The Packers did not have many highlights in 1958. They were 1-10-1 and surrendered about twice as many points as they scored.

Ah our Lions being bad as usual but at least they seem good in the Dan Campbell era. Hopefully it all pays off one day in a big way

Not too many players like Russ Washington (9:31-9:34), apparently drafted and played defensive line for two seasons, then was moved to the offensive line in 1970 and became a 5-time Pro Bowl selection and eventual Charger Hall of Famer.

Yeah, injuries and poor defense killed them, as they had the year before. The Saints offense ran all over them.

Man o man. Those Giants were loaded. Connerly, Gifford, King, Triplett, Webster, Morrison, Snelker, Kyle Rote. And the defense of Sam Huff, Svare, Robustelli, Katcavage, Modeslewski, Grier, Livingston, Patton, Crow. The Colts had a team fir the ages, otherwise the Giants would've been victorious.

Lots of talent on this Steelers team: three HOFers (Ernie Stautner, Jack Butler, and Jim Finks), Elbie Nickel (3x PronBowler and greatest TE in team history), Ray Matthews (2x Pro Bowler), Lynn Chandnois (2x Pro Bowler), Bill Walsh (2x Pro Bowl and 1x All-Pro), Dale Dodrill (4x Pro Bowl and 1x All-Pro), Paul Cameron (2x Pro Bowler), George Hughes (2x Pro Bowler), Bill McPeak (3x Pro Bowler), and John Lattner (Heisman winner and Pro Bowl in only NFL season).

I've seen posts that say this was written by Charles Chaplin, the actor - not so. Charles Chaplin was a newspaper man who worked for the NY Giants in the 30s, was part owner of the Detroit Lions in 1940, and did the PR for the Dons

This awesome. Thank you John. I didn’t realize the aerial attack in that era was so precise. No displays of narcissism that runs rampant in today’s NFL.

I quit watching it in the 3rd quarter. That college head coach was worthless! 4th & inches, in a meaningless game with nothing to lose, and he punts! 3rd & 18 and he calls a run play! 🙄

I'm an old guy. I love this brand of football. Fun fact: Packers faced the only three teams with designs on their helmets in back to-back-to-back weeks. Rams, Colts, Eagles. Pretty sure '54 was the first season the Eagles donned the iconic silver wings. Rams had the horns since '48. Colts added the smaller horseshoes on the back of the helmets sometime between '48 and '54.

@6:00-04, this brand of football (of the play is not over until the player with the football is completely motionless) allowed to let the play @6:00-04 resume and for Blanda to throw and allow a Green Bay defender to collect an INT. @7:45-47, this brand of football meant that the ball carrier being out-of-bounds was a very relative term, even if the ball carrier was QB Blanda. @15:19-31, this brand of football was why Tobin Rote eventually became Green Bay's all-time average yardage gained per rush leader! @17:09-11, this brand of football sometimes said that the play is not over even if the ball carrier is motionless. @29:01-03, again this brand of football's idea of a ball carrier being out-of-bounds as a very relative term. @37:44-45, this brand of football means a man's neck is meant to bend in whatever way it happens to bend. @43:10, this brand of football meant that facemasks were a great target for grab-&-reach tackling. @47:57, this brand of football meant that there is no such thing as a QB making a business decision with the football in his hands and the sidelines so close. @48:10-20, this brand of football had a Hall of Fame Defensive End showing his ability as an open field runner. @42:23, 49er LB#33 Hardy Brown with HIS OWN brand of football. @10:45, it's inconclusive if that same 49er LB#33 Hardy Brown got any piece of the Green Bay ball carrier (though I wouldn't put it past Hardy to have impacted the end of that play). @30:59-31:03, Colt DB#44 Bert Rechichar's brand of football was unphased by attempted straight-arms thrown his way.

The real grass field looks very forgiving, the players seem to bounce and slide so much more than today. 2:05 the post-tackle knee twister and 3:20 the post-touchdown push into the dirt. I think they frown on that these days...

1956 marked the Packers final season in the original City Stadium, the team's home since 1925. It was considered outdated by league standards. The league was talking about taking the NFL away from Green Bay unless the town build a new home for the team. In 1957, the Packers opened the New City Stadium (long since renamed Lambeau Field).

@plntntvzn
@plntntvzn Ай бұрын
Back then perhaps that was impressive, considering even the legendary Blanda was otherwise 6 for 19 in FGs in 1953. We know Blanda's FG kicking would eventually improve over the next decades, perhaps FG kicking was in general underdeveloped in 1953, I promise the punting was underdeveloped, 5-second hang time on punts, if that long.

Real football you say, if you call having no more than 4 or 5 black players on your team a unspoken rule by those great owners at the time Rooney Mara Halas and of course the Washington owner, the only owner who doesn't go along with it is Carroll Rosenblum Colts owner we had Lenny Moore Lenny Lyles Jim Parker Sherman Plunkett Milt Davis Johnny Sample Big Daddy Lipscomb and a few more which was great being you had 33 players and 7 on the taxi squad so our team was a 3rd black and of course we won 🏆 back too back championships in 58 and 59 put the NFL on the map new league in 1960 AFL anand
