Good Show, lots of ground covered. I agree the D needs to be the focus this off season Demelo is the priority to sign, Ville has to be allowed to play so the team can see what they have ( we can't lose another D prospect to waivers, who was never given a chance) We have to trade for a top 4 RHD, probably the cost of a rooster player or top prospect Use next season to give some of the other prospects actual auditions of 10 game stretches' to see if they are ready or need more seasoning or don't fit at all, not just a game here or game there I like watching 27 as much as anyone, when he is going. Teams ( Avs are the most recent example )have figured it out that if you Gap up on him and don't let him get going with a head of steam he is a lot less effective, he also becomes very frustrated and becomes even less effective. That's my feel on why he is a no show in the playoffs PS: As I watch the playoffs and see the impact Lafreniere is having, you only have to go back to the 2023 season where he was struggling, people were calling him a bust, and there were numerous trade rumors. instead Laviolette and the coaches kept him the line up and helped him get his confidence up and game going, and see the results. The Jets did the exact opposite with Perfetti, for that reason alone I am glad Bones is gone

Thank you Don! Always try and dive into as many angles as possible, glad we covered a lot of ground you were looking for! Demelo definitely #1 priority HAVE to give Ville runway next year, or he’ll be the singular prospect asset they burned the hardest if they lost him for nothing. They really should approach next year with that in mind There definitely could be a lot of validity to the Ehlers take there! Man… LaF has really figured it out and been a treat to watch. I stare over at Dallas for the same reasons this playoff run as well

I think the coaching hire will tell you everything you need to know about how the off-season is going to go. If they decide to go with Scott Anriel it will be only the moves that are required and small tweaks but not he massive changes that really need to happen. Speaking of Arniel, I feel like he is getting a free pass because of the limited success he had early with Bowness out. If you dig just a little deeper and not count overtime loses as it's own category his record the two times Bowness was out was 10 - 7 and the record against teams that made the playoffs was 3 -5. Combine that with a penalty kill that was ineffective all year doesn't paint the picture of someone who can make the necessary in game or post game adjustments to be a difference maker or a step up from what Rick Bowness was able to accomplish. I truly believe that Bowness changed the culture , buy-in and effort level of the team but they succeded because of who they are as players and not anything tactically or strategically that the coaching staff did. All this points to hiring a coach that can build on what Bowness established so someone who can maintain the culture, effort and buy-in levels but can make in game and post game adjustments as well as be able to incorporate tools at their disposal like analytics. Arniel is like playing blackjack and staying on 15 when the dealer has a face card - you can win with that strategy but statistically you will lose in the long run especially if the ultimate goal is a long playoff run.

I really like the idea of a stop-gap year, letting the young guys ferment and ready to contribute on ELCs. Some combination of Lambert, Chibrikov, Rutger, Salo, and Ville will work and contribute on really cheap contracts. There are too many promising names there for none of them to work out. Odds are there are 1 or 2 that don't work and they are still young enough to carry value to trade for good current help. Moving off a Vet Forward makes sense for this, not just the big two I'll mention in a bit, but maybe another as well. While my preference would be for Appleton, just had a career year and I doubt he makes this the new norm, I feel like Iafallo would be the more likely culprit just seemed like one of the last guy to be considered when constructing lines. I would much prefer the 81 trade over the 27 trade. There are player traits/skills that make GMs put blinders on and overpay. 81's pure goalscoring could drive up the price like how PLD having big, top-6 center potential did for his return. What makes Ehlers effective has historically been undervalued so the odds of winning that trade in terms of replacing his impact are much lower. Personally, on the D end I think Salo at least starts in the AHL. He'll be turning 20 in August right before training camp and has little experience on the NA ice from what I remember. I think he very well get up to the NHL at some point, our blue line is unlikely to be as injury-free as it was last year and he is a quality RHD. I think the transition will happen much faster if he gets 25 minutes a night with the moose and he can join full-time around Christmas/New Year's. The actual structure of the D is so up in the air projecting anything concrete is damn near impossible. Only for sures are Morrissey, Samberg, Ville, 1 of Pionk/Schmidt, and eventually Salo sometime in the next calendar year. I really enjoyed the "Breif Week" and am excited to see how this all shakes out over the summer.

