Jane,hi - I'm late to this one but,it must be a good thing I am occupied with a lot of activity at the moment so I don't have a lot of time free to watch KZfaq. I guess that means I've "got a life"! But I've been looking fwd to this one. At the end you said the points I want to make but I'll give my own version. I learned about home yoghurt making from another KZfaqr,please forgive me giving him a name check on your channel but credit where it's due. It was one of the vlogs of SEAN JAMES CAMERON when he still lived in London. Now,how it is done in the way I learned it is - I put one pint of milk on to heat up. It has to be full milk,but standard supermarket full milk is fine. Heat the milk to just before boiling point then take off and allow to cool to tepid. Then stir in two or three spoonfuls of natural yoghurt from a pot you have bought. I found the only brand that worked for me was Y.. V....y. Works a treat. Most others not. This is the important but. You then pour the liquid into one of those hot food containers that stores sell nowadays.They are vacuum flasks but not tall and narrow but chunky and fat so you can take hot food on your hike. Luckily I had one but had not used it,so it was perfect. It is the layer of insulation that does it,somehow. You then place this in a warm place for 24 hours. In this,my home I have an airing cupboard that I didn't have in my previous home so you'd need an alternative warm place Sure enough next day,yoghurt. I like the tip of adding some evap milk to thicken it. I haven't made any yoghurt for ages but now I feel inspired to. A small pot of that yoghurt makes 3 batches so good value. I said one pint because thats the capacity of my container. My other money saving strategy I'm trying out now ( I need to trim at the mo) is not buying teabags but instead a packet of loose leaf Earl Grey tea. Two reasons,one I like Earl Grey tea and it's drinkable without milk and though I'm not lactose intolerant I think I drink too much and it's affecting my innards. I've read about this and adult people dont need excess milk..plus having to buy milk is both costly and annoying. When you have to go out in the rain just to buy milk. So I'm hoping that will save me a lot. Also notwithstanding jokes about drying the tea bags and using them again I think we are paying for half the tea we are not using so with loose leaf the amount can be moderated more easily And Earl Grey can still be drunk when it's cold so better value. It's a bit sad I think when people are out off making bread or soup or other things because they don't have a this or a that.

Watch out for when they introduce "wealth tax" it's a weasel way to introduce American style Property Tax. If you don't pay Council Tax you may end up in jail but you always own your house. Under the USA system of you get into arrears on your Property Tax the local authority ie the State can take your house off you. (You will own nothing...) Labour politicos on radio are actually gleefully declaring that this will MAKE people in "too big for them" homes ,sell them. The house you worked for 40+ plus years to pay for. Be aware they are using the phrase Wealth Tax to cover up the true nature of what they intend to do).

I was making my yoghurt in the wonderbag. Using longlife milk means no boiling. Just bring to right temperature in microwave then stir in some saved yoghurt and put into wonderbag overnight. I've stopped making yoghurt because milk got so expensive and now Sainsbury's sells 500ml of live yoghurt for 35p. It's not thick but the thin stuff suits me.
@karynbarua19464 күн бұрын
I use a very low-tech method. Heat milk til just bubbles at edges, pour into bowl & allow to cool until I can hold my little finger in it for a count of 10, stir in a spponful of yogurt, cling film the bowl and wrap in a blanket & leave overnight. Next day, line a colander with a cloth,, pour in the yogurt. pop the clingfilm back over the top and allow to strain until desired thickness (anything up to near cheese if you like) - works every time for me :)

Jane I use long life milk as you don't have to bring it to temperature first. I just add a bit of the yogurt I've made to a litre of milk and then I put it in my yogurt maker cold or your instant pot. Much easier and I strain it sometimes usually I have it a bit thinner.

I used to successfully use an insulated mug to make yoghurt using a method similar to that used in the resturant. I also use baby muslins when butter muslin recommended as they are so much easier to find. I would have thought UHT milk may have less lactose as the heating process will alter the sugar. It may be worth trying instead of using more expensive lactose free dairy milk. I now need to find my insulated mug and revisit my youth!

Hi Jane, I don't have an Instant Pot for all the reasons you mentioned and use a bulk electric yogurt maker, I have one from Lakeland that I've had for many years and use Yeo natural yogurt. Judging by the faff, I'd buy UHT instead of boiling and cooling the milk. I use baby muslin cloths for my yogurt straining as they seem to be quite cheap. I make a litre and strain 500 ml of whey out of it so it is very thick, a spoon stands up in it. And yes, you can do it without electricity too just by keeping it warm overnight.

I enjoy your videos very much. I am in Canada and you would be aghast at the price of groceries here. I would say at least 3 times higher. I know there is a difference in our currencies but it is shocking. There are only a few grocery chains that are controlling all the food prices and it is terrible. I don’t know where it is going to end.

I have heard this before. I think the arrival of Lidl and Aldi gave our other supermarkets a kick up the backside. However, the downside of keeping prices low is that farmers don't always get a good deal. Is it the same there?
