I've owned 4 porsche's, and I regret selling my 86 928S the most. A word of caution: check the rubber grommet that feeds the cable thru the transmission tunnel to the O2 sensor. It sits directly above the catalytic converter and gets dried out. It's also an infused wire, and can start an electrical fire if it shorts out. Ask me how I know.😢

Thanks for commenting, Ken! I think there’s just one way to overcome the loss of four Porsches, get a fifth one. Thanks for the word of caution! I guess I haven’t even looked whether my car has a catalytic converter, but likely, 85 in Spain, she doesn’t.

Great assessment of the 1977 911S. Mine was in Minerva Blue and the sound in second and third gear at red line was to die for. I got it when it had 10k on the odometer and all the needed updates were already done. It never gave me any problems and I still regret selling it due to a growing family. The narrow body and silver Fuchs wheels looked so good on that car.

I believe that the car painters that performed your mirror work went to the same school that the car painters/repairers that performed the wiring work on my Alfa 156 V6 - which had in the past, under a previous owner, had suffered a wiring fire at the rear. In short, atrocious work in 'splicing in' a replacement portion of the wiring loom that consisted of about 20 wires - that in the end unleashed a host of gremlins that required addtional 'jumper wires' (of course all coloured black) to be 'spliced in' at different points of the wring harness. However, they were at least able to perform the circa 20+ twisted cable connections - i.e. no crimping or soldering 'here' - using the same colours - so I can conclude that the painters/repairers were at the very least not colour blind. Like you, I hope they turn up the heat to maximum when they finally make it to their final resting place in hell.

I can feel your pain, mate. I hope you don’t mind me saying that it’s kind of good to read that for you know a problem shared is a problem halved. I had a V6 156 Sportwagon myself, silver exterior, saddle leather momo interior. If I had the chance to buy it back, I would.

@@GreasyFingers The Alfa 156 V6 has certainly created some headaches, and it's somewhat consoling when others have encountered similar poor workmanship issues on their cars. In my case, all is forgiven when I hear the delightful and sonorous Busso V6 engine in full flight. I'm so smitten that I'm now in a 'chase' to find an unmolestered version of its bigger brother - the Alfa 156 GTA - which given its age is somewhat challenging. As in your case, I'd dearly love a 156 GTA Sportswagon - however these were not imported to Australia - so a sedan will have to do.

My word these 928's are complex things. I don't think i'll be swapping my 944 for one soon. But although they are perhaps a little over-engineered, you can't help but love them and I am so glad you have taken this on. Cannot wait for part 3. I started restoring my 944 during lockdown and finally got an MOT on April the 19th. If I bought a 928 to restore tomorrow, I would probably finish on April the 19th 2032 - seen as they are doubly complex (if I wasn't made bankrupt beforehand). Keep up the good work and i'll keep learning too!

@@GreasyFingers There is a red one in America! I am a bit of a puritan (not in the Presbyterian sense :) ) and I have endeavoured to keep mine original at every stage when possible - as long as the PET doesn't throw up 'NLA' and you can't find a replacement on Fleabay, or at the breakers. It's a lot easier and cheaper to modify. Too many classics are modified - even at a higher level like the Gunther works 993, the Singer 911's etc. Why? Travesties. So I enjoy your restorations because you are getting the cars back to what they must have been like when they left the factory. I've had an inkling of that now that 95% of the mechanical work is done with it's new bushing all round and the L Jetronic delivering, the tall but slick gear change. It's driving like it's meant to. Delete the problematic MAF, replace the torsion bars with coil overs, replace with gas struts, stick a short shift linkage in, over cam the engine, re-map the ECU, make it go faster... and in that process, you loose the soul within that was inexplicably Porsche; the thing you couldn't put your finger on because Porsche's are greater than the sum of all their parts and the only cars I have ever owned that are positively inexplicable. That complexity is what makes them and gives us headaches as you try to reverse the accumulated neglect and abuse. I wish you luck on this 928 journey.
