I was a "closet" poet for 20 years before I ever shared my writing with anyone other than my Partner. It helped through a lot of stress and gave me an outlet for emotion during difficult times. On a whim, I decided to start performing at open mics. Now, a few years later, I'm working on publishing my early works as a secondary survivor of sexual assault in hopes that it will help others. Of course, I'm still writing and performing new material on this topic and others.

I'm 32 y.o and new to the world of poetry, although when I was younger I had this small moleskine in which I would write my thoughts, so I guess I always had it in me somewhere. So I'm at a point in my life where I'm trying to recover from love addition and allow my attention to be focused somewhere else. Writing poetry brings me so much joy, the process of creating, choosing the right words, finding the right image, editing, cutting it, all of it. It's the fist time that I do something and despite how it looks like, I simply enjoy the process. I signed myself up for an open mic night and I'm shitting myself a bit. I'm Italian but challenged myself to write in English. I thought I wouldn't be able to do it but turns out I can. So yeah, wish me good luck 😂 and I say hi to all the others fellow poetry buddies out there ☺️

I'm from London 🇬🇧 but originally also from Ghana 🇬🇭 and I really want to learn spoken word/poetry the reason being is because I am a very big thinker, I can be doing the most basic tasks and randomly stare into thin air thinking about complex topics and having deep thoughts about society. I feel like learning spoken word poetry will enable me to voice and share my thoughts in an impactful and beautiful way.

These tips!!! 🔥🔥🔥 also, spoken word poets learns 90% of their poems. And 10% of the time, some poets just reads it from their book or journal. A good example of a reader!poet is Shelby Leigh. An example of a spoken word poet is Rupi Kaur. And I do agree with reading aloud your poems if you are going to perform them. Also these can be acting tips too

Embrace the emotions and address them, that is called inspiration! Those emotions are connected to thoughts and experiences. Always stay true to you and your intent. We all have a purpose and story. Believe in yourself, always!

I am glad to be the first to comment on this poem this year. Sister, we need to talk...This is still relevant in my heart. I was blown over by your words. This poem is G-O-L-D. You are more than a "rap song" _You are Nelson Mandela!

I believe that if you are meant to be a poet, the Muse will come... this is not something that can be forced. Technique can be taught, ( to an extent) tips given, etc. But a gift of language - that mastery of craft visits certain people on a whim - it isn't for everyone, just as not all are meant to be great chefs or baseball players. Yes, everyone can write a poem - and it may even touch others emotionally, but is it a GREAT poem? Is it publishable? Can you write hundereds of other great poems like it through the years? I am 60 years old and have been widely published, ( including 4 books) I have facilitated workshops, done the open mic and slam scene... poetry was my life. But- I have had some serious medical and family issues lately and haven't written anything in a couple of years. It is more than mere " writer's block" this may be depression, burn out, I don't know. A therapist has gotten me back into a workshop ( it isn't until the 1st) and I sincerely hope that the creative juices will get to flowing again - I have been watching videos like this to see if a spark is ignited. What else can I do? I know the advice " just write" but when I do, it is garbage and not even a fraction of the caliber of what my writing was years ago! Are there older poets out there who have experienced this?

Everyone is not a writer if you have nothing to write about then you're not a writer. When people say everyone is a writer I have to say everyone's not everyone dose not have the gift to write and tell fascinating stories. Just like everyone cannot sing, everyone cannot rap, or everyone cannot write neat.
