Awesome! Love the educational Ryo videos :D The whole film simulations feature was one of the main things that drew me to switch to fujifilm, and remain one of the most fun things to play around with my cameras, so I can spend more time with the camera and taking photos, instead of taking a few photos then plenty of time editing in post. Learning about the stocks' background is awesome, really appreciate it Ryo! I have a roll of Superia 400 I still gotta mail out to develop XD But as for the film simulations, my personal favorite on 4th gen fujifilm cameras is the Classic Chrome. I learned to create my own recipes from Fuji X Weekly, so I made my own colorful version of Classic Chrome for street photography, and a super contrasty one for cloud photography. Would you say that the Reala is your favorite for time being?

Your welcome I thought people would be better off learning something maybe about the history about the film stock instead of just going out and shoot with it since there is always a reason for why every single film stock was released. And understanding the intentions of the film stock we can further can utilize it to the fullest potential. I have been shooting with Nostalgic Neg upon recently before Reala Ace was released and I have to admit it really reminds me of Superia 400 not buttery smooth as Nostalgic/Classic Neg but has this nostalgic vibe which the green is more apparent and clean but not as super clean like Proviabwhich everything looks prestine...and it does really nice contrast especially the highlights what we naturally see with our eyes. I think I am going to stick with Reala Ace since it's probably a film stock that represents Fujifilms 35 format film negatives history that was dedicated towards the consumers.

@RM.TokyoPhotographer
@RM.TokyoPhotographer 4 күн бұрын
oh yeah I completely forgot that there are alot of people who comment using as a feet and unfortuantly I have to admit this is not for monopod feet since it doesnt have the stability its like 100% more like for table tripod... if I was going to use as a feet for monopod. I would highly suggest the Leofoto VD03 series which are more stable and I recently tested within store the most stability wise (it can stand stable without touching) is the Libec TH-M series unfortunatly an all in one solution where the feets attached to the monopod. but a little bit bulkier. so hopefully i made some contribution/help

Hi Ryu, i am traveling to Japan in September / October and was wondering how the prices have developed recently with fuji producing some film and kodak ramping up production. Is it possible to find some "cheap"-ish 35mm colour film in Tokyo right now? I don't need Portra or other fancy stuff, any cheap 200 ISO film like kodak gold 200 or local alternatives are fine. Is there any stock available for let's say less than 2000 yen? I know that B/W film can be had much cheaper there, but I really don't like B/W for my purposes. Thank you so much!

Oh sweet your coming this year? 👍 The Kodak Gold 200 is roughly 1980yen 15$ Colorplus 1780yen 12-13$ in most stores. I think those two are the cheapest in terms of price the Fujicolor 100 is similar priced as Colorplus and Superia 400 which was discontinued recently replaced by Fuji 400 is same as Kodak Gold 200 It's unfortunate that there are no films priced less than 1,500yen (12$) nowadays in Tokyo/Japan

Hi Ryo, this was very helpful as I am browsing net to pick my first medium format. I have used some plastic cameras as well but as I have never seen this camera in real, how is the built quality of this unit? When you lift it up it looks very light and the modular parts seems to be light weight.
@RM.TokyoPhotographer
@RM.TokyoPhotographer 12 күн бұрын
If you ever used any camera like the Nikon F3 the Mamiya 1000s shares similar vibe/characteristics such they share similar metal alloy feels like a brick and the Mamiya 645 like the Mamiya 7 share a characteristic of having a plastically outer shell. And weight wise the Super is a little lighter but not that significant while the Mamiya 1000s feels much more solid like a Tank. Either one will not disappoint. I wanted to change backs so if I have the opportunity shoot b/w and color negatives at the exact same location. But if loading time doesn't matter the 1000s is the bang for the buck. For the modular parts the viewfinder is definitely lighter on the super than the 1000s while I don't own the waist finder for super but had for 1000s they look identical The only issue might be the overall cost when trying to get the accessories like the pentaprism since they tend to be much expensive than the 1000s

