i have a few points on my layout as well. Tried a kato shunter as a first loco, my god runs slow and as sweet as a nut. if there's stutter, clean the wheels or track on the points and the running gets even better. Cannot fault the precision of Kato other brands im guessing wont run as easily but then again make sure all the track and point work has good electrical connection i.e. track is pushed fully up against one another.

It's you Andrew, I didn't know you were a Railfan as well! Who could fail to recognise Dougal. I had problems with my Hunslet as well. Sand box fell off the first, guard irons off the second, which then disappeared in transit to me. All well eventually though. Their N gauge locos are much better, and their Birmingham buses are excellent. Regards

I'd certainly check that ALL the electrical pick-ups/wipers are making good contact with all six wheels. That insulated point is a pretty large gap for a small shunter, but the wheels should span that gap I would think?

when i get a loco that does this i turn it round so its going opposit way .if it clears points like that then its usually a contact not touching .then you can either clean or adjust contact carefully .its usually contact mis alignment .

@Andrew D Interesting. I recall many years ago advising the NRM how to get their Bachmann Wainwright to go round curves. I had already had experience of tweaking the contacts on mine. It worked for them too! There was a loco running around at the NRM due to my advice! ☺️ Always worth tweaking the contacts! Also make sure they aren't coated with heat absorbing soldering goo. Wash them carefully with a makeup application sponge-stick and meths, or summat.

Good video. The Peckett is better than the Hunslet granted but both should be better given they are modern and expensive little locos. Not really much of an advance on what was on offer 20 years ago in terms of slow running over points and the locos were of course much cheaper in real terms back then. I made a similar comment in response to a video yesterday in which 'Flying Scott' highlighted the unsuitability of recently released small locos like these for shunting. Note to manufacturers: for modellers who actually run trains, good performance trumps everything else.

@ronaldnorth5037
@ronaldnorth5037 Жыл бұрын
Yes, overgreased axle could well be a factor. I tested my Hunslet for first time on the club layout, it's end to end and we have a standard controller to drive train in one direction and a feed back controller to drive it back again. Loco performed like a Swiss watch on standard controller quiet & smooth, but on Feedback it lurched and stuttered along, l thought it had developed a fault. Checked instruction booklet and advice was not to run it on the old H & M Clipper & Duette units and not to use Feedback types or high frequency track cleaners. It's surprising just how many modellers are still using old battle ship type controllers.

I am still waiting for my Rapido sample to arrive in the post, didn't know about the split chassis arrangement when l placed the order.. I have built and operated a sucession of 'lnglenook' style shunting layouts for home & exhibition use so reliable motive power is a must have. Up to now the Hornby 08 (Gronk) and if you can obtain a reliable Bachmann example, these are my first choice. I would never think of using Setrack/deadfrog turnouts though, always used Peco live frog polarity switched medium radius turnouts, and even add duplicate wiring to insure against failure. I have recently added a Pi 'Victory' industrial to my roster, and apart from some QC issues with badly fitted parts it's a very reliable lowgeared performer, if a little noisy though. Very nice mico layout, tempted to build something similar myself, but at the moment l am busy building yet another shunting plank together with a fellow MR club member. Thanks for the review, very interesting.

Cheers Ronald. I hope your Rapido has now arrived and is working well. Yes, I do have an old Bachmann Gronk and the slow running is superb. I was hoping for the same from this loco, but…

A lovely looking loco, but I'm very glad I did not part with over £100 for one of them. I would expect to receive a loco that could traverse those points without shaking for that price. I don't think there is any excuse for that poor performance. It really should have decent contacts for each wheel for that cost. Personally, I think that is pretty pitiful. Especially that it is no better than a four wheel peckett, in fact it actually looked far worse.

You shunter and tender is definitely better executed than mine, Andrew. I really need to get the connecting between mine replacement with the smaller plug and socket I bought. The wires were way too stiff on the first. Your shunter round really nice and slow, and it's not even re-geared like mine either! Top job Andrew, I'm looking to seeing more progress in the future. Have you thought of adding another module on the end? Maybe add an indoor warehouse scene on the far left end where the track goes into a doorway? Or something else like a dairy or brewery between the right hand module and the fiddle yard. The world is your lobster, really.

Thanks Dibley! I’m already on it :) There are some things I wish I’d done differently, and now this is as good as done I’d like a mini-project to be getting on with. So I’m thinking of exactly as you say - and it will be as intended, which is the unloading area for the Goods In to the bakery. I just have to figure out how I’m going to juice the frog of an electrofrog point if I’m going to wire the blades and not use a point motor.

@@andrewd8853 Awesome. I'll look forward to it. My points are controlled by wire in tube, and a switch controlling them switches the polarity of the frog. Very much like Luke Nobel has done here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZdlkpeHzeCaoKc.html

That really is a fantastic little shunting layout you have built there. Lots of operating scope for such a small place. It feels like you have built your layout similar to the methodology which I built mine. Much is scratch built, I have grass scatter made from sieved and painted sawdust. My home made static grass application tool (fly swatter and strainer) like yours works, but it needs more power. I am thinking of upgrading the transformer unit in it as I have seen this fibre on KZfaq.
