During Covid I had so much freetime I rigged up a jig to hold my blades in place and a wicked edge/ edge pro style sharpening system and was basically putting knife edges on my blades. I had three sets that I changed out weekly and was mowing like every other day. That was the best my lawn has ever looked. Those were the days. Bring back covid.

What degrees setting is used on the jig when sharpening the Honda blades thank you
@AllAmericanSharpener12 күн бұрын
We typically see a 35 or 40 degree setting needed to match the factory bevel on Honda blades. Your mileage may vary, and require a little experimenting to fine tune the angle.

According to blade manufacturers (specifically Gator), when a blade is unbalanced immediately following sharpening, you should only remove additional metal from the sail side (opposite the sharpened edge) in order to bring the blade into balance. In this demo you removed additional metal from the sharpened surface of the heavier side. From what I understand, this is not a best practice and removes unnecessary metal from the cutting surface, weakens the cutting surface of blade, shortens useful life from reducing the amount of metal to be removed in future sharpenings, etc.
@AllAmericanSharpenerАй бұрын
Thanks for your input. In our experience, a few swipes more on one side does not remove enough material to weaken the blade in any noticeable way. As for removing unnecessary metal, we believe your are saving a lot more metal than your are removing just by using a jig, such as ours. Maybe in an extreme case where the weight and balance difference was much larger, we might go along with that. - Denny

So,I have the all American Sharpener 5005 model. And I have the Honda HRN 216 model would I still use the Honda jig for this model? The reason I ask is because my blades vary a little from the ones in the video. Looking forward to using this product I’ve heard (from all the positive reviews) great things

Are you supposed to touch up the back side of the blades?
@AllAmericanSharpener2 ай бұрын
No, you should only grind on the top beveled side of the blade. We usually use a wire cup attachment to clean grass and debris from the back side. Grinding on the back could compromise the sturdiness of blade, and doesn't contribute to getting a sharper edge.

I have two Commercial mowing companies that like and insist on a 45 degree blade bevel. Both claim the Stripes stand out much better. I don't mow much so I take their word of it and cash their checks!
@AllAmericanSharpener3 ай бұрын
While industry standard for the bevel is typically 30 degrees, people's preferences certainly vary. A steeper angle will result in a stouter blade edge, which may improve their blade life. The risk with going too steep can be "scraping" rather than cutting the blades of grass. Thanks for your share.

@AllAmericanSharpener3 ай бұрын
We've had varying feedback about the angles on the Honda blades, so you may need to do some experimentation at first. Some have said 35, and others have said 40 degrees was a better match. I will also share another link to a video section showing a little trick for determining the setting to match the blade bevel angle. People have liked this one. This video should start around the 1:14 mark. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMl_lKqWurmclGg.htmlsi=fS_ROo6A2xs-xmpB&t=74

Thanks for the tip on using the shaft on the grinder adapter to check the angle of the blade. I’ve had an All American Sharpener for 4 years. And to be truthful, I sucked at sharpening my lawn mower blade before my purchase. Your device is rock solid and easy to use. When I replaced my 20+ year old Honda push mower with a new Honda self propelled, you had the adapter for the new style of Honda blades. You have put a lot of thought into your product and are on top of changes in the mower blade industry. After my purchase of your sharpener, every question I had about the device was answered promptly. Replacement parts are readily available. For all these reasons, I would strongly recommend this product. You are not going to get the quality and support with the cheap knockoffs I’ve seen on the internet.

Damn, that was an amazing tip! I purchase your sharpener a couple of years ago and love it. I do have 1 question though regarding the Honda Mower blades. I purchased the adapter and used it the first time but this last time I was in a rush and couldn’t find the adapter and was “able to” to attach them without the adapter. Was I doing something wrong? How was I able to attach and sharpen the Honda Blade without the adapter?
@AllAmericanSharpener4 ай бұрын
At the time we built the adapter, we only knew of Honda twin blade sets where at least the bottom (wider) blade needed the adapter to sit flush on the vise plate. Over time, more Honda blade shapes have been added or discovered. There have been some reports of Honda twin blade sets that were able to fit in the vise clamp without using the adapter. We are building a database of Honda model/blade numbers that do not need the adapter. If you'd like to discuss in more detail, please contact us at [email protected]
