Joel, i've looked everywhere on your channel for this information but i can't find it. It may sound stupid but how much headroom should you leave for mastering in your mix ? I've been told -6 to -3 db, and -18 to -12 db. I need to hear the final word from the master himself.
20 күн бұрын
Hey it doesn't matter as long as your mix isn't clipping. No difference in sound. It matters when you start clipping or limiting peaks otherwise a -3db file is just like a -6 file just louder

Hey joel I have watched your podcast with people before and u said you changed your daw cuz fl studio is limiting people etc Can u tell me more what sort of limits fl studio has other than the mixer is limited ?

Hey for sure! Tempo automations are impossible as they stretch audio visually, Automation clips are inconvenient and require way more clicks, you can't select/drag areas, you can't only show the mixer tracks you actually want to use in a template, you can't configure a proper template as well. Organization and workflow are dreadful and targeted to beatmaking. Tons more little quality of life things that make it way more inefficient, everybody who switched to cubase can vouch for this haha.

I've started using Gulfoss for orchestral music as well and thought it was really only used on the master. I hadn't thought of using multiple instances on busses. Having said that how many instances of Gulfoss might you typically use ina project? My busses are somewhat granular and would be afraid of using too many. Basically I have a bus for each section of like instruments (flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, low brass, one per string section, pitched perc and non-pitched perc. )

Why don’t you put the reverb as an insert instead of a send and mix the dry/wet knob? On peut parler en français si tu veux :)

I checked out the multitrack, and honestly, there's nothing to mix. Just set the levels, throw in some reverb, and you're done. The winner is not the most skilful and creative, but the one who "spoiled" the mix with the least amount of processing. All orchestral samples are already with room, and in the right proportion, guitars are already with distortion, you don't need to equalize much, compress too - dynamic range is defined by velocity. I just normalized all tracks under -18 luffs, and it already sounds normal. It seems to me that in a mixing contest there should be something to mix - for example, different microphone positions, DI guitars, some obvious conflicts. There is no such thing here, and all works will sound about the same. And the ones who did the least processing will sound the best - that's how orchestral music mixing works
4 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say so! The multitrack sounds pretty muddy by default, significant EQ, reverb and other processing will be necessary in order to create a decent mix. I think this is fairly representative of what most media composers deal with on a regular basis, a VST multitrack with orchestral libraries, synths and drum libraries. They tend to sound decent on their own but just balance is far from enough. Having live orchestra for another time is definitely a cool idea though.

@@amphibianaudio also not all the tracks are perfectly clean ;) This isn't a 100% perfect export, some balances are really off.... Anyways it's not gonna be that easy haha! Good luck and I'm looking forward to hearing your mix