I really think a “bridge year” is the best way for this org to try and win in the first half of those 37/55 deals, and I think you can still sneak a playoff round in with it. All those guys won’t necessarily hit, but I don’t see like with what you’re saying why at least 1-2 won’t. Couldn’t agree more with your breakdown on 81 vs 27 and how the league tends to value both skill sets. This is where smart teams make the hard choice to better the franchise. Yeah, it’s going to take a lot of time for the full D picture to come into play right now. Just can go so many ways as of today! Thanks for checking them all out and we are glad you enjoyed! Thanks for taking the time to listen, but also interact, it’s these discussions I love so much in putting out content

With you guys - D is the priority. Saddens me but I think Dillon priced himself or rather, termed himself out of Wpg this past year. Good for him, bad for us. I can see DeMelo re-signing here but stranger things have happened. I doubt we will be able to UFA a decent RHD Def so it will have to come via trade and this dives in to the prospect pool….perhaps. But let’s talk about 27. I think we are at the fresh start moment for both he and the Jets. Clearly, there’s a disconnect and Ehlers is not able to take the next step to a consistent too line winger. Some may say it’s ice time…perhaps….but I would counter it’s more on Ehlers not being trusted. I thought the Josh Manson goal in the playoffs summarized what the coaching staff sees in Ehlers, or rather, what they are afraid of in giving him the top minutes. He got knocked on his a55 with the puck and then rather than trying to get back up, started stickhandling like he was in a kayak. Pick gets taken away - stretch pass to Manson and goal. That is arguably a turning point in the series. And it was from impromptu kayaking. But it wasn’t just that, 27, imo was terrible in those 5 games in all but one or two shifts and with the commentary I think signals there’s a mutual willingness from both to seek a fresh start. You guys are right though, I don’t think we are going to get a big return. I think the flashes from 27 somewhat colour our glasses rose - the rest of the league doesn’t see him in the same light as most Wpg fans. Your KFC scenario is intriguing and perhaps is a good pre-emptive move but wow, that would be such a huge risk. I don’t think that fits Chevy’s MO. Mind you he traded 29 - I guess we are now seeing why he did it. Mony - I’m with you guys; like him but he’s Paul Stastny-lite. Would be great on short term deals moving up and down the lines but he may have some team giving him term in which he’s long gone. Would be a huge mistake for the Jets to term him but I don’t think they are considering it. In summary, Jets partially solve the D problem with an Ehlers trade to a San Jose or Islanders or Columbus? A team that will wan to deploy him top line and PP and we’ll get a middle-aged solid but not spectacular D in return.
@TopLyneMedia
@TopLyneMedia 15 күн бұрын
Yeah saddens me about the possibility with Dilly too. Perhaps Salomonsson blossoms and becomes that RHD I think you’re way over analyzing a goal in a singular game in which getting tripper and either trying to maintain control of the puck or trying to get up were ending up in the same outcome. I think there’s a point to be there with “lack of trust”. But it really falls on deaf ears when this is the same org trotting out the worst defensive duo in 81-55 in the entire NHL. The Winnipeg Jets not understanding/not trusting Nik Ehlers to be their game breaker is 100% fully on the Winnipeg Jets misunderstanding what they’ve had and that’s on them. Worst managed and used asset in 2.0 history. Could you imagine if they never let Buff be Buff? Connor’s the move for an org that actually wants to be serious about taking a step forward. And honestly, I don’t see it as a huge risk at all. Typically come out ahead moving guys with 1 tool. He’s everything Laine hates said Laine was being a 1 trick pony. Except this versions softer.

Don’t really mean to rag on Niki. I highlighted that one as an example of his play that must drive the coaching staff nuts. There is no denying he has the skill set to be an elite producer in the NHL. Jets haven’t found it. Maybe it’s personnel. Maybe it’s system? Whatever it is it hasn’t been here and there’s a growing body of work that is beginning to suggest it may never be. But who knows, new coach coming. His salary demands will be ‘nicer’ hopefully.

