When I started playing Cello I didn't buy one for thousands of dollars. I bought one from Amazon for about 200. I still use it as my practice instrument to this day. When learning or thinking of getting into playing an instrument you shouldn't buy one for thousands of dollars. You never know if it will stick with you. If you do stick with it and get serious, then later on you can save for a better one.

There is also variation between different manufacturers. One cheap handpan is not going to be the same as another, so be very careful.

Most Amazon pans are NOT from the actual maker/company. They were purchased from factory/maker/contractor(s). As I mentioned in the video....factory will sell the sub par/defects/leftover(that doesn't pass quality control) handpans to resellers(AMAZON) they go by grade B, BB,A,AA etc. Usually they are grade C-B.

Hi, Max & Chloe, First few views and comment on your channel for me! Might I add that I'm glad to have found you! Grand stuff, I do say! Regarding the content of the video and the differences heard/perceived in the comparison: Upon looking for examples of the cheaper handpans that are becoming readily available, and the relating dubiousness that such entails, I followed a comment and found this video. The only amz/tem/ali example/recording, of which I've found that has removed the rubber rim protector... There's a huge difference between the two, in my humble, honest, minimally learned, opinion. Enough so that you might well have just aided in the conformation that I'd be content with a factory-made, mass-produced handpan to commence my journey into a realm, that'd otherwise be at present a somewhat expenisvely uncertain and alas, financially out of reach journey for me! If I was to recieve an unblemished, tuned pan from one of the import sites that sounds as this one does, I certainly wouldn't regret the purchase, regardless of being limited to one scale, compromising of 10 notes and however many chords that two hands has the potential to make! The overall change/contrast of the sounds envolope (ie. attack/sustain/decay) is definitely noticeable. The second, de-rubbered rim, being a more postive, favourable, reasurring, meditive factor might I add! Do I sense slightly more overtone/harmoic register? There's certsinly more 'colour'/brightness, and the gentle, immersive soundscape that one would wish to frequent. I'm only observing and listening through a (few year old flagship) Samsung and it's in built Dolby Atmos speaker and could literally feel the soundwave difference in my fingertips! Upon further reflection: I did notice that your playing naturaly switched up a level once you'd removed the rubber and sample a few notes/percusive techniques. Also, upon finishing the second sound deml, the little "hm!" of which you expressed was defiantly perceivable a pleasant suprise! Im conclusion: I don't believe I'd have been able to tell the difference between the mass produced being demonstrated and a more expensive handcrafted one. At least listening to a recording through a handheld device, that is. The rubber rim protector definitely provides a muting, 'flattening' effect and I can only presume that they're intended for shipping purposes. Out of curiosity: Do the artisans handmade handpans typically come shipped with them? I do really want to sample a cheaper handpan now, I think that it'd be a good entry-point for a novice pauper such as myself! Thank you for your video(s), skill, time and useful insight! I look forward to more of your appeasing

Good Morning ! and a big HELLO! Thank you for your comments! Inexpensive handpans has definitely changed many people's perspectives. Production and quality has definitely improved - A LOT. All said, a lot of people especially the "handpan masters" still labelled these inexpensive handpans- a stigma- as cheap toys. AND utterly, looked down upon. Frowned- in so many words....... I would love to see everyone owning a high quality, artisan handpan. Hand made, blood , sweat and tears- and LOVE -- involved in the process of making it. In the real world...and reality, Not everyone can afford that, or willing to. In the term of comparison. YES, there are and will be subtle(or many) differences between artisan(handmade) and machine made(mass produced) Handpans. Buying from site like AMAZON....and only through Amazon PRIME sellers is the only method I wd recommend buying from. Massed drums....and especially many resellers- buys theirs from factories. To be able to SELL as the cheapest price, they purchased the lowest grade rejects or what the factory deemed damaged(or unsellable to their standard) You can definitely hear the differences when you play the artisan & the mass produced side by side. It may be subtle....but definitely, noticeable. As you mentioned, the ADSR.... The massed produced drums usually will have shorter decay and sustain.Then we move forward to how long will these massed pan hold their tuning, their stability. I had mine for a little over 4 years now(my Asteman)....and the notes are all still in tune. And that, was being played a lot- by other adults and children. The rubber rim- so far to my knowledge- that all massed drums comes with it. on one of my student's drum, the sides or edges wasn't finished properly and was...kinda sharp. Hence, the rubber band- to protect users. And...and but yes, removing it does opened up the harmonics and sustain quite a bit. Then again, to some....they might prefer a more muted, porcelain-like sounds. Subjective to all. Conclusion......Get what you can afford. Enjoy what you "can" have. While I wholeheartedly would love for everyone to own and play an artisan pan, it's not reality to many. Enjoy the journey, YOUR journey. Have a blessed day.

