@@dante_dagger Then I will wait eagerly for more of such contents from you. Funeral doom is a niche genre that is a fact, but its audience is very much dedicated; So you can imagine the value of your content on this very style. By the way, I've recently been listening to a band called désespéré if I'm typing it correctly. I think it could fit into the torture doom description. Dunno why I brought up but I guess I'm excited to share with a seasoned ear of the style. Cheers!

It’s interesting that otesanek has members who would go on to become Pissgrave. Pretty sure that they even dedicated their second album to the drummer of otesanek who died a couple of years before it came out. Those guys are great at making depressing pissed off extreem metal

Hi, I’m Dave - I played piano and a smattering of other instruments on this album. I’d honestly not thought about Overland for a long time. It’s both surreal and moving to see it get all this attention here. The bad news is that, like Joe (@joetiltman9371), I have no undamaged copy of the album. The version I own is now totally unplayable due to the damage. The good news is that I can explain quite a lot about this album - at least from my own perspective - and provide links to some adjacent recordings (though they are themselves sometimes quite damaged). Alex and I went to school together in Bristol (UK) and had various musical endeavours in the late 1990s / early 2000s. In the autumn of 1999 we spent a weekend at a friend’s house in the Hotwells area of Bristol, recording a rough early version of what would eventually become ‘Traces of Yesterdays’. The band line up and track listing is quite different. Alongside myself were Effie (vocals), Chloe (cello), and Will (harp). The copy I now have on cassette is extremely damaged. Here’s a link to early versions of ‘Softly, But As Bells’ and ‘Tonight Won’t Be Like Any Other Night’: soundcloud.com/david-tollerton/sets/1999-pre-overland-tracks-from-damaged-cassette?si=9de205b672b64b489238145eda8a2173& In the autumn of 2000 into early 2001, Alex and I began holding band practices with Joe (bass) and Jane (vocals / violin) and this eventually became ‘Traces of Yesterdays’. It was recorded partly at Dartington College (because of Joe’s connection with Drew @SmartStr33t) and at a recording studio in the St George area of Bristol. The tracks tend to fall into two types: (i) tracks where my piano material formed the foundation and other elements were added on top of it (like ‘Softly, But As Bells’ and ‘Starlet’) or (ii) tracks where Alex’s guitar composition formed the basis of the song (like ‘Hymn’ and ‘We Scatter to the Corners’). Alex wrote all of the lyrics and is the male vocalist who can be heard on the surviving tracks. In 2002 Alex and I did discuss producing more Overland music. For my part, the piano elements that could have become the basis of some tracks are available here: soundcloud.com/david-tollerton/sets/piano-tracks-linked-with-further-overland-album?si=1d244934e1944f58bf326fece781715c&. The ‘Overland treatment’ of these five tracks would likely have involved use of effects-heavy guitar, violin/cello, and ethereal vocals laid over the top. I also have some (mildly damaged) recordings of demos I created in late 2001, which would have fed into the mix of possibilities for this second album: soundcloud.com/david-tollerton/sets/overland-style-recordings-from-late-2001?si=893cff6377f34673b81cf519dbac7b0a&. All of the provisional instrumentalization and vocals are my own (with an additional female vocalist briefly appearing on ‘Summer Will Come’). Alex’s recollection might differ, but my own memory is that’s it’s largely my own fault that we didn’t pursue a second Overland album. Looking back now, over twenty years later, it’s apparent to me that I probably suffered significant issues with anxiety as a teenager, especially where musical creativity was concerned. ‘Traces of Yesterdays’ received a mixed response at the time, and I was particularly sensitive to such criticism in those days. But I’m pleased (and frankly surprised) that ‘Traces of Yesterdays’ is getting this attention now. I have really fond memories of recording it with Alex, Joe, and Jane. Joe and I are still in touch. I lost contact with Alex and Jane a long time ago, though know that Alex has since become a novelist. For my part, I’m nowadays Associate Professor in Memory Studies at the University of Exeter. I continue to play piano and guitar - all this attention on Overland is making me think I should really make the effort to record more.

