2 to 2 1/2 years for black belt seems kind of short. At my dojo, it takes around 5-8 years to reach black belt with continuous training.

Hello; without disrespect; I do not see any different approach in training. What I see is that you are big and now older as all the big persons; even more bigger so you have the kg advantage and of course in a one point kumite; the longer distance regarding an smaller guy. I have this realistic point of view because I am the smaller normally (I am old and now new generations are all tall somehow) O can have the guts to "enter" the other guy area but very difficult (as we see mostly) to do the impact or point before the big guy counter attack. Hence smaller persons need a second punch or hit to land the technique. Whatever what you guys have to say I only see big or tall guys dominating the ippon kumite

Before society turned....and went wokey tokey! See how the TV wanted people to grow and overcome their weaknesses. Then ask yourself what happened!? As a kid this would have had me in the dojo in a heartbeat! Now!? Alot of it was old JKA propaganda but it was good and healthy propaganda!

I remember watching this years ago, being inspired, it really captured the times. I also remember training with one of the karateka featured in the film - we were partners at a Kanazawa seminar in Florida and Kanazawa sensei asked us to demonstrate his ippon kumite techniques for the class. I did them first, then Kanazawa asked (I believe his name was Ivan) to do them but on the opposite side, that we had not practiced. Ivan quietly said to me, as we faced each other in yoi,..."bummer" as he proceeded to do the techniques on the left. What a great time, great memories, great karate.

Thank you so much managers, specifically for your management style, Michelle. I try to emulate your considerate nature continually and try to refrain from excess, to practice moderation continually, thank you for being concerned and not apathetic when I was smoking pot (marijuana), for caring about my future

In February 1982, during a holiday in Johannesburg, I had the honor and fortune of being hosted at Stan Schmidt Sensei's gym. I remember the wonderful experience of that training, at the time I was a lad 2th Dan Shotokan, I was introduced to Sensei by Carlo Guidozzi who was his student. Thank you Sensei Schmidt wherever you are. OSS!!

Make any contact now in a Dojo and you get penalised. I've seen this difference since I started in the 80s, until now. It seems like this new Generation (z) are like Cry Babies. I use to come back with all sorts of bruises. May be it's the Insurence purposes now? I think it should go back to the Traditional way.

I have just seen this. I am long gone from the world of karate, but Sensei Stan was a big part of my life in the 60's and i remember him as such, as well as being a big inspiration and having a big influence on my life. I was still in touch with him and remember him with great warmth and fondness.

This is a great video for point fighting, but outside of the Dojo you're better off learning Boxing or MMA. Karate is a beautiful fighting style but it takes a very long time to use it in any real confrontation. Boxing is more efficient and easier to pick up and will get you in amazing shape. Wrestling is also very effective too.
