LOL, I’m hoping my POTA 20 gets here soon so I can try it with those. I wish the spike was a little longer and stronger, especially with some of the ground up here, but they do the trick, specially when I’m leaning a mast in a tree or using the rubber wire to secure it to a post.

If you are flying with it remember to put all your sharp objects in one location so you can put them in checked luggage. Otherwise TSA may get some new mult-i-tools and knives. 73

I just don’t understand how this is so much better. The computer, cables, and that honking big choke on the interconnect cable. I just turn on my HT, key mic, talk no big honking choke on the mic cable.

Winlink is not my favorite mode/activity, but I try to practice regularly since I see value in it. As for the chokes, my experience, along with some others, is that it’s sensitive to RFI. The cheap laptop probably is too. Choking the cables has helped mitigate that though.

@@MikeN2MAK I knew what the chokes were for and why they’re there. My point was an HT going through a repeater to relay info is a lot less bulky and cumbersome that dragging along a laptop and a bunch of cables. It was a great demonstration though of what can be done, it’s just not my cup of tea.

Thanks for the sub! 20m and 40m are great bands and there’s plenty of activity. But there’s other options too, which can be less crowded and a great way to try different antennas.

Hey guys, I’m enjoying the show. I wanted to chime in on Marvin’s comment on the battery size and TSA. I fly regularly with my rig so I keep up with the info. There’s more to the rule he found. There’s rules for <100Wh and another set of rules for 101Wh-160Wh. The website currently states you can carry on up to 2x batteries between 101Wh-160Wh. Link below. sounds way better than side band. God I hate listening to side band audio. I honestly didnt know there was even AM lower than 27mhz, and since Im only a tech, i never could use the AM part of 10 meters. (couldnt pass above 5wpm to same my rear) 73 N9IZX

Price can definitely be a factor. It’s good that Yaesu dropped the price on the 710 this past year, which makes it much more competitive and appealing.

I was using the Mercury linked dipole I build with the kit from Coffee & Ham Radios. It was probably up around 25-30 feet on the mast and running east-west. Thanks for watching!

It’s funny because this all started with Shane making a comment about it on Clubhouse. Whether it’s AM, CW, Meshtastic, microwave bands, whatever, it’s always good to see others trying new and different things. That’s what the hobby is about.

I got 31 in the log in an hour, which is the most I've ever done on AM. It's tended to be a challenge in the past, both finding an open frequency with enough space, and getting contacts. But you never know how it'll go unless you give it a shot. Thanks for watching!!

When I was a teenager, my dad had a shortwave radio on the kitchen table and we would listen to all the 80 meter AM boat anchor guys every night (W2VJZ, WA1HLR, etc...). After I got licensed, I've never really made an AM contact because I always felt it was reserved for the guys running "real" radios. It looks like you had some fun with it and makes me want to give it a try sometime.

I've had a good experience with the ICOM 7300. I'm sure the modern rigs aren't as ideal for it as older ones, but it's still fun to try some of the time. I do want to give AM a shot on 10m and 6m sometime, which I think might be really interesting with an opening. Thanks for watching!

De KB8UGP Gary in Enterprise WV I worked a lot of station on AM with My Xiegu G90 with a EFLW 15 to 20 watts always get a good report I think it fun to work AM just to see Who is out there still using the old mode so good DX and God Bless America 73

It’s definitely been fun to try and it’s nice to see that it’s encouraging others. The G90 was my first radio but I’ve never did AM with it, since I was so new to ham radio. I have a 705 now, but that’ll only do 2.5W on AM, so I’ll stick to the 7300, LOL.

Nice job Mike ! Early spring I got some 10 meter AM on POTA . I got a 10 meter repeater aw well but contact does not count POTA but was fun. I have done 2 meter AM and SSB with some FT8 but not POTA . I have done some 160 meter AM in the winter a few years back. that a night band. AM/FM will take some battery power . FT8 does as well. nice pics of park. NY has very nice parks. 73

Awesome! I’ve been wanting to try 10m AM. I think that’d be fun. I’m curious how it gets out when the band is open. I’ve done very little AM on the high bands but will definitely try it on 6m if I’m out during an opening.

All it takes is just the push of a button, LOL. I get that it’s not efficient and takes a lot of bandwidth, but it can be fun to try once in a while. Hopefully others seeing it will encourage more to try it out.
