I can really see how this song informs and embodies much of the early Simpson’s writing.

Though they’re no longer shoveling coal(RIP coal burning on the D&S), we still see her coming up from Durango, and we still see the smoke and hear the whistle blow. Here Comes The Silverton!!

As a fan of both cars and trains, it pains me. The automobile killed the New York Central. While diesels killed off steam, the fact that the central was operating mostly in the Eastern US, it was developed more than out west so short trips or cargo hauls could be done cheaper by cars, trucks and buses. And unfortunately there's not much left of the Central. Wish there was a replica J3 being made.

Im a Northern Pacific/Milwaukee Road fan, but Ill always have a spot for the NYC in my heart.
We can now all officially say that the first locomotive seen in this video powered the last coal-powered train on the Durango and Silverton. A very sad day. No more is the Silverton “A-Shoveling Coal”.
