I think an interesting idea for videos (as I have not seen such content yet), is analyzing different dice systems (1dX, 2dX, 3dX, step dice, different dice pools, and others) and their probabilities and how they affect the players (psychology). Especially for all the different dice pools systems there is not much info on. What is agreed upon is having a success chance of 50-80% depending on what kind of feel you want the players to have (low chance for many opportunities to improve it, or baseline high chance)

Great video! Just some minor mistakes like typos at 3:33 "Polgyon" and 4:10 pyramid shape and not a bell curve (bell curve is 3 dice or more)

TBH there aren't any dnd killers. No matter what you feel about WotC or dnd, realize the majority of people who play dnd aren't even paying attention to controversies, they're just playing the game and will continue to play it, and aren't considering switching. DND is now the Taco Bell of TTRPGs. Everybody buys it because it's everywhere, they know what it is and there's no reason to take a chance on a corner taco stand. WotC will never get another nickel from me, but there aren't enough of us to put the last nail in WotC's coffin because the majority of players - even the ones paying lip service to switching - will ither forget any controversies once a new edition comes out, or they never cared (or know) about controversy to start with.

I thought the "Serpent" was reference to the ancient elder evil Dendar the Night Serpent
@Wiz_and_PippyАй бұрын
Hello @corporateturtle6005 So I looked into this and I wasn't able to find any connections between the Serpent and Dendar. The closest thing might be the Vecnan cults' activity in the Plane of Dreams. The Serpent would appear to be more powerful than Dendar herself, especially if we accept that they are equal in power to the Lady of Pain (and that they are Ancient Brethren with Asmodeus). The Serpent is also much more deity-like in that they do not directly influence the physical world while Dendar appears to have a much more corporeal form as she can appear throughout the Fugue and Gray Wastes and battle adventurers. Though she was trapped at some point as shown in Tomb of Annihilation. Vecna also never seemed to pursue any of the purported goals of Dendar, so if there was an allyship between Vecna and Dendar as the Serpent, Vecna never pursued Dendar's goal of devouring the sun and destroying Abeir-Toril as well as consuming nightmares. Of course the wrinkle in the story might be perfect for a campaign!

If Candela Obscura is any measure of things, then Daggerheart will be a fucking disaster. Shadowdark is great! My former 5E group jumped ship recently and we are having a blast. I have no experience with anything related to Stormlight Archive, but the character sheet didn't give me a good feeling. Gave me strong 3E crunchiness vibes.

Wait, some people are out there saying Stormlight RPG is going to be a D&D killer?...Is the concept of "D&D Killer" changed in the last couple of months? How can an RPG system designed around a specific IP, a world crafted for a saga/series of novels, that is not your stereotypical fantasy ,and has a very different perspective and direction....be comparable to D&D? A lot of these comments are depressing to read. Lots of negativity here. It’s a good video, it’s informative, and while the term “D&D Killer” is divisive, it’s probably there to get people to watch the video. I think TTRPG fans could learn a lot from the games they play, like maybe stop thinking you’re the main character and relax a bit. We’re all in this together and we should be rooting for someone to come by and rival Wizards in any of their spaces. It’ll encourage them to make better stuff and then we’d all win. Anyways, I’m very excited for Daggerheart. Great video.

Kinda like the SRD is to the WotC published books.

The terminology you’re using carries a lot of weight that after watching the video I’m not sure you intend. “X Killer” is probably most recognizably known for being used in reference to World of Warcraft (WoW). When something is called a “WoW Killer”, the term has come to be a mocking term for a mmo that has very little to no reason to play it over WoW except as a means of being a rebound game for people who have left WoW for whatever reason, while maintaining a very similar gameplay style.

why call them d&d killers when d&d will outlive all of them?
@steveholmes116 ай бұрын
Even if one of these does beat the extremely long odds and "Kills" D&D, what happens. Corporate takeover (Probs Hasbro), and the enshittification that implies. All hail the new D&D. Meanwhile back in reality, these are likely to achieve a fraction of D&D's spread, but benefit form their D&D-like selling points. I dislike saying it, but without D&D there's almost no industry, and we'd all be plying monopoly or snap.
@smokedbeefandcheese41446 ай бұрын
@@steveholmes11 I doubt that. There will always be other role-playing games. Because DND cannot properly represent every type of adventure game or even fantasy adventure games. That’s why people make different ones. that’s why people still make art even in general. also what you’re saying only really applies to the western world. In Japan call of Cthulhu is way more prominent than dungeons and dragons. I have also heard in different parts of Europe different things are popular. What you’re saying basically applies only to America and even then it is only speaking to the plurality of RPG gamers in America. There are enough people who are hungry for different stuff to support a healthy independent RPG market. And there are always going to be people making things regardless of monetary compensation because people have an innate drive to create stuff
@steveholmes116 ай бұрын
@@smokedbeefandcheese4144 I'm not sure that contradicts my point. I'll repeat in different words, creating something that's a D&D reskin from a different publishing house seems a fools errand. Nothing to do with other genres of TTRPG. It's that the D&D market has one big player, and a small pool of also-rans (Predominantly pathfinder). The hobby is still at the "Nobody got sacked for buying IBM" stage. If / when it moves on, it won't be to something that's 90% D&D with a different name.

SHADOWDARK is AMAZING - and the rules-light aspect lends itself perfectly for all types of adventure, not just dungeon crawls, for players who want to play without slowing down play by cross-referencing thirty pages of rules for every round of combat or action they want to take!

dungeon crawling gets boring though. games like shadowdark are fine for oneshots but arnt really meant for long term play. in that sense it doesnt really compete with d&d.

Really appreciate you giving an overview of these systems. With so many great RPGs lined up for the next year, I think the tabletop hobby is going to see a renaissance of great post-5e games. D&D on the otherhand I think is due a dip in popularity. I wouldn't go so far as saying D&D is dying... It'll be more like a jail break of players escaping the "D&D dungeon". I would also like to bring another system to your attention if I may. Over the past year, since the OGL saga, I've been working on a system called Freedom Fantasies which takes the 5e chassis and evolves it into a more intuitive system with greater freedom for storytelling outside the fantasy genre. It's also an entirely open access system, where content is actively being uploaded for free access and open licensing (CC 4.0). The alpha development stage is finished and the documents for the beta release are being polished, and the release will include introductory and game design discussion videos on my YT channel. Happy to discuss more with you if you have any interest. 🙂

My players never wanted to switch from 5e, but a few months ago I came across 5B by Dank Dungeons. That was the D&D killer for me. The math works just like 5e, but it gives an awesome BX/BECMI vibe without the race as class and, in my opinion, a much neater magic system.

Honestly if you are dissatisfied or bored with D&D5e, as so many are now days, don't look towards these random indie joes to come up with next great thing in the future.. the lost treasure is in the past, look backward to old school dungeons and dragons. Anything from B/X to BECMI to AD&D is far superior to anything that WoTC or these modern creators have come up with. All these guys use modern designs that just end up sanitizing the game in a way that makes it less satisfying. It's like playing a game with water wings on. The magic was in the past, it was lightning in a bottle and it's not so easily replicated. Just play AD&D, it's so fucking good and in my books it still hasn't been anywhere near surpassed since.