Really good synopsis guys.... and of course, you know that the last thing I want is for Nikolaj Ehlers to go anywhere... but if he wants to go, I'll support him wherever he is. Having said that, if he does go, this team will go backward, they'll lose their speediest guy who is so much fun to watch on the ice. And with having lost to a team who are speedy like Avs are, getting rid of our speediest guy is the last thing management should be thinking of. I'm intrigued with the thought of KC and what happens with him when his contract is up for renewal. Likely who is coaching the team will have an impact on deployment of the boys/lines etc. If we get someone in who doesn't put lines according to wishes of the boys, and plays the ones who are strongest together, we could go places. I'll be at the K&R party next week, hope to see you there too. Enjoy your week, Nik and Jordan. :)

There are players like Pionk that I think were Bones picks to be core guys, Appy would be another. One thing that could come out of a coaching search is feedback from people outside the org. on players like these 2 who get top minutes and are secondary pieces at best. One of the things the Avs did was every time Pionk came over the boards so did Mackinnon and we saw the results. The Avs were dumping it in of Pionk's side knowing they could pressure him for a turnover

I think Chevy deinitely has Sunk Cost Fallacy when it comes to Pionk he just cant move on from him due to the fact he was in the Trouba trade. He is determined to make Pionk relevant even at the cost of hurting the team. Dillon is a tough case he will turn 34 in November and I don't see him taking a 2 year deal. My other concern is how lucky the Jets were with injuries last year and Dillon's stlyle of play unfortunately is going to catch up to him sooner or later. It is interesting that everyone keeps talking about upgrading the defence but want to bring back DeMelo and Dillon. Morrissey and Samberg are locked in and very liitle chance you can move both Schmidt's and Pionk's contracts. This would imply that you have 5 slots locked in and in theory Heinola will make this team next year. I definitely think DeMelo should be re-signed but Dillon is risky and if you give him 4 years that contact could look pretty bad after year 2. The playoffs have exposed the lack of speed and skating ability in the defensive group and that needs to be addressed. Definitley some tough decisions to be made before next season.

Arniel is probably fine as HC, the bigger issue in my mind is how they fill out the rest of the staff, for all the good things Bones did, special teams was not one of them and they need to upgrade current coaches, also get some coaches that aren't afraid to use the data the video and analytics guys provide. look what it did for the Avs. Bednar said after the 7-0 game he and his staff were going to break down the game to see what went wrong and what they needed to do. Great listen and for a "brief" week it looks like it'll be anything but. I'd probably give my grades as such: Chevy - B+: The thing that holds him back from the A range is the deadline acquisitions not quite working out and missing on RD upgrades at the same time. The extensions for 55 and 37 avoided the rebuild we were all afraid was inevitable, add in other depth re-signings and the absolute Larceny that was the PLD trade and he's been great. Round 2 probably would have gotten this up to an A Bones - B-: He did what he was brought in to do, inspired a culture of accountability in the locker room, and fixed the divisions. To have a culture turn around this significant while keeping the most significant players is quite the feat. But when it was time to take that next step he showed where his deficiencies lie as a coach. I could see the Jets being a far more attractive landing spot in the coaching carousel because of Bones's works. And if that is the case then we probably have access to better-quality coaches than last time we were doing a HC search. I'm skeptical of Arniel due to his association with the PK this year, Chevy needs to do a wide search to bring in the best option he can. Enjoy your retirement Bones. Special teams coaches - F: Was a significant weak spot all year. The only benefit from this is that if the new HC wants to bring some assistants with him it will be easy to make room for them on the bench. Looking forward to the rest of this week's episodes guys. Hoping that your Perfetti <-> Robertson analogy ages like fine wine.

