I actually prefer the rainy season. The sun isn’t as intense; prices are better; it isn’t as crowded and there are fewer tourist. I enjoyed outdoor activities until about midday and then enjoy relaxing sleep with the overnight rains. I was there for a week in June, and it only rained consistently during the day one afternoon. We were able to enjoy an Uvita Adventure Day, bike ride, Uvita shopping and Farmer’s Market Visit!!

Hola Señor Ed. You’re absolutely right about the so called “rainy season”. It doesn’t rain all day as some weather app will show you. 🙄 The first year in Uvita in 2022 the rain totals were higher than the 10 year average. Last year (2023) they were significantly lower to the point of causing issues with the Hydro Generating Plants and water shortages especially in the Guanacaste region. This year (2024) seems quite normal, and there are days in a row that it doesn’t rain at all. Most mornings are sunny and warm and the evenings are much cooler (18-20’c) than say in Dec-April, which I like. I also collect rain water for some of my house plants this time of year, it’s much better for them. I’ve notice the birds are much more plump around this time of year with all the fruits and nuts they’re able to access. As for the bird feather, my guess is it’s from a Vulture. 🦃

Rainy season has it's pros and cons. For a wildlife enthusiast like me, a nice rainfall awakens all the frogs, beetles, birds etc. But driving from A to B can be a tricky thing. I think, the best time are the "transition seasons". And it's quite amazing, that the Caribbean Coast has it's own kind of weather. You can be pretty sure to receive a downpour every night. About the feather, we are not sure here: could be that of a toucan or a parrot?

Life isn’t the same as a vacation..... Life is experiences all of them aren’t pleasant or extreme . But as always, our perspective is always the secret sauce . Gabriel, maybe needs to shake the sauce and pour more on. Also, I thought folks went to CR for less expensive dental work. And in closing a question for you , where in the US did you move from? Asking to see if I need to adjust my perspective.

Exactly. Dental work here is less expensive than the US and great quality, but that does not mean it’s cheap. I came from upstate NY. Check out this playlist of videos before I came here. kzfaq.info/sun/PLx7Vt6Ib8TVx_ACxIUX5gmOMtgW_y1dsx&si=aOB6YI29h08FfDxa

Waze is better here, more people use it, so the interaction is better , the users here are very enthusiastic about reporting any slight traffic issues so you are likely to be notified of police, construction, stopped car on shoulder etc. It also does a good job of recalculating your route to avoid construction. It is good but not perfect. You can also use google if you have your heart set on it , i know people here that prefer google maps. I find Waze the better option💯 YMMV

If visiting is it better to have us cash or exchanging for colonies
@CostaRicaStory
@CostaRicaStory 2 күн бұрын
Most tourist areas have no problem taking US dollars. That being said, you may not get a great exchange rate that way. What i do is use my Charles schwab investor checking account(no I don’t have any investments😅) that gives you an international fee free debit card that will give you a good rate of exchange at the atms . Then you can get colones. If you do use us dollars make sure they are in good condition, here they wont accept dollars with tears or other slight physical damage. You can also use a credit card in some places, but check to make sure the card does not charge atm fees or international fees

Ed, thank you for your video. You are correct about Uvita. I am the friend of Sheila, and I loved Uvita. Yes, it’s the rainy season,but it rains just late evening and sometimes early morning. It is not a constant rain. I throughly enjoyed my time in Uvita. I plan to return later this year and possibly move there. My only challenge is, I need to learn Spanish. I believe that it is respectful to learn and immerse in the culture for which you are visiting and possibly living. Ed, keep doing what you’re doing, I enjoy your videos. Hausta luego!

I think you are just really honest! I've had a canadian friend who tried hard to make a living here but ended up killing himself. And from him I know of a few others who just thought yay costa rica is gonna bee so fun and then struggle with the mentality. You can't expect to move to some strange country and live your old life. You have to adapt to the culture and how life is going there. You need to be open to new cultures! Some people are not, unfortunately!

This subject is something I consider daily. I've been based here for many many years now. I really fell in love with the country and felt good to be here. Much has changed over the years including my own awareness of issues here. Wealth imbalance effects the whole planet but particularly here due to the extremely low wages and lack of increase in minimum wage. The reality being I don't think many places on earth you can support yourself well on minimum wage. This has issue has really grown over the last few years, covid changed so much globally and in Costa Rica many people came causing rental shortages and huge rise in rents. Many of my costarican friends felt they could no longer find an affordable home where they live or even where they grew up. I actually felt similar and during the peak I had to move many times due to it. I will say global cost of living has sky rocketed. In the UK utilities quadrupled in two years. Similar story with food and mortgages etc, many of my friends are struggling to survive there. It's a global issue that is definitely multiplied here due to so many foriegn people moving here and buying land. But it is not exclusive to Costa Rica. The larger costs here include cars etc which is due to almost 100% of the value being added with tax and cost of upkeep on jungle roads. I am in a confusing situation as I finally came to a position of being able to build here and now I have I'm not sure it was the right move. I see the impact of so much development and how it's effecting costa ricans. In fact I feel to sell and perhaps even leave the country. But in doing so I add to the gentrification issue, buying land building then selling it is really a big part of the problem. So what to do. Stay feeling unsure to be here or sell and be part of that issue. I've lived many places here over the years including places with few foriegn people. Now I miss speaking Spanish daily and being part of it all. I see the impact of what is happening but like you I don't see a simple solution.

Yes, the "Covid Migration" really seems to have accelerated something that was already in motion. I have no illusion about my own role in this all which was my inspiration for this video. I love this country and the people here and consider this home now. At the same time, one of the thingsI do here is to help people move here and find homes here, I introduce people to the area and even work with realtors and property managers. I also know both Tico and Gringo property owners that have asked me to help them market their properties because of my KZfaq channel. The conclusion I came to for myself after talking with my Costa Rican friends here and looking at it pragmatically was that the changes are going to happen here and I can just do what I can do to add positively to the situation. But the Paradox is there always.
