It's pronounced "technix" not tekneeks. The ch in Technics is a G, the way Dutch and Germans pronounce it. Ghuchugh, like a cough sound.

The service is tops. My colleague's Lenovo ThinkPad laptop went on the fritz and needed the motherboard replaced but they couldn't source one. It took too long and triggered a replacement process. So he got a new laptop. Then 3 weeks later, he got a note that they found a replacement motherboard and would be sending it back fixed to him. He offered to send back the new laptop but they couldn't accept it because there was no process for that. He asked whether they wanted to keep his fixed laptop as a loaner. Lenovo said they can't. So he ended up with 2 laptops for the inconvenience of losing the use of his for 4 weeks

Back in the 90’s I.would record my Def Leppard hysteria cassette tape on to a blank cassette tape cause I had a boombox with a dual cassette deck but got rid of that. And got a cd boombox with a signal cassette deck I would record my cds to blank cassettes I used t d k blank cassette cause they had much better base plus 120 minutes of tape so that means that I would have 2 to 3 cds recorded on one blank cassette tape

I never bought prerecorded cassettes. I did have a Denon 3 head cassette and enjoyed making mix tapes from Vinyl. With a 3 head deck you could equalize the tapes while monitoring. Some of the recordings were almost as good as the Vinyl source. I would listen to the Vinyl one or two times and record the albums on cassette. I have some Vinyl that is 40 years old that are in absolutely pristine condition. This was one advantage of having a cassette deck, you could preserve your Vinyl.

Sony has the "secret sauce" for superior audio encoding. I recently purchased a used Sony HAP-Z1ES from eBay and re-ripped my entire CD collection (this time to raw wave). The Sony's analog output (which is the evidence of their internal upscaling and DAC processing) is amazing, and even far superior to listening to the same rips on the network with other devices components (even a Sony UBP-X800 4k player which supports hi-res files from disc AND USB). It honestly makes most of my CD collection "sound" as if it's hires. The best way to describe it on layman's terms is it makes digital 'sound' like vinyl, but without any of the downsides of vinyl. It's absolutely amazing. So, I am not surprised at your 'budget solution' to hires audio punching well above its weight.

This reminded me of when I found an mp3 player like the one I had in jr high and high school. I found a Creative Zen 2gb that was identical to my old one and thought it would be fun to have one again. I figured it would just need a new battery installed but quickly learned that the OLED display that it had was bad and that any of the few that still had working ones would die soon too!

Nice. I must be about your age (B 1970) and I pretty much only bought blank tapes to record my own stuff, mix tapes or other people's vinyl. My friend and I even had a set up where we would never both buy the same vinyl. One of us would buy a record and the other would record it for ourselves. With a couple exceptions, the only prerecorded cassettes I bought were demo tapes from local visiting regional bands.

Thank you for this cool history retrospective of IBM and Lenovo. One aspect that make ThinkPad special is indeed the on-site warranty (3 years by default in EU). I also saw it in action with my P72 bought in 2018 (and that I still use to this day, still a beast for what I need it for and in pristine condition) when one of the two fans stopped spinning (in that case the laptop still boots and work in a degraded mode where the remaining fan is spinning at full speed all the time). After opening a ticket online, Lenovo immediately shipped at home the cooling subsystem part (which includes both fans and the pipes) from China, then a technician came at home to make the replacement. I vaguely remember he told me he worked for IBM. He had been repairing ThinkPad (and other stuff) for 25 years and although he never disassembled a P72 yet (was more used to T480 and smaller models) he did the disassembly and reassembly in 25 mins or so, which is no small feat as the P72 had to be almost entirely disassembled with its many screws and connectors.

Wow! A year long saga to fix one Walkman?! I have about 12 Sony Walkmans that all need a new belt in my storage that I started buying about 14 years ago before many started collecting. Yeah, most got a new model when one broke and couldn’t afford to get all the models you wanted. Not like now with buying used and non working one and buying to collect at a fraction. Yeah, I remember that Walkman and a friend had one when Madonna and Prince were starting out in 1984. The problem with replacing the belt, it’s not like changing the battery and more complicated. Also, once you e changed it, you may need to change the belt again even when you don’t use it. Oh does that model those charging sticks? I just saw one where the face plate is off and the glue dried up. When buying a Walkman or boombox, you almost have to assume it’s not working and pay as low as you can. Oh yeah, that model came in silver and also black. Yeah, that model was slick and modern and that was a big deal in the 80’s having a small gadget and have so many features.

I was going to consider a mini Sanyo boombox without an antenna and battery cover, but after watching this, I’m gonna stick to something as complete as possible to save myself the headaches. There’s so many complete boomboxes and Walkmans, why not spend a few more dollars on a more complete unit or better condition to save yourself from going crazy. Bc even figuring out how to change the belt, chances are something else may need to be fixed like the auto reverse in your case. I recently took apart a vintage Ain’t clock radio bc there was something loose. I figured out what was loose and some antenna with thin wires connected to it that had gotten unglued. So since I didn’t have any glee, I closed it up and all the sudden the am radio was not working. What drove me crazy was not knowing if it was working before I opened it or it was already like that when I bought used and never checked. So that’s what o mean by making it worst of you don’t know what you’re doing. Lol! I wish more ppl. we’re into vintage audio, like ppl are with vintage cars and have more supppet or be able to yak to a shop and the clerk saying oh you got a Walkman 2 and I’ve worked on hundreds of them before. Eureka, that’s a great business idea and you know that’s gonna be the case 30 years from now!

