Just a few miles south of where I live was where the Missouri Chest Hospital was. There is an old cemetery there that is where so many who died were buried. It isn't up close to the buildings but is in a field that was probably nearly half a mile away. Most of the stones are just flat, and many have only the name and date of death. Some do have a dob or the age at death. There are many young people buried there. That was such a horrible disease. When I was researching my family, I found a relative who died in that old hospital, but she was buried back home with her family in northern Missouri. Years later, that hospital was purchased by the VA and used up until about 5 years ago. Now, it and all the old outbuildings surrounding it stand dark and silent. Thank you for telling this young girls story. She died terribly young. ❤

That's a very pretty old stone. I'm guessing that she may have moved sometime after his death, and that's why his grave is not by hers? Either that or her funds only allowed the purchase of one grave plot and one stone when he died. If she eventually lived with one of her children, then they had her buried in their local cemetery. Just putting my thoughts into words, lol!

Beginning with the colonial militia in Virginia in the 1630's through the Revolution. During the War Between the Staes, my ancestors were Confederate. Serving under Gen. Thomas Jackson and Jeb Stuart. My grandfather's brother died as part of Pershing's Punitive Expedition in Mexico in 1916. Closer to my generation my people were in WW2, Korea, and me Vietnam. I need to do some looking thru newspapers for Tompkins County for my dad's 2nd wife. My mom, his 3rd wife, said that she committed suicide. If this is a fact, I would think there might be something in the local paper. At the very least, I hope to find her obituary. This would have been in 1946, if my memory is correct. I'm glad you mentioned newspapers because I had forgotten that I needed to do some research there.

Thank you so much for honoring this veteran by cleaning his headstone. And, on the day that we set aside to honor and remember those who served and often died while protecting our country. I'm guessing he was injured in the 1st World War. I wonder what happened to him that left him with a 40% disability. My late husband was in the Navy and had a 30% disability from asbestos exposure. He worked in the engine room on his ship. He developed COPD, but it took nearly 50 years. The plaques from the asbestos were clearly visible on his chest x-rays. I hope you had a blessed day and again, thank you!❤🤍💙
