I saw her in August of that same year at the Cambridge Folk Fest. I was leaping up and down in the second row and shouting lots of encouragement, and she looked directly at me when she thanked the audience that night... In subsequent years I wondered if I'd imagined it, but chanced upon a copy of her autobiography and she in fact stated that she always tends to pick someone who's contributed to the night to address her audience remarks to, and knew I'd not been mistaken. The sadly now departed Dr John did the warm up act for her, and I never found anyone who could energise an audience like him.

She wrote this about her sister (Mimi) and her short-lived brother in law (Richard Farina, dead via motorcycle crash at age 29) - Mimi eventually found love again, and Joan later changed the lyrics when her sister succumbed to cancer, presumably reuniting with her lover in the afterlife.
