These were glow in the dark crystals from green stuff world. They look kind of off white normally I think I just did a thin layer of tesseract glow over them so they still glow through but look a more neon green in light

This doesn't look like a glow at all. It looks like someone sprayed them with green paint. This is a common problem I see when people are painting OSL. You are painting light on faces that are facing AWAY from the light source, i.e. There isno way for light to actually illuminate there the source of light would have to be above the scarabs to illuminate them from on top like you did. At the same time you keep surfaces that directly face the light dark (around the ball/source). This just doesn't parse as light to a human brain.

Would Leadbelcher spray be ok to use instead of the black primer + drybrush leadbelcher step?
@giantsdenminis8727
@giantsdenminis8727 9 ай бұрын
Definitely could go that route, I think the main difference is you would have less black in the recesses and I find the metallic pigments in the sprays tend to be larger than than the pot paints. Though for army painting it would speed things up even further

Thanks! Glad I could be of help. Main take away I had from this project was how much patience is required trying to paint in this style. Between the recess shading and edge highlighting on ridiculous amount of panels on these big boys it takes a very long time. Good luck on yours!

Would you recommend these multiple drybrushes on any unit/dynasty first before using the main colours, as most necrons are gray/silver.
@giantsdenminis8727
@giantsdenminis8727 Жыл бұрын
I think it would be a great way to knock out the 90%+ of the models that will inevitably be silver/metal really quickly then you could paint the dynasty colors over. Though I would definitely do some heavy weathering and/or chipping over any non metallic paint to make it match with the dirty/grimey feel the drybrushing/washing over the black gives to the metallics otherwise it may clash

Great attempt but tbh the crystals take away from the actual models on the bases. It drives your eyes to the crystals straight away when I look at them. Not being mean, just being honest bro. Those crystals are really cool but if you wanted to add them, maybe 3D print terrain or something and put it on there instead of on model bases.

@giantsdenminis8727
@giantsdenminis8727 Жыл бұрын
GW martian iron earth and martian iron crust. To make it a bit more varied in the textures I try to put one of them first over 50% of the base give or take in a varied pattern then while it is still wet out the other one on the rest and wet blend the areas where they touch a little bit. Once they are dry you will have (in my opinion) a more realistic finish between cracks and dirt textures. Once dry just a light dry brush with any light brown or sandy yellow color to add some definition and it makes for a good table top level base.

priming them in leadbelcher and then applying nuln oil over the whole model will give the same effect as priming them in black and drybrushing leadbeclher. it will take less time however.
@cortofredudu
@cortofredudu 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. The effect will be similar but not as dirty and interesting on a textur effect. Dry brush in this case give some nice effects on flat panels that spray can + nuln oil doesn't. Their is still a method to achieve and similar effect with cans, an light zenithal priming with leadbelcher (or any other low-pressure metallic paint spraycan). It's an double speed effect because you can skip the first dry brush stage from the tutorial and the nuln oil stage that you propose. And if you've an air brush, give a try to steel or dark aluminium from Vallejo it achieves the same effect too.

Bit late but a common way to make crystals is to use hotglue sticks cut into crystals then heated very slightly with a lighter to make them clear, then painted over in a clear colour to give it that see-through green glow in the light. Can also use foam or similar materials.
