This is a brilliant lesson! I love that you don't need to hear yourself speak the way so many other DIY video hosts seem to. This is a killer build that don't require welding or any special skills. Even ham-handed knuckleheads like me can do this. I'm genuinely excited to build my own.

Almost perfect, only thing missing is black, if you paint it black, mosquito will love it more, they rarely land on white stuff cause it make them visible and venerable. (White clothes are also more anti mosquito than dark clothes) But awesome diy sir, tyvm 🫡👌🏽

Nice build but - I liked it enough to build it. Then I found out that mosquitos can't see UV. They are attracted to infrared (body heat), CO2 and some pheromones emitted by warm bodied animals. I'm now converting the UV bulb to IR infrared LEDs. Adding CO2 and pheromones is beyond my capabilities & budget.

Mosquitos don’t follow light. They like darkness. Black light won’t hurt or help. It’s best to use those Co2 baits that actually attract mosquitos

some ratchet straps come in 1-1/2" width. you can use that as your guide for the upper fins, their respective air holes, and the guide lines at 15:30

I built 3 of these nearly identical to yours maybe 4 years ago but I also lined the inside of the top section with pieces of a mylar emergency blanket to reflect a bit more of the blacklight, but I also used a cheap double bulb round ceiling fixture same diameter as the buckets, stainless steel screen to prevent rust, nut my mistake was that I used one fan that had some good power and the other two I used what I thought was the same fan but did not provide enough airflow to suck anything down respectfully. the first one I even used a cord with an integrated ground fault circuit breaker 15' long 14G wire, good stuff, and I gave the device to my next door neighbor who had a swimming pool and he used it in south miami-dade county very effectively. the other two not good at all but look cool hahahaha wish I had kept them when I moved. but the wife lolz...

When using hot glue, you can use a small block of steel to press the hot glue and the screen together. The glue won't stick to the steel block. Second, why not have ONE piece of screen that's the dimension of the inside of the bottom bucket. That way you only have one seam. If the bucket will sit on the ground, you don't need to cut the bottom out. Third, if you sprinkle some soda in the bottom and pour a little vinegar in, it will give off CO2 for a few hours. CO2 is one of the biggest attractions for mosquitos. If you use a hose to exhale, you can sit outside and watch the mosquitos fly around the end of the hose looking for you. Just don't exhale outside the hose or they'll find you. They also track heat, but mostly CO2...

1:54 incandescent? UV? 🤣🤣🤣 it's infrared as f... with blue filter to fool people. paint it black, you will get the same result. mosquitos are attracted to heat and CO2. which we are emmiting.

This would be cooler if mosquittos were attracted to UV, or any kind of light. Invalidates the whole project.

Someone explained very well why not to “clean” eggs like that in a previous comment and I’ll add that the US is the only country in the world to do this and this is why eggs have to be refrigerated here while anywhere else eggs are stored and sold at room temp. Imagine all the shelf space, power and everything else ahead of sales that could be saved just by not washing eggs like that… billions each year!

If you made the legs of the top longer so they rest on the fan, it would make it easier to attach the top to the middle and also help stabilize the fan.

Err, how are you going to line up the other end of the cut with 'a couple of fasteners' in the seam? Can I suggest you apply a degree of intelligence and only put one fastener in at the end then line up the other end then run your fasteners in a line all the way along the seam?

When I was a kid I had friends that had a Bay House in Matagorda TX. They had 2 bug zappers over a 35 gallon trash can each. The cans would be full in the morning. Modern zappers have been made safe and aren't as effective. It sounded like a battle so many bugs got zapped. Make an effective zapper. P.S. I can't find your big can project.

Cutting out the individual window panels of mesh seems like a waste of time when you could just cut one long piece to roll in a cylinder and put it in as a continuous piece and then glue the perimeter. Just a different way to do it and reduce the extra steps, you already have the material overage.

Thanks for the idea - thinking about building one. I'm wondering if the hole drilling at the bottom of the outer barrel is reall necessary - if the bottom is open, wouldn't it still draw air between the barrels without the holes?

@HaveAGreatDay54

Mosquitoes are attracted to light when they are searching for food. (I am quoting Orkin.com on that statement) All nocturnal insects are. Most biting insects are also attracted to blue color as well, especially blue light. You are correct about the CO2. Biting insects are sensitive to the gasses that their prey emit. I would suggest to the author that using blue buckets would make this trap useful during the day to attract biting flies and adding a propane pilot light to produce a steady saturation of CO2 near the device would make it a pest control powerhouse. Unfortunately, it would cost a fortune to operate 24/7 but I bet it could make a huge dent in a heavily infected area.

If you had left the head on the extension cord and wired a plug on the light socket, you could have had only one plug coming out to work both fan and light.

A small removable chimney with some holes also does the trick just as well and allows usage of a single barrel with way fewer cuts. This is tons of work. All those extra cuts increases the rusting as well.
