The knot you tied needs a different name. A real trucker's hitch (or wagoner's hitch) does not have a slip knot in it. It has a half sheep shank. You tied a modified trucker's hitch which adds impractical complications for someone who ties a lot of these knots in a day. The beauty of the knot with the half sheep shank is that it falls apart when tension is released. Your knot requires untying the slipped half hitch over the loop, then untying the auto-lock part of the knot, then pulling the entire rest of the line back through the slip knot loop, and finally the slip knot needs to be untied. Truckers don't have time to tie and untie all those knots. Also if you really need a trucker's hitch for hundreds of pounds of tension, the slip knot will not come apart as easily as you showed.
@Thehowtochannelinc3 күн бұрын
There are several variations of this knot. I find this auto locking version very convenient and easy to tie. I can also see the advantages to the half sheepshank version, especially if you are a trucker using it for very heavy loads and need the knot to come apart very quickly. Thanks for the comment.

I’m with you on that. A truckers knot can be released with one easy action. That knot can be difficult to undo.

OK but if want the loop to be tight around the handle (or say, around a tree), when and how do I pull it tight? I tried making a loose bowline loop but then I couldn't make the loop any smaller
@ThehowtochannelincАй бұрын
The Bowline isn't designed to be an adjustable knot, but you can tie a small Bowline in your rope and then run the rope around the tree and thread the other end of the rope through your Bowline and pull it tight.
@f7ckwit869Ай бұрын
You can also loop it through the handle then create a bowline that loops over the rope leading under the handle. That way you can pull the bowline tight around the handle.

Great video - would you reccomend this for smaller line as well? Trying to tie 6lb fluro to 8lb braid and not overlapping the wraps is tough for me
@ThehowtochannelincАй бұрын
Yes, it will work with a lighter line, but it is more difficult to tie if you dont have a lot of practice. Try pinching your loop down so it becomes fairly narrow and spacing out your wraps a little bit. They will come together as you tighten the knot. Just be sure you do at least 12 wraps and really pull hard on all 4 lines before dropping the tag ends. Thanks for the comment.
@xwavestrАй бұрын
@@Thehowtochannelinc thanks! I managed to get comfortable with it - it helped having the main line pinched down by something (literally was taping it to knee on the riverbank lol) so it can't flip over and the tension stays more consistently on the wraps. Caught a small walleye with it :)

Great video. Question: how long of a flourcarbon leader should you have? I was thinking not quite the length of rod so that when you cast, or retrieve, the knot does not enter the first eye of rod. Thoughts?
@ThehowtochannelincАй бұрын
It really depends on the type of fishing you're doing, but if you can keep your fluorocarbon leader from going through your rod guides, your knot will last longer due to less abrasion. Leader length can vary from 12 inches to 20 ft depending on the situation. I prefer a 3 ft leader most of the time. Thanks for the question.

When there is a large difference in the diameter of the lines being used It it is important to pull extremely tight on all four lines before dropping the tag ends.

I have never had that issue, but I don't use Fireline. I did a quick search online and found a few forum posts talking about Fireline breaking at the knot as you described. It may have something to do with the line. I would try a few more wraps and wetting the line before cinching it down. Let me know if that helps. If anyone else has had this issue, please comment.

The knot doesn't slip so if you were rescuing someone (pulling them up a cliff or out of a river or . . . . ) if THEY had the present of mind to utilize a bowline around their body, their weight would not cause the knot to slip and cinch into them as they were being hoisted. Another use that I can think of is if you're setting up a ridge line, you could use a bowline around a tree and put a toggle on that end that would provide you a quick release of that ridge line if you needed to move out quickly. (The other end of the ridge line could be a trucker's hitch.) If anyone else has other ideas or better ideas, I'd sure like to know. EDITED because I just remember "Corporals Corner" did a video called "How To Tie The Rescue Bowline - The Most Versatile Knot In The World". Credit where credit's due. This might save your life one day. Once you learn it, teach your wife . . children . . whomever. (When you're practicing, get yourself a rope. Don't try to learn with cordage.)