@@dante_dagger Ok, slight misconception here I can clear up. This wasn't Overland, but it shared some members, me and Alex. There were 3 others in this band, Tom, Mike, and Tom's little sister whose name I can't remember, she's on vocals. We never fully decided on a name before the band collapsed, but we recorded these two songs on a 4 track in the drummer's basement. Alex was the creative force behind this band and Overland. Drew, who uploaded these tracks is my friend Andrew, who got "very special thanks" on the album sleeve, as he was the one enrolled in Dartington College, so he essentially got us free studio time and recorded most of the album for us. I have long since lost touch with Alex, the last I heard he'd released a book, it's called The Currency of Paper, and he released it under the name of Alex Kovacs (not his actual surname, I think he got that one from the film Vanishing Point). As for clean copies of the Overland album, all the copies I've been able to locate have fallen victim to the same disc rot. I have asked around to see if anyone had the foresight to rip the album to mp3, but no luck so far. There was an earlier iteration of Overland that I was not involved in. Dave and Alex were in the band, and some others I don't know. I believe there may be a cassette demo of some of the songs that ended up on Traces of Yesterdays (I always thought that album title was a bit silly, but it was Alex's thing, I'm just the bass player!). I have spoken to Dave, he's gonna try to locate the cassette to see if it's still playable. We sold a few copies of the album at ATP 2001, Alex made a bunch of sampler cassettes with a couple of tracks and a note inside saying our room number and a time to come and buy a cd. He put the cassettes on a merch stall as freebies and a handful of people came and bought the cd. If I'm able to get hold of any clean copies, or if Dave is able to rip the old demos, I'll let you know. Thanks for making this video, it's wild to me that this album is the stuff of internet lore. Alex would get a massive kick out of it too, I'm sure.

@@dante_dagger so I'm the Andrew credited in the liner notes, and I was the Darlington student. My friend Joe was bassist in this band and they were keen to record their album so I invited them down for two days and we recorded onto Protools. I think this was the second thing I ever recorded and I did not know what I was doing. The liner notes also say thanks to all at Hendra which was my student house, so I guess the band crashed on the floor, although I don't really remember that. The songwriter and mastermind was Alex who was 19 at the time, but I don't know anyone still in touch with him. I still have the CD somewhere, but it has suffered the same degradation as everyone else's copy, although I did used to listen to it a lot because I thought the songwriting was brilliant.

Hello. I'm Joe, I played bass on this album. Alex played guitar and sang, Dave played piano and possibly glockenspiel (it's been a while, I can't remember), Jane played violin and sang. I'm kinda amazed that any information about this cd exists any more. We recorded in Dartington over a weekend, a friend of mine was enrolled there and was doing a music degree, so he got us in there (I don't think he was supposed to, but it's been over 20 years, so he probably won't get in trouble now...), we got 7 of the songs recorded there and 3 were done in a basement in Bristol.

@@Profoundemonium I don't really know about the label, I have a feeling our friend Aaron might have been involved in some way, I think he was involved in Stitch Stitch as well, but my involvement in that side of things was very limited. I used my dad's pc to burn probably 50 of the 250 CDRs that made up the run of discs for the album. August Underground (I haven't seen the sequels yet!) was one of those movies I had to take several tries to actually finish, because it was so effective. Peter reminded me of shitty guys from my town when I was growing up in that time period to the point that it was uncomfortable, and there is a bleak aimlessness I love. I was recently revisiting the series and Toe Tag Inc in general (I met a girl at a black metal show in 2008 that had just moved from Philly and said she knew the Toe Tag crew and I'm still regretting not keeping her number) and I am so glad to see this video and sad to see Toe Tag seems to have mostly evaporated at this point. (Please someone tell me otherwise, and I'll be happy my Google-fu was unsuccessful!)

It’s so interesting you should say that it reminded you of guys from your town. I was raised in a suburb of VA in the 2000’s and everything about the first film felt so *familiar*. Like Peter seemed like someone my older sister would have gone to school with, the locations looked similar to where I grew up, it just brought me back to my hometown. I think that was another facet that made the movie all the more effective for me.

This randomly popped up in my feed and wow! Great review! I began seeking out the most disturbing cinema I could find in my early 20s (2008 ish?) and this trilogy made the list. I have a very cool mom and received all the dvds as Christmas gifts, along with Salo and a few other gems 😂 While it feels strange to say I enjoyed the films, I certainly appreciated what they were trying to do. Real-life perpetrators of the kind of acts portrayed throughout this series are vile, and it was refreshing to see films that portrayed them as such, instead of the super-brilliant Hannibal Lecter types or sexy and something in which to aspire. Side note, the old Toe Tag message boards were awesome and I really miss it. There were some very cool people on there who could always recommend something new for a fellow gorehound. I’m rambling, but I look forward to checking out more of your videos. Cheers!
