Im confused. The first upper harmony is sang by lower harmony?

You have a right to be confused! I couldn’t figure out the best way to label this back when I put it up. The first upper harmony for the verse, in this key, would be best to be sung by a male singer who also sings the other lower harmonies in the other sections. The 2nd upper harmony for the verse (which I often now call “lower harmony 8va+” or “alto”) would be ideal for an alto female singer in this key. But, depending on the key and vocal range of the person singing, you can adjust.

One more question. I know you did the video on how to use numbers. It was super informative but still going to take some practice. I’m self taught on piano and acoustic. Played by ear growing up, but then learned chords. Playing by ears a blessing and a curse. I was asked to sing lower harmony for this song in the original key tomorrow, but I noticed this tutorial is not in the original key so I’ve been practicing wrong. I can pick it up much better by ear at this point. Any suggestions ? it’s so much easier for me to hear it but it’s a lot harder to find a lower harmony track for songs than it is to learn how to read numbers at this point

Nate, thank so much for these!!! They are going to inspire my little grandson's so much! And. They are going to inspire my personal worship time at home! Today, I watched the Harmony rounds. After watching your basics of breathing and posture with the oldest, Alex. He listened to you, attentively. I knew he would. As he needs men in his life. He seemed to like the idea of improving his skill to offer it to God. He sat out of the singing part, but I watched his face as you and I sang , harmonizing, and that made him sit up and take notice. About an hour ago. After he went ho!me, I watched Harmony Challenge 5 with I surrender all, and jumped in, cause that's one I do use harmonies with regularly, and now, I can't wait to let the boys jump in, learn parts and sing on their first day out of school. Thank you again for doing such a blessed work.

Ive noticed jazz/blues/soul singers bend the pitch a lot but they never sound out of tune. Also, when they add vibrato. Any idea what's happening there? I can't hold a note on the same pitch for very long.

Good thoughts. Yes, doing stylistic scoops and slides sounds good! In that case, the singer is still very accurate with the main center of the pitch, but will just scoop into or out of it. As for vibrato, when sung “in tune” the pitch oscillates above and below the center of the pitch at relatively equal amounts. Our ear then naturally hears the “average” or the tonal center of the vibrato. If one’s vibrato is too “wide” this is when it can sound unnatural if overdone (because the pitch oscillations are too extreme). But, a natural vibrato that occurs with good technique is totally acceptable and if anything it can often sound more “in tune” than singing with no vibrato…

Can you do a video of what to sing if you have 5 or more background vocals in your team. Do they all need to be singing different harmonies? The target is modern harmony sound and not the traditional choir sound..

Love that topic! I’ll jot down that video idea. My suggestion is that they don’t all need to be singing a different harmony. Probably have the melody doubled as the first thing. If you have too many harmony parts doubled, I think the sound can get out of balance. So, I would advise keeping the melody very prominent, and then allowing a few of the voices to harmonize in tasteful spots and creating the desired sound.
