Progress was very slow for me, there's so much to experiment with in terms of mediums and technique until you find a process that you love. It's also important to know that most artists will face rejection countless times whether it's from galleries or whatever, but not to let that hinder your creativity, progress, or sense of self worth. The reason for rejection isn't necessarily contingent on the quality of your work, it might just be that the subject matter doesn't resonate with a gallery or something trivial. I heard from Tim Packer, a Canadian artist, that there are art festivals/events that you can pay a few grand to go to and if the public loves your art and you have a reasonable supply, you could make 10-20k in a weekend, possibly even a sell-out show. Obviously the art would have to be "very good" and you could gauge this by reactions at smaller events before investing in a bigger art show/festival. It would be daunting to do one of those art festivals as an introvert, have you ever considered doing something like that? That's something I'm personally working towards.

Your paintings are not bad but it is visible that you are not yet very developed as an individual. Your paintings will mature as you work on yourself. You need to dig a little deeper. It’s not about composing a pretty image. It’s also visible that you’re changing stiles a lot from one painting to the other and that’s also a sign that you’re in need of trying different things because you didn’t find your lane visually-conceptually. A.k.a. you’re not mature yet. I even notice the way you talk in the video, even if you have a beard you give a feeling you were a toddler just yesterday. You still want the milk of your mother brest. Abstract but true. No offence. It is visible to me. My last point now. I agree with your art world sociological observation. And I would like to add my observation to that. The status quo are using gender identity and so on to shape society in a certain way and are pushing and instrumentalizing young naive folks with fake idealistic woke ideologies that are actually stabbing from the back the minorities themselves. More and more LGBT people have enough of this but they can’t do anything about it. Because the status quo is controlling everything and is grabbing by the balls and using those LGBT people who are selling out the whole community. Let’s keep painting still a pure discipline and let’s leave this nonsense to mixed media mambo jambo circus artists. Thanks!

Ahh - thank you for mentioning the problem of over complicated language when discussing art. I have just been reading a book about Edward Hopper, only to find myself reading the same line 3 times in order to try and understand what is actually being said. Just get to the point; in simple English and then we can all have a better understanding.

Thank you for your reply. How right you are about Hopper. I’ve purchased the fabulous Ways of Drawing (one of your Favourite Books for Artists). And, whilst I haven’t yet read it from cover to cover, I did see Hopper mentioned by Mark Cazalet - he is ‘moved by the alienation of Edward Hopper’s lonely New Yorkers’. No complex waffle there. Bonnard’s colour - you are spot on. Saw a visually beautiful exhibition at the NGV (I’m from Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺) last year. He certainly was not afraid to investigate colour. Thanks again for your wonderful videos.

I always wanted to opt for arts degree but i was terrified about tye financial aspects. Somehow, my parents kinda got in my head, i am straight A student and got into a good university to study nursing maybe. Not even 2months have been barely passed, the depression hit ke really bad. I cried so much not liking my course even a slightest bit. Im thinking to drop out finally
@TomasFolanHasici4 ай бұрын
It makes sense to be scared about finances, it's the biggest stress coming out of a degree in the arts. I do think it makes sense to do something more practical for a degree (unless the arts in your area actually give you an education that's worth it). I also don't think you should do something that makes you miserable (I also dropped out of healthcare), but on the other hand the stress of having an arts degree with no direction is another issue 😆 In an ideal world I'd go back and look at practical degrees that had creative elements and do that instead of Fine Art.
@A936402 ай бұрын
If you think you’re stressed now, imagine being a broke artist for the rest of your life and can’t afford food for your family let alone your self. Imagine living paycheck to paycheck debating if you should buy food or pay your light bill and you only have enough money for one. Imagine your child getting horribly sick and you don’t have the money to care for them. Yeah, that’s what your parents are trying to save you from. Unless mommy and daddy have a copious amount of money set aside for you when they pass away, then it isn’t for you. Inb4 someone says “u can technically make 10 million a year with an art degree if all the moon and stars align.” Okay? Don’t go with what’s possible, go with what’s probable. Your parents don’t want you to struggle in life like they did. You’re in for a rude awakening when you get out of school and hit real life.
@CollyWobbles._32 ай бұрын
@@A93640 there is no being "broke artist " For the rest of your life, if it's going to take time making profit out of your art, you can also go study any other degree which will ensure you a job(online or offline), and get a job. Sure, there will be some hurdles to pass through but you won't fail. But I don't want to opt for an art degree lol. I'll study art separately and take a good degree, probably in the business sector. And lastly, I understand that there are people who's lives are way way way horrible than mine, I am grateful to have my life. What I want to say is that, that fact still doesn't take away my pain away from me. My life is in my own hands and I want to enhance it beautifully. Stress is inevitable

@TomasFolanHasici5 ай бұрын
If you're looking for an actual education, you won't learn much at all. If you need an MA qualification for progressing in your career then it could be worth it. Just from a fine art perspective, the course won't teach you how to be a successful artist or even how to paint or draw.

@@TomasFolanHasici thanks. In what way was your experience with the Royal Drawing School different?
@TomasFolanHasici4 ай бұрын
Everything about the school is incredibly practical and is based around drawing. The tutors are varied and fantastic, if you find a couple that you really click with they really help you completely transform your practice for the better. There's also a more disciplined culture there than what I've found in my own experience of the mainstream Fine Art courses.

I am doing an online visual communication degree with the Open College of Arts which now became affiliated with the Open university and I totally agree with your point that UK schools don’t teach you any practical skills whatsoever and apparently from what you say it doesn’t matter much if it’s online or brick and mortar! I am only encouraged by my tutors to “experiment more” but pretty much everything I learned in terms of technique or use of design software was self taught or I learned through other online classes and tutorials. Domestika is actually teaching me a lot more than my actual degree.

I’m starting to think about getting an art degree. I grew up doing art. Question - If a degree program in painting doesn’t include teaching you technique, what do they teach? Why is painting technique instruction not automatically included? I’ll know to go through the curriculum with a fine-toothed comb before I choose a school and a degree program.
@TomasFolanHasici5 ай бұрын
Majority of fine art courses now have little to no technical lessons at all. It's just not part of the curriculum anymore. The best thing you can do is also talk to students, get a real idea of what they do everyday on the course 👍 Most of the time spent is just "studio time" and conceptual lectures. Tutorials for me were only 20 mins every 5 weeks or so. I have a 3 part video series on what I did in years one two and three if that's helpful!

The steps recommended for critical analysis of art: 1: do you know the artist? Is this typical for their style? 2: make sure you can see the artwork. 3: what medium is the artwork made with? Is it a painting, a sculpture, on paper, canvas, cardboard or is it an experience? 4: can you describe it with your own words? 5: after doing the visual analysis you can ask yourself: can I draw out any meaningful details about it? Is there anything culturally significant in this particular piece? 6: why do we care about this artwork in the particular contemporary context? And does it have a historical context? 7: is it referencing any other artist or artworks? If so what effect does this have on the artwork? 8: what meaning does this artwork have? Look at what the artwork is describing, but also what the artist avoids doing, what people choose not to do can empower the meaning behind the action’s that were taken. ( remember that there’s more right answers to this question than wrong answers. Any answer is right if you can use the answers from the previous questions to back up your argument correctly. As you can only make an educated assumption about the intent behind the work.)
