Would be pretty awesome if you could make a little video on how to mix CSS since it's one of the most popular libraries being used!

Convolution verb with a multi mics impulse does the trick on dry matterials. Clever layering of the results from all these mics and the dry signal if it still needed, will kill 😉

Dynamite video as always!! Great advice. I had some questions for you if you don't mind? - What is your opinion about using different Libraries with unique rooms in the same template? For example, SSO mixed with Metropolis Ark - both have really distinct rooms. Would using them together create spatial discrepancies in the mix? - I have a struggle of wanting to use a bit of close mic sound to add definition, but adding realistic hall reverb is harder then with the close mic involved. Is the same depth technique you explained still applicable if using a bit of close mic as well?
2 жыл бұрын
as long as you make sure Ark doesn't sound too close in comparison it should blend fine! You can use these tricks to help yeah. The reverb technique still works with close mics, although don't use too much or there really is no point in re blurring a sound that you wanted defined too much.

I just tried your depth trick with the Waves Doubler and I'm amazed how good it works. SP2016 is amazing too. Do you have any guidelines when you use one or the other?
2 жыл бұрын
Hey ! Yeah if you have a dry mic and need true depth use SP, doubler is for adding room to stuff that already sounds good. Glad you like it!

Hi...quick question. When you get live files to mix, do you know if they were recorded to 2" tape at all...and do you add tape saturation to live instruments? Not asking this in a mix capacity, but more curious as to what is commonly done nowadays to achieve the sound heard in films...
2 жыл бұрын
Hey! So nowdays you rarely get files that were recorded to tape, unless you specifically ask for it (and probably pay extra). But it's not generally something that people want by default. What will determine whether or not I add tape to orchestral instruments is mainly how the tone of the recording is, so I think it's important to know what tape does. If your recordings have too much sharp treble, or maybe the violins within your decca tree sound a bit too sizzly in the high treble at times and/or you are just looking for a bit more density, and potentially rolling off some 10-20k, then tape can really beneficial in order to ''densify'' the timbre in the highs. Imho this is a very small detail. Many recordings that were not done on tape at all will sound beautiful and could be described as ''the sound heard in films''. Now if we are talking about older movies, tape saturation is probably a good start. Everything had less fidelity, less highs less lows. How to get the sound heard in films is such a wide question that it's impossible to answer, many factors like the actual writing, the room, the players, the mixing engineer, etc. But imho tape is definitely not a big factor regarding that. And so to figure out if it was recorded to tape, the noise floor can reveal that. Because tape can sometimes be really clean in terms of saturation that one might not even notice. Recordings to tape should always have some kind of measurable noise floor.. Unless it was gated.

@ thank you. All great points. I mostly mix commercial music, last 25 years. I remember when PT made its way into studios. I was just curious how this affected the film music industry since I know some libraries boast tape as their recording medium. Wondering if it’s even used in todays films, but I think you made the point. :). Thanks again for the reply.

Great tip! Do you think this would also work well on a harp? I've got orchestral tools berlin symphonic harps and while I like the sound, the mics beside the close mics have this terrible hissing/air sound that's very noticeable, so I'm stuck using the close mics and was literally thinking about how to make the room feel bigger the other day.
2 жыл бұрын
that would probably work! It works amazing on sample modeling brass too so no reason it wouldn't work with a close harp. Try the most proximity however to avoid double transients on sharp sounds.

@ Appreciate the reply, haven't purchased the Eventide plugin yet, waiting to see if there's a sale on it soon but just the theory from this video has helped me in some of my other compositions/mixes so appreciate the tips! Keep them coming :)

Just noticed you also use an EQ after your Doubler, which I think you didn't in your original video on the depth trick. Anything special going on there or are you just rolling of some highs or something similar?

Rolling off highs and lows a bit :)

Why not increase the number of violins to reduce the harshness and rawness of the violins sound.

That too helps. You can't really magically add violins to your favorite library though..