Hey guys.... wow, okay we are pretty much on the same page with our mindsets again. So I'll answer the questions you asked and a few more thoughts: I give Chevy an A for what he did in this past season, bringing in guys we needed. He didn't sit back. He jumped to get the best available players on the market and I give him full marks for that reason. I'm also a 1/4 season ticket holder for the 1st time, in large part because I saw what the owners/management were trying to do with this team so I've put my money where my mouth is. I also do not believe that Rick Bowness will be back coaching the Jets in the next season. The heir apparent is Scott Arniel and I'm good with that... he did well overall in that early leave of absence Rick took when his wife Judy needed him and an easy fix for PK is bring in someone who can run it. The PP coach role is a bigger issue for me. And of course we know Boston's coach Jim Montgomery has carried on to the 2nd round so he likely won't be available. I did have a remote pipe dream that if management went for a different coach, if Cooper was let go by Tampa, he would be my first choice to bring in. Plus he has that pedigree... he is also of a more gentle nature which would be important with our boys. Back to Bones: What he did with the roster in the days we were playing the Avs was run with what he was determined to make work. I also noticed comments made by various players about things, and that includes DeMelo who said everything needs to be under a microscope because they really felt they had something special here. (I do too). The difference between Avs and every other team was the volume of shots our D guys and Helle faced which was 37 SF/G, which is the highest shot volume by a team in round 1 in playoffs. Closest comparison is Carolina with 32.3 and Florida with 32.0. Shots against for Avs by Winnipeg was 28.0. Our highest SOG guy in playoffs was KC with 19, next highest was Ehlers with 14, Monny with 13, Morrissey 12, Scheifele 10, Vilardi 9, Nino 9, Toffoli 8. Something I noticed in the Avs vs Jets series, Nichushkin and Lehkonen were their biggest goal getters, yet Lowry line which we know is our best defensive line was not assigned to them until Game 5. Or it was more noticeable then. Lowry was assigned to Mack's line otherwise and in the meantime, Nichushkin and Lehkonen were left to push their way into our D zone with not much hassle. www.tsn.ca/nhl/statistics Having said that, we know that Lowry had a serious hand injury from the pressers post season and he couldn't shoot like he would normally do. That did make a difference. Ehlers is not playing for Denmark in Worlds because of his neck... losing Dillon who I think is one of our best underrated D guys played a role in the loss of this series. Same with Vladdy getting injured. We had injuries which likely made some of our best reticent about putting themselves into the line of fire. Dallas gets to play Avs next and they have the template to look back at from our run vs Avs... the result may turn out different but I think it'll be a slug fest all the way. Looking forward to the Edmonton vs Canucks series and enjoyed watching NYR vs Carolina today. I think that's it for now but sorry for the full page I wrote.. lots of things on my mind. Next year it's time to let the kids shine. I want to see this.

I think the area that was really exposed was the D, I was surprised that this group made it through the year, but when it really counted they just are not a top level D core. Keep JM and Samberg then rebuild from there 1. Pionk has to go, his play continues to deteriorate and cost the Jets in every game throughout the playoffs 2. Get out of the Schmidt contract 3. End the Stanley experiment 4. Get some of the prospects into the lineup, give them actual playing time and see what we have ( Villie, Capo, Salomonsson, etc ) 5. Maybe keep Demelo, and Dillion

Rick has done SO MUCH GOOD for this franchise. That's what hurts me the most with his brutal decisions this series. He aint coming back. He was away multiple times this season... What worries me, is now Arniel next up!? Almost certainly with his record replacing him (minus the very last stint...) Who replaces special teams? Is that enough of a change? Can Arnie do it?! I just dont see us passing on Arnie as head coach for atleast a season... Is that another wasted year?! God i hope not.

I had a thought about something Jordan said about building around Lowry for the series. I’ve always said they over value his skills and build minutes around him and 55 leaving not much for secondary scoring. They think he’s a poor mans version of Bergeron but he is closer to Kris Draper. Did Detroit build their entire team/roster around him and needing to get him 15-17 minutes a night. It sure felt like he did his usual mid December- March stone hands routine again. In short I think we can say that he’s back to being a 4th line center on a deep playoff team.

I’ve (Nik) rode the Lowry 4C train for some time. This year I *think* you could qualify him as a very, very good 3C (though this was arguably a career year, hard level to maintain). I think the org needs to look at providing him offensively capable RW for Nino and him, if you want to leverage him so much has to be the tradeoff.

Teams across the league, even the good ones give their young stars the leash to learn and play. Wyatt Johnston, Logan Stankoven in Dallas are two that come to mind immediately. Play your young guys, because there is a chance they do something special. playing some ahl plug doesnt move the needle. first time listener here, enjoyed the commentary. lot of ideas I've been yelling at my TV a lot this season and seasons past.