I'm a woman and I have nightmare of using big bag to accomodate my M1 MacBook Air, what do you think about the 6L version of it? If I flaten out the main compartment, will it fit? Thanks for reaching out to me. To be honest back then I had the V1 which fits my 13.3 M1 MacBook Air without any problems. I haven't had the opportunity to try the 6L and 10L (V2) But from my research on the Japanese official distributor at the bottom the 6L seems to accommodate till the ipad pro 11inch while the 10L accommodates up to the 14inchmacbook pro and 12.9inch ipad pro .. I'm guessing the V1=V2 10L (but it's kinda bit larger than V1) Honesty this is my biased opinion but lugging a 13.3 M1 Air had strain on my shoulder since the weight isn't well balanced when having heavier equips with laptop.... Recently my V1 zipper broke down on me and instead of going to V2 I went back to my Manfrotto Backpack Advance Series which alleviated my shoulder. Also another advice the 10L seems too big sideways in my eyes not balanced well unless your a really tall person (I'm a short 5ft munchkin) So hopefully I made some help to you Link sekido-rc.com/?pid=178925402&srsltid=AfmBOoqjTWC4EIR3neaY1OJIlODeNHPc6xj2ltw-urK5BRaxuq4Pjrw0

Appreciate these camera shop visits, I'll be visiting Tokyo in late November and really want dedicate a carry on for bringing back mint vintage cameras for shooting. From what the consensus says, cameras in Japanese shops aren't cheaper than what I can find here in the US (eBay), but being able to see/hold cameras before buying, knowing they're in great condition, and just the experience of shopping in person, I'd say, is half the fun. Are there any "must visit" shops you'd recommend? I'm interested in picking up a rangefinder (not m6) and a medium format camera while I'm there (maybe the gw690!)

I am planning to get one on ebay for these vintage tripods. Have you ever used it for long exposure? I am gonna be using a film camera just how you mounted it so I am asking if it was stable enough for your usage
@RM.TokyoPhotographer
@RM.TokyoPhotographer 20 күн бұрын
Honesty as a working professional in studio, I highly suggest getting a more modern tripod like Benro, Manfrotto, Leofoto, etc since the modern tripods are built better in terms of shock absorbing the camera shake. Better materials magnesium alloy/carbon/aluminum Older tripods the one I mentioned in this video is really brittle and I wouldn't take it to any trips unfortunately. Since it wobbles. But this will really depend how heavy your camera is 35mm/Medium format/Large format most tripod manufacturer indicate how much payload the tripod can hold which is BS (mostly half what they indicate) For mounting older tripods don't have a quick release plates so I would purchase a Arca Swiss compatible plate and quick release have it screwed on if I want to quickly remove and place my camera. Hope I made some help:)

Hi @RM.TokyoPhotographer . Thanks for this review. I actually had the same Leofoto LX-254CT+XB32 travel tripod. But I sold it because I realized that I wasn't really using it that much because, for me, it was still big, bulky and a bit heavy. So, rather than having it collect dust, I sold it at a very good price. Yet, I think I still need a tripod but this time it ought to be one that will give me motivation to bring it along with me during my travels. Then I noticed that you mentioned that there were failed tripod purchases you did before settling on the LX-254CT. Two of these were my considerations for replacement: (1) The Ulanzi Coman Zeroy Y and; (2) Leofoto LX-224CT. Others I'm taking into consideration would be- (3) Leofoto LY-224C+LH-25R; (4) FotoPro X-Aircross 3 (5) Sirui Traveller X-I (or X-II) Perhaps you've done your research and came across the others I listed and would gladly listen to your opinions about them especially why you crossed them out. Like you, I'm using Fujifilm gear and most of them are compact in size (XT3, X100v, XF 16/1.4, XF 27/2.8ii, XF 35/2.0, XF 50/2.0). I also have an Insta360 Ace Pro. I actually never owned a Makina67 wish I had but I can't say much but the reel itself is same across manufacturers so it's probably highly likely the amount of friction applied to the rollers the top and bottom of the focal plane might be too great so it stops the film from advancing...as a last resort if my finger fits where the film sticks out of the reel that passes through I pull extra hard so it catches but that rarely happens

I love the fact that the Mamiya has a removable lens and waist level view finder but the GW is pretty (lol) and is closer to my other cameras in shooting style. What would you advise?
@RM.TokyoPhotographer
@RM.TokyoPhotographer Ай бұрын
That's a tough question I purchased both since they basically cover the negatives that each camera have less shots the 1000s covers, interchangable lenses. While the GW690 is quicker to reload the film due to the Rangefinder/SLR loading style. One is Mechanical while other is electronic. I picked up the GW690 since it was 1/5th price of the Mamiya 7 while the Mamiya 645 1000s was like half the price of GW690...either way they are great cameras and if budget is concern (initial purchase long term cost film) the 1000s is cost effective. The GW690 is more of a camera that if you know what specific subject/project you want to work on it's a great camera, but on days I don't know what I'm shooting it's burning cash. 😂 So I use the Mamiya (when going to areas I have no clue) hope it helps either one won't disappoint but the GW690 lense is fixed so you are gonna either love it or hate the 39mm focal length If you have a zoom lense on digital tape 39/40mm focal length and try shooting it to get a feel of the that focal length it might be a great practice

