The issue is that chain tension from the derailleur is completely redundant thanks to the upper pulley; thus its absolutely critical that the upper pulley guide stops the chain from falling off the pulley. The default design of this part from Trek is pure turd - it needs to completely surround the upper pulley; but the downside of that will be massive drag... The lower guide makes minimal difference to the upper pulley. A horribly flawed design implementation.

I took had way harder crashes as a kid in the 80s and a teen in the 90s, without any protective gear. Hope you never have an actual crash if this is what you consider nasty. 😅