Thanks for checking us out Kevin and appreciate you bringing your thoughts here! That’s exactly it, you have to give players rope to learn and grow. In Winnipeg, you get consistent stops and starts. For an org that prides itself on “draft and development”, it sure feels like miss on the whole development and play portion.

The Perfetti usage is another one in a long list of drafted and developed players who either have never been given a chance to show what they can do or were misused and chased out of town. As much as Bones has had an effect, Chevy must be involved in player decisions as well . Our D sucks other than the 44 & 2 pairing, but we let Kovacevic go on waivers ( he played 62 games and was +11 this year) Chisholm put on waivers after a 1 game try out ? and he plays 31 games for the Wild. Now we have the Perfetti issue. I will be shocked if he doesn't demand a trade this summer. I get he is an RFA but his agent will try.

From Murat Ates article in The Athletic - 'Bowness has said many times that he coaches by feel, trusting his gut, and that he’s happier to lose coaching his way than changing his approach to the game.' This tells you why this team has had the same problems all year - add some stubborness, arrogance, confirmation bias and Dunning-Kruger effect and you have a perfect cocktail for a coach that doesnt fit in today's game. Looking back when did this team play its best was when they had injuries - I have to think the reason why is it took Bowness out of the equation he had no choice but to play optimum lineups and get out of the way. The Perfetti and Ehlers situations are an utter disasters - you have destroyed the relationship you had with on of your young key pieces you almost have to trade him at this point because he more than likely is going to walk first chance he gets. I know people don't like Trevor Zegras but I am making that call and kicking the tires. The Ehlers situiation is just as bad you have a coach that has tried to take a player and coach out everything that makes him a succesful - a good coach takes the strengths and maximizes what they can do, not adapt your roster to your system. All of Bowness's decisions seem to be based on how to fit players in his system and therories of how hockey was played 30 years ago. You have to take the approach Dallas has the last couple of years - you have a lot of good veteran players you need to incorporate the prosepects into the lineup. I would like to see a rookie on the majority of lines next year paired with two veterans to mentor them. The other thing to consider is Rutger McGroarty, do you think looking at this dysfunctional situation he may want to reconsider playing here. The forwards that are on this team should not be blocking he from having a role next year. Coaching staff needs to be cleared out - it is a situation where you need a new methodology and messge, promoting anyone from within is the same message with a different voice.

The coaching with your gut over every available data point in 2024 is ridiculous. And I couldn’t agree more. Had someone reach out to me this weekend “what’s it say as a coach, when you have the talent Perfetti has, and you’re running away from coaching it”. Destroying those relationships for THIS result is absolutely inexcusable. Couldn’t agree more on the Ehlers thing. By far the biggest burnt prime in 2.0 history because they don’t understand and respect his skill set. It’s just so frustrating. The Dallas model is exactly what I’d like to see. It’s their only way to crack this window back potentially open a couple years down the line. Because if we are being honest, the window on the vets is closed. Go young and shoot for upside

I just have to say, the slash they called on Lowry to McKinnon was SO god damn weak, for the double or tripple penalties they refused to call avs doing to Scheif, first a hold, (they called) then we hold onto the puck, then a slide, miss the puck and they trip scheif, and then got pissy and delivered a cheap shot cross check to his face/neck that went completely uncalled... Because a penalty was already called?! Because the refs didnt want to get booed even worse or what?! The interference from Manson on Namestnikov was almost just as blatant of a miss... And to see the athletic completely blow off BAD officiating because "the penalties that did the jets in were automatic" is complete horseshit from some Calgary based writer... THATS why you cant miss blatant ones on one team tho, when you never missed a single chance on us. Especially the third. Idek what the fudge that was...We missed multiple chances at multiple more PP goals. They only gave us our second PP with 5 to go after the game was well over... After that insane streak. I just cannot stand when bad officiating has such an impact on the game. That entire third was nothing but avs pps. 4 mins, 5 on 3, you name it, no problem calling out shit if a penalty is already called, if they missed something and need to get together to Review... But refused to call multiple penalties done to scheif, because we're in the avs barn? Dont want us to get THAT big of a lead in the second?! I just cant stand this shit sometimes man. Its just so frustrating. Even if its just legitimate mistakes and/or misses... Idk how you can let it get that lopsided in the third, missing some of the shit they did in the second...