@@RM.TokyoPhotographer I appreciate the input, Ryo. Still toiling with the idea of getting the GW but, I came across another camera that is interesting. The Bronica S2A. Seems to have a good reputation and it’s got Nikon glass, I love my Nikon glass. Decisions, decisions lol

Weirdly my local camera store does sell new cable releases but only sells Promaster Brand and its a 50cm length. I don't do too much long exposure so I've had mine for years, I tend to shoot most my film during the day and handheld, I will tripod and cable for landscapes bc of the higher fstop.

There are a couple of Chinese companies producing them I'm not sure if the film camera shop purchased from them there a fair amount of shops that finds dead stock from Japan but those are getting harder to find. When I do long exposures I do it throughout the night so maybe I bend it too much and add too much strain to the spring or I'm mostly unlucky but thankfully it's not stupidly expensive new hehe

I bought the previous version and found it to be wildly innacurate. I stuck to my Sekonic meter (which is annoying for the same reasons that you shared). The XH-2 is supposed to be more accurate and more stable in the readings. Did you actually check it against your Sekonic meter? I would love to buy one but I don't want to waste my money again.

It's unfortunate to hear since I never used the previous generations and from experience the second third generation is suppose to be better but unfortunately I don't have anything to compare and so far it's not super accurate like the Sekonic due to price difference and the sensor it uses but. To be truthful the one mine in particular seems to underexposed roughly 1/3 of sekonic however I only tried it during the day and night I mostly use Sekonic. If you frequently shoot in darker environment the Sekonic is much more inefficient but if you shoot mostly during the day with lots of sunlight or a rather bright partly cloudy day this might work well

My Fuji X100T accepts this type cable release. I got the 40cm one and it was great for long exposure night photography.

Thanks for commenting 😁 From what I experienced the JJC 70cm in my mind seems longer than I anticipated...and the 40cm is probably will fit 95% of most ppls need. Since it's much more compact and easier to carry around

I'm also looking for these in 49mm. Specially the Alps Punch. Got a recomendation from a friend to use Waku Waku Mono site to import it to Mexico, but I can't find it anywhere :( Also checked Mercari and most are sold, need some help here. Btw, really awesome and informative video. Greetings from Mexico ^_^

Thanks for letting me know I actually contacted Marumi and they don't have an worldwide online site I'm like wtf...so I might try making some sort of site to sell stuff for ppl outside Japan....out of curiosity the Mercari site outside Japan is it linked to the local Mercari site in Japan? If you have time can you check if the 49mm Alps punch shows on the version you are using if the one sold for 4,900yen appears? If it does I could go out and buy it and list it there.

@@RM.TokyoPhotographer I'm interested as well. Marumi should raise visibility on these filters worldwide. From personal experience, I use this type of filters (Along with other styles such as the Chromoblend Series from Vivitar, Softnet Series from Tiffen, Spectral Filters from Hoya, Kenko Nostaltones, etc) and they are a valuable asset in photography and filmmaking, although terribly underlooked. The problem comes from the "I'll color-grade it in post" mindset combined with the perception that these type filters are suited for a more artistic/relaxed style compared to the clinical look we tend to get from modern, corrected optics. Marumi, as you said, answered Kenko Nostaltone's with a truly unique product which adds character and an organic element to the images without the extra step in post, and -If you ask me- I'd rather spend time behind the shutter than in front of a PC 😅 There are ways to get a similar look? Maybe, but nothing comes close to what this filter does -Take it from someone who even experiments with telescope filters for street photography or grabs old-stock filters like a Kenko TV-CC and sandwiches a stocking to get a DIY Tiffen Softnet Skintone Filter. You should do a "Weird Filter Section" on your channel Ryo ^_^ Keep up the good work!

$19.95 kit on Amazon in the US.

It's 19.95 in the US? But considering there's that chance of getting the exactly the same in a different box it might be wiser to just getting the set instead of individual purchases
