I work at a public health department and we handle rabies. Rabies is 100% fatal, but it’s very rare in humans in the US. If you get bit by an animal, not only bats, and you can’t confirm it’s had a rabies vaccine (most dogs and a lot of cats have had them) call your local health department. If you can catch the animal, great. They’ll remove its head and test it for rabies. If you can’t or don’t want the animal to lose its head then you will need rabies post exposure shots. There’s a whole bunch of them and they’re painful so just try to avoid petting animals you don’t know. I don’t even pet cats on the sidewalk anymore because I don’t want to risk it.