I have the same tongue drum. I do not agree with your C and D explanation. C and D nearly almost means C scale and D scale. Your Hluru 14 tone drum has f(4‘), g (5‘), a (6‘), b (7‘), c’ (1), d’ (2), e’ (3), f’ (4), g’ (5), a’ (6), h’ (7), c“ (1“), d“ (2“) e“ (3“). That is true C scale. So it begins with "f".There are also many 15 tones C scale tongue drums and they will beginn with e(3'), f(4') and so on. If it was a D scale, it would begin with g @3' or f#/fis @4' (depending if you have a 14 or 15 tone drum). Please use a chromatic tuner (e.g. soundcorset app for Android) and you will see the difference
@maxandchloemeditation
@maxandchloemeditation 19 күн бұрын
And I totally agree with you 100%! In music theory, the D scale(D major) will have 2 #s. I am referring to HOW these mass produced tongue drums are labeled and being sold on Amazon. I played on a drum that one of my student got from Amazon, the #1 tongue is a D, #2 tongue in an E! So these non musical company labeled their drum on which tongue they labeled as #1! In music theory, it’s a C major drum but labeled by factory as a D drum. That’s the confusing part with a lot of these drums that are being sold on Amazon. All said, it’s super confusing because they are a few true D drums but they never said whether it’s a D major or D minor. I only encountered 1 Amazon drum- with a D engraved at the bottom- and it was a D minor.

GM. Ask yourself, what's my purpose of getting a tongue drum? If its to learn how to play with others or along with (most) popular music.....then more notes/tongues the merrier. Think of diatonic scale---or all white keys on the piano......whether it be 10 notes/tongues.....or its better to have more. if it's 15 notes....then you have 2 full octaves....

GM! The Panda drum is a good drum. Its still a Chinese brand but it's an AAA grade tongue drum with excellent quality control (hence the higher price). To be honest-and to save some money......, I wouldn't "hesitate" to buy a drum from Amazon......as long as it's from a Prime seller- so you won't have problem(s) returning it if its not in tune. In the end, it all comes down to- WHAT AND WHY DO YOU WANT THE DRUM FOR? To learn to play? Play along/ or to/with popular music? Or for self? meditation? If you want to learn to "play" and since you are already familiar with piano, guitar etc......its easier to adjust (diatonic scale in tongue drum). Artisan drums will come in their specified/available scale- mean additional adjustment you to learn/ adapt to the specific scale(s).Example, D minor, F Pygmy etc. Have a great day!

I work at a school for children with multiple and severe disabilities. I use pentatonic tongue drums for the simple reason that you "can't play wrong notes". Very much - as you say- almost for meditation rather than formal teaching. The kids (3-19yo) love the sessions, even ADHD kids calm down, are attentive and less disruptive for the rest of the day.

I don’t understand how they can make a decent hand pan for $200 but it costs thousands for an actual good one.
@maxandchloemeditation
@maxandchloemeditation Ай бұрын
Gm! Well, we are somewhat comparing apples and oranges. Handpans are relatively a new instrument. Same with any musical instruments when they are first “created”- every single one of them were made by hands, not machines- hence the term massed production. Making a handpans by hands are tedious work. Beside having the best material, each of the notes has to be tuned by hammering. So you are talking about hours upon hours of labor- to perfection. Each hand crafted Handpan will receive about 10000 plus hammering time. The maker also has to be skilled tuners. So said, lots of time and expertise put into making ONE Handpan. Imagine, all those hours spent- and the Handpan did not come out right- that goes down the drain. As technology evolved, machines are used to make these handpans- example; the Chinese brand-Asteman etc. they are prefabricated, then tuned. Corners were cut- that’s why most don’t sound as good as an artisan Handpan. So, it’s subjective in so many words. A handmade Martin guitar will be in the thousands and mass produced versions will be in the low hundreds. Have an awesome day!

Great harmonics.....excellent playability....and compact! I kinda, have to disagree with you on the sounds- I think that the Nova is perfect. It can definitely hold its weight in compare to the "big boys". The Nova has its own unique sounds. Maybe NOT as bright - which I prefer sometimes. To me, it is between the Rav, Art Quint meets Pulsar- then raised by Guda.<<--- my silly terminology? have an awesome day!