Also after watching, you made me realized that vintage non working radios have value for their parts. I mean if you know what you’re doing and just go to the goodwill and buy up some of the better electronics and you could start your own repair and parts business and rent a small space.

WOZ clearly had the right idea. I remember 1986 or so seeing a Macintosh and IBM PC and thinking g the computer world was going backwards. I had an Atari 8-bit, other members of my family had c64. School had Apple IIE and I'm wondering where the sound and beautiful graphics gone. Yeah the IIe should have been the Apple 3, IIGS should have been Macintosh, but if Apple went that direction would the 65816 evolved at all? I agree WOZ waa correct pointing out computers should continue from previous generations. However I don't think you should natively have to support the previous generation forever. I'm ok with MS-Dos getting dropped along with Win16, and I'm ok with Win32 on the chopping block. Perfect opportunity for emulation.

As a tape / CD / audio nerd in the 80s I was aware of the phenominal sound you cound get from a Metal tape using Dolby C. But most friends were happy with ferric, no dolby (sigh). Techmoan recently did a 'Cassettes are better than you remember' video which is quite an eye opener as to the sheer quality obtainable with great 70s/80s/90s gear.

Excellent video. I'm a bit of a ThinkPad fan myself. My first ThinkPad was the T61 14" widescreen. It did not have the IBM logo. I have about 7 ThinkPad's currently, the newest being the L460. I don't have the T61 anymore. Some notes: 1. For me, the last IBM ThinkPad is the T61 with the IBM logo. 2. You said the X41T has a dual core CPU. Not true. It has a Pentium M CPU which is single core. 3. The X41T has a hard drive whitelist which means it will only accept certain hard drives and nothing else. 4. Centrino basically means the CPU and Ethernet and wireless are all Intel-made. 5. Later on, Intel introduced Centrino 2 (or Centrino Duo) which is the same as Centrino, but has a dual core CPU.

Thanks for a trip down memory lane. My T60 and X200s are the coolest laptops I've ever owned. The T450 also served me well, although it felt more like an ultra book than a rugged Thinkpad. They had so much character and I felt like a hacker whenever I pulled them out. Unfortunately the temptations of ARM has made me switch to MacBook Air M1 and it's just far more practical, while being as dev-friendly as Linux. I have to admit it's soulless and feels like an appliance, as watching this video made me miss my ThinkPads.

In the early 90s I became obsessed with the IBM PC's I bought numerous ones from thrift stores usually around $10. I enjoyed getting them working to see what was on the hard drive. Along with other vintage computers XT's, AT's apples, Victors, Commodore 64's Vic 20s and other models I had at least 50 of them and tons of other miscellaneous parts. Then in the 2000s Convinced by friends, I decided to make room in my garage and threw them all away along with the Vintage IBM keyboards, miscellaneous hardware and monitors. Piled them up on the road into a big mound. I basically threw away thousands of dollars. I did keep a couple and ended up selling them a few years ago for around $400 by themselves without a keyboard or monitor. I am still kicking myself. @ModernClassic They were stored in a hot South Florida garage. Before I threw them Away I tried to boot a few of them up to see if they still worked. Everyone I tried Would start to smoke due to Dried out power supply capacitors. That helped in my decision to throw them away. I did try to locate computer clubs on the Internet to see if they wanted to take them off my hands For free and I received no replies. I even had a few IBM luggables and achieved the same smoky results. I should have at least saved the original IBM keyboards. They sell for a pretty penny on ebay.. A young kid and his father came out to buy the mentioned few IBM PC's I kept. I called them later because I had a lot of PC junior Stuff including the aftermarket upgrade modules and other hardware by Racore . I ended up giving all PC junior stuff to them for free. I did keep a small Module I forget its purpose (Maybe an 8088 processor upgrade module?) but I sold it on the PC Junior Form (brutman.com) for $100. They said it was very rare and members were fighting over it. The person that ran the PC junior website indicated he had never saw one in real life. The kid told me later that he took all the PC Junior Stuff to his computer club meeting. Everybody was blown away as they were very rare items and Fellow members were green with envy.

For me the big difference is between normal bias and type 2 tapes. The first is junk. But Type 2 tapes ---CAN BE-- quite good. Assuming a great quality of recording source, a great deck, and a fairly new type 2 tape? They can be quite good. For instance, with some dBX decks you can get up to 110 dB of dynamic range. That is CERTAINLY a level of semi pro audio, rivaling pro audio. It is certainly as good as many reel to reel decks. It is better than VHS Hi-Fi and some other tape formats. The whole tactile feel and act of handling tapes, writing in the menus, recording your favorite bands.... all of it was an experience that those of us who lived thru the era recall with fondness. Was it all that good? Yeah, I think it really was.

Wow, that was a long video to say "It's an unanswerable question.". 😂 Not that I disagree, mind you. While I did know Lenovo bought IBM's entire PC division, I had no idea they kept the division's spirit alive as well! The Lenovo-IBM deal seems like literally the perfect corporate buy-out. Usually you end up hearing how these deals always end up burning one of the companies, if not both, usually the latter. But here, both IBM and Lenovo seemed to have got something out of it, with only the bureaucratics of end-user support seeming to be a mess. Also that X41T seems awesome! I couldn't help but notice the lock switch on the display bezel. With an orientation switch button next to it. Does that thing have an accelerometer? 😳 If not, what does it do?
