate to say this, but id rather live a shorter happier life, than live to be 90 and be in pain every damn day. Its hard for people who've never been in chronic pain to get that.

Here's a ChatGPT summary: - A lived experience panel was hosted at the Society of Biological Psychiatry (SOBP) conference in Austin, Texas. - The panel was introduced by Dr. Julie Milder and led by Jan Ellison Bazooki. - The panel included Hannah, Lauren, and Wes, who shared their personal journeys with mental illness and ketogenic therapy. - Lauren Kennedy West has a BA in social development studies and an honors bachelor of social work. She runs a KZfaq channel called Living Well with Schizophrenia. - Wesley Braden is a senior marketing manager at Fertile Health with a bachelor's degree in business managerial economics. - Hannah Warren works at Metabolik Mind and Bazooki Group as a mental health communications and advocacy manager. - Hannah shared her journey with bipolar disorder, including her first psychotic break at age 28, and how ketogenic therapy has been transformative for her. - Lauren discussed her experience with schizophrenia, her struggles with traditional treatments, and how ketogenic therapy has significantly improved her mental health. - Wes shared his experience with OCD and bipolar disorder, and how ketogenic therapy has provided him with a new sense of hope and agency. - The panelists emphasized the importance of integrating lived experiences into research and the potential of ketogenic therapy as a powerful intervention for mental health. - Main message: Ketogenic therapy has shown significant promise in improving the lives of individuals with mental disorders, offering hope and new avenues for treatment beyond traditional medications. (it probably butchered the spelling of a few names)

Great to hear more talks in regarding mental illness. When I started the ketogenic way of living almost six years ago and having multiple benefits. My ketone levels have come way down from when I had started. Getting very mixed messages on how high my ketone levels need to be for clinical benefits.

That is a great question, and it is something that may change over time. We know some people's ketone levels can decrease over time. We wonder if that means someone "needs" less to have the same effect. Hopefully, we can learn more with ongoing research and growing clinical experience.

Oxidized ldl's creates plaque. Oxidized ldl's gets created by inflammation. Inflammation is mainly a component of metabolic disease + the amount of lipoprotein(a) your liver makes(which is genetic determined). So, in short, if your a metabolic healthy person and is genetically blessed with a very low level of lipoprotein(a)....the inflammation in your body will be very low and the amount of ldl's that will oxidize, will accordingly also be very low. This person could get away with elevated ldl's for a long time. Actually, latest research is showing, having very low lp(a) levels, will dramatically lower oxidation of ldl's just by itself. Your welcome! 😉
